When the dust finally settles on the fantasy phenomenon known as "Game of Thrones" and fans are able to look back without being clouded by emotion (along the lines of what's been happening recently with the 20th anniversary of "Lost" and its ongoing reappraisal), time may prove to be quite kind to the groundbreaking HBO series -- controversies and all. Some of those controversies have become an inextricable part of how we discuss and analyze the epic undertaking, like its iffy approach to depictions of sexual violence or the various ways the adaptation strayed from author George R.R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" series. Others fall into a different and more nuanced category entirely, one that's worth dissecting even all these years later. In that light, a particularly odd scene from over a decade ago might be worth a second look.

The world of Arthurian lore is packed with great adventures, high drama. love, lust, betrayal, battles and conniving magic users. Camelot was born from pagan myths turned into chivalric romance, and its archetypes run deep and ancient. It is no surprise that filmmakers have long interested in the story of King Arthur, with varying results. The following list of 16 Arthurian-themed film and TV projects ranks the best of those ambitious cinematic efforts.
16) First Knight (1995)
Columbia Pictures rolled out First Knight in the summer of 1995. A Jerry Zucker-directed Arthurian chivalric romance starring Sean Connery, Richard Gere, Julia Ormond and Ben Cross, First Knight is unique among Arthurian projects for its rejection of the story's magical aspects. First Knight looks to the early works of French poet Chretien de Troyes, who wrote about Arthur in the 12th century, for inspiration.

Elon Musk is regularly the richest man in the world thanks to being at the head of companies like Tesla, SpaceX and Neuralink. He also famously bought Twitter in 2022, renaming the platform X and changing it up so much that advertisers fled and use went down by a fifth. Musk tweets regularly, sometimes about stuff you'd expect, and often about some pretty weird stuff; just the other week he pointed out to his nearly 200 million followers that "No one is even trying to assassinate" President Joe Biden or Vice President Kamala Harris, a tweet that brought a rebuke from the White House.

Peaky Blinders, despite its kind of cutesy name, is a pretty brutal crime drama about English gangs in the wake of World War I. It turned creator Steven Knight (who before this was one of the co-creators behind Who Wants To Be A Millionaire) into a celebrated screenwriter; he's now one of the many writers with a Star Wars movie in development, along with an upcoming Peaky Blinders movie set during World War II.
Among Peaky Blinders' many cast members was Aidan Gillen, whom Game of Thrones fans will remember as Petyr "Littlefinger" Baelish, the scheming master of coin. Gillen played ruthless hitman Aberama Gold starting in the fourth season, which aired in 2017. Speaking recently at the Royal Television Society conference in London, Knight confessed that before hiring Gillen, he thought Game of Thrones was a show intended for children; his young son was obsessed with it, after all, and...

Steven Knight has described the cast for his TV film of smash Netflix hit Peaky Blinders, starring Cillian Murphy as Birmingham gangster boss Tommy Shelby, as “mindblowing.”
The film follows a six-season series met with critical acclaim after dropping on the streaming platform, with Oscar winner Murphy, Paul Anderson, Helen McCrory, Tom Hardy, and Joe Cole leading the cast. So far confirmed for the movie, set to start filming soon, are Saltburn‘s Barry Keoghan and Dune‘s Rebecca Ferguson.
“We’ve announced Rebecca Ferguson, we’ve announced Barry Keoghan, we’ve got some more announcements coming,” Knight, who also revealed he originally wanted to write Peaky Blinders as a novel, told BBC Culture Editor Katie Razzall at The Royal Television Society’s London Convention. He was tight-lipped about the upcoming project, but told the audience: “It’s set in the second world war and it’s really good.”

Writer Steven Knight has revealed he thought “Game of Thrones” was a kids show until he cast one of its actors in his own series.
Knight, who’s perhaps best known for creating Cillian Murphy-starrer “Peaky Blinders,” was speaking at the Royal Television Society conference in London, in conversation with BBC journalist Katie Razzall when he made the admission.
He recalled how his young son was obsessed with “Game of Thrones,” asking for a DVD boxset for Christmas, which Knight was happy to provide having seen it featured dragons. It was only when he came to cast “Game of Thrones” alum Aidan Gillen in “Peaky Blinders” he realized the George R. R. Martin-created series had more adult themes.
When someone suggested Gillen for “Peaky,” they told Knight that he plays the brothel keeper in “Game of Thrones.” Knight responded in shock: “What are you talking about? It’s a kid’s show!

A new show hits the air, and you’re hooked, counting down the days until the next season. Then, out of nowhere — Boom! — you find out your favorite show is canceled.
Before the age of streaming, plenty of beloved shows barely made it past one season. The usual culprit? “Low ratings.”
(Fox / Screenshot)
But often, networks were to blame. Maybe they stuck a great show in a terrible time slot or scheduled it against a ratings juggernaut on another network.
Sometimes, the show was too edgy or dark for network bigwigs or too complex for mainstream audiences to embrace right away.
In rare cases, fan campaigns brought a canceled show back for another season, but more often, it was game over.
If streaming had been as big back then as it is now, these shows — and their loyal fans — might have gotten the long run they deserved.

[This story contains spoilers from the Mayor of Kingstown season three finale.]
When plotting what comes next, sometimes you have to close an entire storyline. Even if it was one that seved the series well.
That’s what Mayor of Kingstown’s co-creator Hugh Dillon, along with co-creator Taylor Sheridan, did in the recent finale of season three’s Paramount+ series about peacemaker/fixer Mike McLusky (Jeremy Renner) running a fictional prison-industry town.
For three seasons, McLusky’s toughest nemesis was the Russian mafia, who infiltrated the fictional Michigan border town with drugs, guns and sex trafficking. He had to battle two of the Russians’ most ruthless and violent bosses — Milo Sunter (Aidan Gillen) and Konstantin Noskov (Yorick van Wageningen) — and protect a sex-trafficked young woman known as Iris (Emma Laird), referred to by the brutal Russian gang as a broken angel.

When The Mandalorian premiered on Disney+ in 2019, most viewers quickly became enamored with the Yodi-like Grogu. Every fall, Americans are hit with political ads and social media posts asking for donations to a public servant’s upcoming campaign. Election season bogs down the news cycle like a rain cloud, each candidate sounding like a broken record with the same old song coming from the speakers. If the fate of women’s rights, LGBTQ+ acceptance, and fair wages for labor weren’t perpetually at risk, elections might even be entertaining instead of stressful!
That’s where our favorite TV shows come in! Sitcoms, dramas, and even children’s shows have never shied away from writing entire episodes or even series-long arcs related to politics. These are the best TV show elections of all time!
Singer/Neuman 2024 (The Boys)
The Boys incorporates political satire into the bloody action in almost every episode. Creator Eric Kripke and his writers never shy away from poking fun at politicians, viewpoints, and the thirst for power.

House of the Dragon, set around 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones has retained some similar character qualities from the 2011 show. Most notably, characters like Rhaenyra Targaryen and Larys Strong are very similar to characters from Game of Thrones and it shows.

The acclaimed director James Marsh takes on the challenging task of bringing Samuel Beckett’s complex life to the screen in Dance First. Written by Neil Forsyth, the film stars Gabriel Byrne as the older Beckett, with Fionn O’Shea playing him in his younger days. It skips through key periods, relationships, and events in a largely linear chronology.
The story opens in 1969 at the Nobel Prize ceremony, from which Beckett hastily escapes. This prompts conversations with another Beckett where he reflects on those who caused him “shame”—his m mother, James Joyce’s daughter Lucia, and the two women in his life.
Through flashbacks we see Beckett’s difficult upbringing in Ireland, his arrival in Paris and work with Joyce, his involvement in the French Resistance, and his long relationships with his eventual wife Suzanne and translator Barbara Bray.
While providing glimpses into Beckett’s experiences, the film only touches on his groundbreaking works.

Director James Marsh has had great success telling the stories of extraordinary people. He won an Oscar for his documentary Man on Wire, about tightrope walker Philippe Petit, and his Stephen Hawking biopic, The Theory of Everything, which won several awards, including Oscars. So Dance First — a biography about the iconic author and playwright Samuel Beckett (Waiting for Godot), directed by Marsh and starring Garbiel Byrne (Hereditary) and Aidan Gillen (Game of Thrones) — should be a slam dunk. Unfortunately, despite its attempts to break convention, Dance First feels far too safe to make much of an impact.

House of the Dragon finally redeemed Game of Thrones for its terrible ending and it seems that the fans of the high fantasy series are getting back up on the Got train. Based on George R.R. House of the Dragon stars Matt Smith as Daemon Targaryen, Rhys Ifans as Otta Hightower, Steve Toussaint as Corlys Velaryon, Eve Best as Rhaenys Velaryon, Sonoya Mizuno as Mysaria, and Fabien Frankel as Criston Cole. Spoiler Alert: The following interview contains spoilers from “Comeuppance,” the Season 3 finale of “Mayor of Kingstown,” now streaming on Paramount+.
Wrapping up its season quietly in a tidy fashion is just not the “Mayor of Kingstown” way, which it proved once more on Sunday with the conclusion of its gripping third season. As is par for the course with the dark world of the fictional Michigan city, there was a lot of bloodshed and death as well as characters questioning their respective futures. Not too shabby for a show that found itself in a very real, fragile position last year when star Jeremy Renner, who plays beleaguered Mike McLusky, was injured in a snowplow accident that left him with blunt chest trauma and 38 broken bones.
But, like the heroes he’s known for playing in much of his career, Renner was determined to recover and get back to his “Mayor of Kingstown” character,...

“The sun shone, having no alternative, on the nothing new.” So goes the famous opening line to Samuel Beckett’s 1938 avant-garde novel Murphy. There’s nothing much new to be found in director James Marsh’s film about the legendary Irish writer either, which takes a fairly rote cradle-to-grave approach to the Nobel laureate’s life. The great shame is that there were alternatives here and, in its best moments, Dance First hints at them, flirting with a more adventurous approach that, well, might have yielded something new.

The Season 3 finale of Mayor of Kingstown is almost upon us, and it’s sure to be a true doozy. The logline for the new episode, titled “Comeuppance,” promises, “Mike’s plan for the warring factions in Kingstown hits turbulence.” That maybe some fast and loose use of the word “plan,” though, because Mike McLusky (Jeremy Renner) seems to be in way over his head with all of the disparate issues at hand in Kingstown right about now… especially now that Milo (Aiden Gillen) is back in town. Still, even with all of the drama encircling him with Bunny (Tobi Bamtefa) and Callahan (Richard Brake) and Konstantin (Yorick van Wageningen) and, now Milo, he’s still, at heart, a family man. Magnolia has revealed an official trailer for the film titled Dance First, an intriguing biopic about the life of literary genius Samuel Beckett. This premiered at the 2023 San Sebastian FIlm Festival last year, before then opening in the UK in November; Beckett was Irish so the UK got first dibs on this release. The film documents the Irish writer's life, from his childhood, his friendship with James Joyce until the incarceration of the latter's mentally ill daughter Lucia Joyce, his relationship with his future wife Suzanne Dumesnil, also as a fighter for the French Resistance during WWII, his postwar literary rise and subsequent Nobel Prize for Literature in 1969, his affair with translator Barbara Bray and his later life until his death in 1989. Throughout the film, Beckett carries out an interior monologue. Irish actor Gabriel Byrne stars as Beckett, joined by Fionn O'Shea,...

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for the latest episode of Mayor of Kingstown, “Iris.’] Iris (Emma Laird) put herself at the center of the action on Sunday’s eponymous new episode of Mayor of Kingstown. Though Mike McLusky (Jeremy Renner) heavily disfavored her plan, Iris insisted on making nice with her former acquaintance, who had nothing but nice things to say about her in return, and by the end of the episode, she’d fully gained Konstantin’s trust… at least, by her estimation. This piece first appeared in the February 2021 issue of Empire.
Russell T Davies is exhausted. The story he's had on his mind for decades is finally arriving on television, in the form of visceral, angry, funny, transgressive five-part drama It’s A Sin, and he's still coming to terms with it. When Empire meets Davies, 57, in a London hotel bar, he's still processing it. "I think I'm stunned that, having wanted to write this for about 30 years, we've actually made it." he explains. "And now I'm a little bit bereft."
Once he gets going though, digging deep into the show's long difficult glorious birth, he doesn't seem bereft at all. He's burning with excitement and pride, in fact, palpably thrilled that he's managed to tell the stories of his friends from the 1980s and the virus that cut a swathe through their lives.
