The Nowhere Inn: "From real-life friends Annie Clark (a.k.a. Grammy award-winning recording and touring artist St. Vincent) and Carrie Brownstein comes the metafictional account of two creative forces banding together to make a documentary about St. Vincent’s music, touring life, and on-stage persona. But they quickly discover unpredictable forces lurking within the subject and filmmaker that threaten to derail the friendship, the project, and the duo’s creative lives. From first-time filmmaker Bill Benz comes a densely woven, laugh-out-loud funny and increasingly fractured commentary on reality, identity, and authenticity. A story of two close friends who attempt to wrestle the truth out of a complex subject before the hall of mirrors that is their artistic lives devours them completely."

Scarehouse Celebrates 20 Years of Fears: "There’s no need to fear … actually, come to think of it, there is – because the legendary haunted attraction ScareHouse, named one of the scariest haunted houses in the United States, will open its doors of doom for its 20th spine-tingling year on Saturday, Sept. 18.
The first visitors to ScareHouse screamed their way through its horrifying haunts and sinister sights and sounds in 1999 – but it’s this year that the attraction is commemorating 20 Years of Fears as a result of a scaled-down, pandemic-influenced version last season.
Tickets to ScareHouse are available beginning today at www.ScareHouse.com. ScareHouse will be open Fridays and Saturdays through Oct. 1; and Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through Nov. 6. General admission tickets – which require advance online reservations – begin at $22.95, with a special “Rip Ticket” that offers no-reservation front-of-line access available beginning at $39.95.

"What do you want?" "I need you to make a choice." Shudder has unveiled the official trailer for a horror thriller titled Shook, yet another new social media horror story. When Mia, a social media star, becomes the target of an online terror campaign, she has to solve a series of games to prevent people she cares about from getting murdered. But is it real. Or is it just a game at her expense. Who knows?! Who even cares?! Yet another derivative, cliche version of this horror. Written and directed by Jennifer Harrington, the film stars Daisye Tutor as Mia, with Emily Goss, Nicola Posener, Octavius J. Johnson, Stephanie Simbari, Grant Rosenmeyer, and real-life make-up and social media influencer Genelle Seldon. Featuring some new music by electronic artist and Italians Do It Better label owner Johnny Jewel. This doesn't look so good. Ah the corrupt cop narrative. A sub-genre with an impressive success rate, so often featuring a flawed antihero in the lead role, as we watch on as those employed to protect us, instead seek to destroy. This paves the way for Baran bo Odar’s unrelenting thriller Sleepless to thrive – and yet here’s a slice of contemporary cinema that adheres too stringently to the tropes of the genre at hand. Fast paced, certainly, but not actually going in any palpable direction.
Jamie Foxx plays the aforementioned cop Vincent Downs, patrolling the streets of Las Vegas, both preventing and committing crimes alongside his partner Sean (T.I.). The pair become unwittingly embroiled in the dark criminal underbelly of the Nevada city, after they steal some drugs – inadvertently doing so from a feared, notorious crime family, resulting in the unhinged Rob Novak (Scoot McNairy) getting mercilessly involved, as well as the affluent,...

Someday, when you least expect it, you’ll hear someone singing the praises of Sleepless. Not now, but once it inevitably enters syndication rotations on TBS or Fxx. That’s where this dad-thriller is destined to find glory – playing in the background during chores or between naps. In a theater, Baran bo Odar’s darkened kidnapping thriller charges forward like a billion other Taken wannabes before it. But without investment or attentive demand? You can come in-and-out of this Sleepless Night remake without being weighed down by the heavy generics that plod with sluggish commitment. That’s not meant to be a backhanded compliment, just a realistic assessment and expectation-setter.
Jamie Foxx stars as Vincent Downs, a dirty Vegas cop who gets tangled-up with the wrong underworld bosses. His partner, Sean Cass (T.I.), hears of a 25 kilo drug shipment coming in, so the two pull an off-hours smash-and-grab heist. Unfortunately,...

The listless, shoddy sort of remake where it feels like all of the characters have already seen the movie they’re in, “Sleepless” reduces one of the best action films of the 21st century into one of the most benign. Released in 2011, Frederic Jardin’s severely under-seen “Sleepless Night” is a French-language brawler with universal appeal — bruising, relentless, and blissfully frenetic, it remains a masterclass in how to layer cinematic mayhem so that every new punch lands where the last one left off.
Needless to say, a lot has been lost in translation. Directed by Baran bo Odar (“The Silence”) and designed to swindle money from starry-eyed January theatergoers who’ve been shut out of “Hidden Figures” or “La La Land” but might as well see something because they’ve already trekked to the multiplex and paid the babysitter for the night, this lifeless photocopy proves that American exceptionalism is...

In 2014, actor Jamie Foxx appeared in five separate films: “Rio 2,” “”The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” “A Million Ways to Die in the West,” “Horrible Bosses 2,” and “Annie.” Fox has not appeared in a film since but has instead released his fifth R&B album “Hollywood: A Story of Dozen Roses,” and provided the voice of Jackie Robinson in the Ken Burns’ documentary on the baseball legend released earlier this year. But soon, Foxx will return to the big screen in “Sleepless,” an action thriller about a police detective forced to recover his son after he’s been violently kidnapped. Every series it seems has a character that was never meant to factor prominently in the series, yet it just happens. Before you know it they're a cast regular because that actor makes magic from what could have been a limited shot on the show. Dean Norris did it with "Breaking Bad's" Hank Schrader, Michael Marisi Ornstein did it with Chucky on "Sons of Anarchy." Octavius J. Johnson is now doing it on Showtime's hit series "Ray Donovan." Ray Donovan, Season 1, Episode 7: “New Birthday”
Written by: David Hollander
Directed by: Lesli Linka Glatter
Airs Sundays at 10 Pm (Et) on Showtime
It may have taken seven episodes to get us there, but Ray Donovan finally convinced its lead character to do something interesting. Watching Ray put himself repeatedly in harm’s way (to the absolute bafflement of those he’s trying to get through) almost approaches the level of charming. Especially with the overall, off-kilter weirdness of Sully’s Boston surroundings. Amazingly, Ray Donovan balances the surreal elements just right- having a heart-to-heart with a racist old crone in a salon or chasing a poodle through an abandoned graveyard, Ray’s story actually stands out as the highlight of “New Birthday.” Here, he’s actually a human being: stubbornly determined and willing to put himself through immense physical pain because he’s thought every step through and knows...

The fest, which takes place every spring in Austin, Texas, began in 1987, and has continued to grow in size every year. The fest announced the first wave of films back in early January, and the lineup included some highly anticipated films such as The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, Evil Dead, Downloaded and Spring Breakers. Now the full lineup has been announced, and it just might be one of the best lineups the festival has ever programmed.
SXSW takes place March 8-16 in Austin Texas. Here are just some of the films we are excited about.
