When "10 Things I Hate About You" was released in 1999, it featured a cast of swoon-worthy young stars. Directed by Stephen Herek, the film brings Old Hollywood sensibilities to a modern Christmas story, complete with Lohan’s sharp charismatic screen presence and a story about reconciling with the past. The story follows Avery (played by Lohan), a sharp and successful business consultant, as she prepares for her first encounter with the wealthy and eccentric family of her boyfriend, Cam (Jon Rudnitsky), during a four-day Thanksgiving weekend. However, things take a turn when she discovers that Cam’s sister Cassie (Katie Baker) is also bringing home her boyfriend, Logan (Ian Harding)—Avery’s childhood best friend and ex-boyfriend, with whom she had a messy breakup a decade ago.

At this point, every TV channel and streaming network has gotten in on the Christmas movie craze, collectively realizing that by the time Thanksgiving rolls around, audiences are eager to turn off their brains and indulge in a little hot cocoa and PG-rated romance. But although Netflix is on the case now, spending the holiday season offering us time-traveling knights and an endless array of royalty looking for love in its connected holiday cinematic universe, Hallmark is still the undefeated champ when it comes to the made-for-tv Christmas movie. The network has it down to a science, overhauling its entire schedule between October and December to accommodate the dozens of cheesy romances it churns out each year. 

But not all of these Christmas flicks are created equal: There are some real stinkers amongst the bunch, as well as a few sparkling gems that somehow seem to defy the limitations of their genre.

Hallmark Channel announces the return of its popular Christmas in July programming event, now in its 12th year. This event features holiday movies all month long for a sum total of over 500 hours of programming!

Viewers will be gifted two original movie premieres, Falling Like Snowflakes, starring Rebecca Dalton and Marcus Rosner, premiering Saturday, June 29 at 8/7c, and A Very Vermont Christmas, starring Katie Leclerc and Ryan McPartlin, premiering Saturday, July 20 at 8/7c.

Vietnam — where Netflix’s new romantic comedy A Tourist’s Guide to Love, starring Rachel Leigh Cook, Scott Ly and Ben Feldman, was filmed — is reigniting interest in traveling to the country, long a beloved destination of foodies and nature lovers.

Feldman — who recently shared his Vietnam travel diary with THR — visited Hoi An in central Vietnam and savored his stay at Four Seasons Resort The Nam Hai, Hoi An (from $855 a night). “Hoi An is just the most charming city on planet Earth. It has this Venetian-style canal going through it, and at night, when the sun goes down, they light all these beautiful lanterns and make wishes on them and set them off into the water. I would go back to Hoi An in a second,” says Feldman.

I went to Vietnam in spring 2022 to film A Tourist’s Guide to Love while the country was still closed to Westerners [because of the pandemic], so it was really special. It felt like we were kind of sneaking in. I love Rachael Leigh Cook, and this is a passion project for her. She was producing and starring in it, and she reached out asking if I’d be willing to come to Vietnam for a little bit. I didn’t ask any other questions.

The movie itself is very much a love letter to Vietnam. People there were very excited it was opening back up and there was a movie shooting there. Our crew — by and large Vietnamese and a really, really great group of people — hadn’t worked in two years. Everybody tells you before you go to Vietnam that they’re just the nicest, greatest people, but it’s still surprising to see how true that is.

“The Diplomat” made it into the Top 10 in 86 countries last week, including over 15 territories in first place, but the #1 series in the United States and Canada was still the fourth season of reality series “Love is Blind,” which had 39.5 million hours viewed around the season finale reunion special. The Ali Wong–Steven Yeun dark comedy “Beef” continued to find viewers in third place with 42.8 million hours viewed, as the #1 show in Bulgaria, Latvia, Lithuania, Ukraine and Bahrain.

Disney maintained its lead on all VOD charts, now with a different title. “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” replaced “Avatar: The Way of Water” (both $19.99) as #1 after a four-week run that arrived 100 days after its theatrical debut. “Quantumania” had a 60-day delay after its disappointing $213 million domestic box office. Both films stand apart from the recent norm of home play before 31 days.

No word yet when “John Wick: Chapter 4” (Lionsgate), “Air” (MGM), or most importantly “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” (Universal) will make the leap. “Super Mario Bros.” might be available within two weeks (based on the 31-day window established in 2020 by the just-ousted NBC/Universal CEO Jeff Shell). Any of those films might prevent “Quantumania” from establishing more than a two-week run at #1.

Cook was the leader of the music group Josie McCoy while Pyle played the role of Alexandra Cabot. The two stars recently recalled their time working together in the 2001 comedy film.

“I remember Missi improvising things that made all of us absolutely cry laughing,” Cook told Tudum about her costar. “An especially brilliant moment from her is when my character is having a big revelation about the conspiracy that is afoot, and Missi completely steals the scene by paying attention to nothing I’m saying and silently sneaking up behind me, plucking a hair from my head and inspecting it. I remember watching playback on the monitor absolutely in awe.”
