Disney+ has unveiled a proper first look of German-Spanish actor Daniel Brühl as the titular iconic designer in the new show Becoming Karl Lagerfeld, produced by leading French film and TV company Gaumont.

Rush, Good Bye, Lenin! and Captain America: Civil War actor Brühl is shown sporting Lagerfeld’s trademark ponytail and black tailored suit of his later years.

Disney+ has also released a first subtitled trailer for the show.

The new images – which follow a silhouetted image teased by Disney+ in January – were released in unison with the announcement that the show will premiere at the Canneseries TV festival in April.

Gaumont produced the drama with Jour Premier for Disney+, which will launch the six-part bio-series on June 7. The series will be available in the U.S. on Hulu from that same date.

Disney+ has unveiled the first look of Daniel Brühl as Karl Lagerfeld in ‘Kaiser Karl’ (working title), the new French Original series which chronicles the rise of Lagerfeld through the world of 1970s Parisian high fashion.

The year is 1972. Lagerfeld, aged thirty-eight, is a little-known fashion designer. After meeting and falling in love with Jacques de Bascher, he finds himself in competition with Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé, the head of the most prestigious fashion brand around. And so, begins the story of ‘Kaiser Karl’, a mix of romance, ambition, and a tireless quest for recognition.

The series was created and adapted for television by Isaure Pisani-Ferry, Jennifer Have and Raphaëlle Bacqué, author of the eponymous biography, published by Albin Michel in 2019 and translated into six languages. The Original series is directed by Jérôme Salle and Audrey Estrougo.

Start fitting Daniel Brühl for a pair of big black sunglasses and a ponytail. The German star has signed on to play the late fashion designer, and style icon, Karl Lagerfeld in the new Disney+ series, Kaiser Karl, Disney announced Thursday.

Brühl, most recently seen in Edward Berger’s nine-time Oscar nominated All Quiet on the Western Front for Netflix, will play the young Lagerfeld in the series, which tracks his rise in the French fashion world in the early 1970s.

Arnaud Valois (Bpm (Beats per Minute)) and Alex Lutz (Vortex) will play Lagerfeld’s fashion rivals Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé, with Quebec actor Théodore Pellerin (Never Rarely Sometimes Always) playing Largerfeld’s love interest Jacques de Bascher. Disney+ has ordered “Tout va bien,” a new French original series which will be co-directed and co-produced by ‘The Bureau’ creator and showrunner Eric Rochant. The anticipated series will also be directed by Xavier Legrand (“Custody”), Cathy Verney (“Vernon Subutex”) and Audrey Estrougo (“Supremes”).

Slated to start shooting in Paris soon, “Tout va bien” is created by Camille de Castelnau, a rising talent whose screenwriting credits include episodes of “The Bureau,” “Call My Agent” and “Standing Up.”

“Tout va bien” will be headlined by Virginie Efira (pictured) who stars in Rebecca Zlotowski’s upcoming Venice competition title “Les enfants des autres,” and Nicole Garcia (“Lupin”), among others.

The series, which will launch on Disney+ around the world in 2023, revolves around an dysfunctional Parisian family confronted to the tragic illness of one their children.

The North American Premiere of Emmanuel Carrère’s Cannes Directors’ Fortnight opener Between Two Worlds starring Juliette Binoche will open the in-person 25th Colcoa French film and series festival on November 1.

The event runs until November 7 and will screen 55 films and series at the DGA Theatre in Hollywood with a Colcoa Classics tribute to Bertrand Tavernier.

The closing films are Xavier Giannoli’s recent Venice Film Festival Lost Illusions and Arthur Harari’s 2021 Cannes Un Certain Regard opener Onoda, 10,000 Nights In The Jungle.

Emmanuel Carrère’s Ouistreham (Between Two Worlds) has been set as the opening film of the 25th Colcoa French Film and Series Festival. The anniversary edition of the City of Lights, City of Angels fest kicks off on November 1 with the Juliette Binoche-starrer that opened Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes last July before winning the Audience Award at San Sebastian. Cohen Media Group releases in the U.S. in 2022.

Colcoa is running as a live week-long event taking place at the DGA Theater Complex from November 1-7. This year’s edition is dedicated to late filmmaker Bertrand Tavernier and will pay homage to him in the Classics section. The full program will include 55 films and series, as well as 19 shorts. Thirty of the films will compete for the Colcoa Cinema Awards and the Colcoa High School Screenings program will also return, welcoming 3,000 high school students from across Southern California.

Following up his love-it-or-hate-it Climax, director Gaspar Noé secretly shot a new film this past spring and it’s among the additions to the Cannes Film Festival lineup, which also includes new work by Ari Folman, a Bill Murray concert film, Noémie Merlant’s directorial debut, and more.

As for the Enter the Void director’s latest, he shot Vortex over twenty days between mid-March and April 2021, with a cast including Dario Argento, Françoise Lebrun, and Alex Lutz, as well as a budget of 3.3 million euros, more than his last two features. The Cannes Film Festival has completed the extensive film lineup of its Official Selection, including the animated feature “Where Is Anne Frank?” directed by Oscar-nominated Ari Folman (“Waltz with Bashir”).

The festival has also added “Vortex” by Gaspar Noe to the Cannes Premiere section and “Mes Freres Et Moi” by Yohan Manca to Un Certain Regard.

Additional midnight screenings include “Tralala” by Arnaud and Jean-Marie Larrieu and “Supremes” by Audrey Estrougo.

The Santa Barbara Film Festival will open with the world premiere of Aaron Maurer’s documentary Invisible Valley, which profiles the stories of the disparate people that make up the Coachella Valley. It kicks off a festival that will run March 31-April 10 with a hybrid edition that includes online elements and screenings at a pair of pop-up beachside drive-in venues.

The full lineup revealed Tuesday features 47 world premieres and 37 U.S. premieres from 45 countries alongside the fest’s annual tributes featuring the likes of Bill Murray, Carey Mulligan, Sacha Baron Cohen and Amanda Seyfried which will be livestreamed online.

Every film screening will be offered for free this year, with a ticketed online component that will showcase the entire film lineup along with the tributes, industry panels and filmmaker Q&As.

The fest will close with a series of short documentaries by local filmmakers.

Elle Driver has picked up Indian director Gurvinder Singh’s tense Punjab-set drama Fourth Direction (Chauthi Koot) ahead of its premiere in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard.

Set in the Indian state of the Punjab at the height of the separatist Sikh uprising in the early 1980s, the film captures the atmosphere of fear and paranoia of the period and the impact of the violence on ordinary people.

Singh intertwines two loosely connect incidents, an attempt by two Hindu friends to get to the city of Amritsar, home to one of the holiest shrines in the Sikh religion, and a farmer who is told to put-down his barking dog.

It is a second feature for Singh after his debut picture Alms for a Blind Horse, which premiered in Venice in 2011.

Paris-based sales company Elle Driver has taken on world sales of Palestinian filmmakers Tarzan and Arab’s black comedy Dégradé capturing life on the Gaza Strip.

The film joins a strong Efm slate, which also includes Golden Bear contenders Nobody Wants the Night and Diary of a Chambermaid as well as Emmanuelle Bercot’s Standing Tall.

Twin brothers Tarzan and Arab’s short film Condom Lead, revolving around the complications of making love in a conflict zone, premiered at Cannes in 2013.

Their debut feature is set against the backdrop of the real-life liberation of a stolen lioness from the compound of the Hassanein family, one of Gaza’s most powerful clans.

“We’ll be showing first images of the film which is based on true events in Gaza in 2007,” said Elle Driver co-chief Adeline Fontan Tessaur, ahead of the European Film Market (Feb 5-13).

Titled Regarde Moi (Watch Me), and directed by Audrey Estrougo, the film chronicles a day in the life of several teenagers in a Parisian housing project known as “la Cité.”

Until women reach a 50-50 parity with men directors, my mission continues to count the women directors in upcoming and recent film festivals (and an occasional informal glance at what’s selling in the markets). Women’s films in Berlin reflect women’s place in the world both in content and in the numbers of women represented as directors, producers, writers, etc. John Cooper of Sundance stresses the increasing and possibly 50-50 parity of women producers, but I am looking at the directors. As March is Women’s History Month (and all the other months are Men’s History Month according to Gloria Steinem’s L.A. Times Article of March 4, 2010) this blog is in honor of all women everywhere.

PARIS -- French cinema will be in the spotlight on the East coast at Unifrance's 13th annual Rendez-Vous with French Cinema in New York Feb 29 - March 9, organizers said Monday.

The event, coordinated in collaboration with The Film Society of Lincoln Center, will host U.S. premieres of 15 Gallic titles at the Walter Reade Theater and the IFC Center.

Titles include: Anne Le Ny's "Those Who Remain", Christophe Honore's "Love Songs", Sophie Marceau's "La Disparue de Deauville", Sandrine Bonnaire's "Her Name is Sabine", Jean-Marc Moutout's "The Feelings Factory", Noemie Lvovsky's "Let's Dance!," Eric Guirado's "The Grocer's Son", Charles Burns and Richard McGuire's "Fear(s) of the Dark," Cedric Klapisch's "Paris", Nicolas Klotz' "Heartbeat Detector", Audrey Estrougo's "Aint Scared", Mia Hansen-Love's "All is Forgiven", Emmanuel Mouret's "A Kiss, Please", Claude Miller's "A Secret" and Claude Lelouch's "Crossed Tracks".

"The festival will be the occasion for these films to increase their visibility among U.S. professionals and to find an eventual distributor," Unifrance said in a statement.
