The Unexpecteds is one of those films you wish they would remake instead of a classic. That’s not to put the film down. Far from it. You see the potential in writer and director Alejandro Montoya Marin’s first feature-length film. The story is timely and engaging, and the script has some well-timed jokes. However, this comedy caper never quite reaches its potential.
The reason is glaring and obvious—the cast’s flat and wooden performances. And that’s a shame because this “Dumb Money Light” could have been something embraced. If only the cast could have found the heart of the matter, at least enough for the audience to embrace the characters from The Unexpecteds and care.

Exclusive: Carrie Coon (The Gilded Age) is set to appear opposite Lauren Lapkus in Another Happy Day, a postpartum depression comedy marking the feature debut of writer-director Nora Fiffer, which wrapped production last summer in Chicago and will make its world premiere at the Vail Film Festival this Saturday, December 9th.
The film centers on Joanna (Lapkus), a “total nut” who is wearing new motherhood so awkwardly that she remarks candidly “I’m not really a mom, I just have a baby, you know?” This new mom is also an artist who isn’t making any art, and feels truly terrible at taking care of her newborn, as she stumbles through her days. She can’t get her old job back, her old friends have moved on without her, her husband thinks he’s a better mother than she is, she’s terribly sleep deprived, and her baby won’t look at her.

This is Day 109 of the WGA strike and Day 36 of the SAG-AFTRA strike.
The WGA and SAG-AFTRA teamed up for its first bicoastal picket in Los Angeles and New York on Friday, and Latino Hollywood showed up in droves.
At Warner Bros. in Los Angeles, more than 2,000 actors, writers and supporters hit the sidewalks as temperatures hit the high-80s. Salsa and Bachata music blasted through the speakers near Gates 2 and 3 as patient strike captains including Vida star Chelsea Rendon, kept everyone moving safely. One captain was overheard saying, “You have to keep moving, but you don’t have to stop dancing!” And so they did.

When Telemundo comes to her mind, the first thing Bianca Quesada thinks about is her grandma’s television set and seeing telenovelas with the same soapy narratives that have been told by the genre for ages. Fast-forward to today, and the “Vida” development alum will be producing unscripted and scripted content for Telemundo that will expand the aperture of the medium, redefining what a telenovela can be.
“We both fundamentally believe that the Latinx experience is not monolithic and that it is not a one-size-fits-all narrative. We want to bridge the nuance and reliability of characters and move from just a Latin or a Hispanic experience to a universal human experience,” Quesada tells Variety. “Hollywood has been a perpetrator of regurgitation of negative stereotypes about our people, and to a degree, there weren’t enough of us to hold the people in storytelling accountable for the types of depictions,” she added.

Every few years, David Ayer reminds us that Michael Bay isn’t the only director blowing stuff up for no reason. Bright, Sabotage and Street Kings are examples of what Bayhem would look like if it were rated R and his latest film, The Tax Collector, is no exception.
The Tax Collector begins in a very expected way for this sort of thing. After breakfast with his wife and kids, David (Bobby Soto) teams up with his partner in crime, Creeper (Shia Labeouf). Their job is to collect payments from dozens of street gangs for a protection racket run by Wizard, who’s seen with his back toward the camera in a prison cell. Before you can wonder just who the heck this guy is, bodies start piling up in Los Angeles, where the head of the Mexican Cartel, Conejo (Jose Conejo Martin), is savagely, furiously and ceaselessly taking over Wizard’s business.

It’s a slasher film centered on a group of college friends who plan a getaway to celebrate a Birthday party at a desolate cabin in the woods. Having won 9 awards and selling out all screenings during its festival run, Murder in the Woods is a horror film for a mainstream audience but the cast and crew are all latinx and they’re not portrayed in stereotypical roles. Here’s the trailer:

"Killer's in the house!" Rezinate Pics has unveiled a trailer for an indie horror film called Murder in the Woods, which is finally releasing this fall after first premiering a few years ago. This "cabin in the woods" horror is about a group of teens who arrive at a mysterious cabin and soon discover the dark secret it holds, which forces them to fight for their lives. Director Luis Iga explains his intentions: "This film showcases the talents of our young diverse cast and I'm proud to say that we have made the first 'All American Slasher' with a full diverse cast in non-stereotypical roles." This stars José Julián, Jeanette Samano, Chelsea Rendon, Catherine Toribio, Kade Wise, Jordan Diambrini, Soledad St. Hilaire, and Rolando Molina, plus Danny Trejo as Sheriff Lorenzo. In my opinion, it looks especially unoriginal and redundant. Here's the first official trailer (+ posters) for Luis Iga's Murder in the Woods,...

Accurate multicultural representation in Hollywood starts crucially with hiring communities of color to make and star in films, “Suicide Squad” and “Bright” director David Ayer said Thursday at the ArcLight drive-in premiere of his new Los Angeles-based crime drama, “The Tax Collector.”
“Hire them. Hire them for jobs,” Ayer said when asked about increasing Latino representation in Hollywood productions. “People take care of people, give them jobs and give them their voice.”
“The Tax Collector” has a mostly Latinx cast, led by Bobby Soto, Cinthya Carmona, George Lopez, Lana Parrilla, Chelsea Rendon and Jose “Conejo” Martin.
Ayer, who has written and directed several South L.A.-set films, including “End of Watch,” “Training Day” and “Harsh Times,” said, “I always grew up around Chicanos. Where is the f—ing Hollywood Chicano superstar?”

The Tax Collector, despite its title, is not a Hallmark channel drama about a lovelorn IRS agent, which the just-released trailer makes abundantly clear. Indeed, the film, an intense crime drama from Suicide Squad director David Ayer, is a Southern California-set tragedy with quite the ace in its hole with a maniacally unhinged performance by Shia Labeouf.
Ayer, best known for the aforementioned Dceu outing, along with Will-Smith-starring (and sequel-set) Netflix feature Bright and Brad Pitt-headlined WWII epic Fury, makes a thematic reprisal of sorts with written/directorial offering The Tax Collector, which returns him to the wheelhouse of his earlier urban-action efforts like Street Kings, End of the Watch and Sabotage. In this case, Ayer depicts the dilemma of a So-Cal man who, for the sake of his family, attempts to escape his gang’s reach; an endeavor that will put him in some serious cross-hairs.

Spoiler Alert: This article contains details about the series finale of Vida on Starz.
“I hope that Vida gives permission and is a marker in this timeline of us,” says Tanya Saracho of the Starz series that came to an end tonight after three seasons. “Us meaning Latinx in this industry,” the seasoned playwright and TV writer added of the East La-based and Lgbtq-focused Vida. “That it’s a marker that allows for this kind of storytelling to happen.”
With the final episode both penned and directed by Saracho, ever battling sisters Emma (Mishel Prada) and Lyn (Melissa Barrera) came right to edge on finally walking away from each other and the bar that they had built up to a success against all odds after their mother’s death. In a journey that has taken many turns both for the show and Starz since Vida debuted just over two years ago,...

People risk all kinds of things to make movies — money, reputations, sometimes even their health. But in “The Infiltrators,” it feels as if the crew we see on-screen is putting their lives on the line for a cause they believe in, and that the movie is just a byproduct, as opposed to the principal mission.
In that way, it’s like “The Cove,” the remarkable dolphin-saving doc in which marine-life activists sneaked into a secluded Japanese killing field like soldiers on a special-ops mission. “The Infiltrators” also documents a courageous undercover operation, this one involving Dreamers who turn themselves over to Border Patrol officers in order to assist their fellow undocumented immigrants from inside a federal detention center — except, in this case, directors Cristina Ibarra and Alex Rivera rely on a mix of talking heads and reenactment footage to dramatize a mission for which principal coverage was limited to a few audio recordings.

Throughout its short-lived three seasons, the half-hour comedic melodrama “Vida” has covered a lot of ground. Opening with a mother’s death bringing together two sisters when they inherit a bar in their gentrifying East L.A. neighborhood, the series charted Mexican-American identity, immigration, gentrification, queerness, and female sexuality, and concludes with the creation of the hottest Poc queer bar in Boyle Heights.
From its humble beginnings as a six-episode lark for Starz, the mere existence of “Vida” was a fairy tale come true. The show is the brain-and-love-child of Tanya Saracho, a queer Chicana playwright from Chicago who has worked extensively with the city’s famed Steppenwolf Theater Company. When “Vida” premiered in 2018, there were very few TV shows headed by a woman showrunner, and even fewer by a woman of color. The joy and enthusiasm evoked by such a milestone carried through the terrific first two seasons, which charmed with sharp storytelling,...

On March 12, after months of intensive work, Tanya Saracho delivered the final cut of “Vida” to Starz. On March 13, she began self-quarantining. “After all that activity, I didn’t know what to do with the silence!” she laughs now, several weeks later. What made that first stretch of social distancing even stranger for Saracho, though, was that it was also the same week that everyone else learned that this third season of “Vida” would also be its last.
“I had already gone through all the stages [of grief], so I was in this numb stage — and then I saw it in black and white and it hit me like a ton of bricks,” says Saracho of watching the announcement ripple throughout the internet. “That day was really strange. Usually on a day like that, I would’ve vented with friends and family. But no, my cats were the ones who got it.

“Vida” is coming to an end with its upcoming third season, Starz announced Wednesday.
The cabler renewed the show for the third season in May 2019 and its April 26 premiere date was announced just last month, in February 2020. But now “final season” has been added as a descriptor.
Creator, showrunner and director Tanya Saracho wrote a letter to say goodbye:

Rather than dwell on the ‘hows’ and the ‘whys,’ what I’m burning to get to is the ‘thank-you’ part. That’s the part that’s making my chest ache.

"No one knows how this will all end." Oscilloscope Labs has debuted the official trailer for an acclaimed indie documentary-feature hybrid titled The Infiltrators, that first premiered at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival. It won the Next Audience Award & Best of Next award, and went on to pick up a few more prizes including the Rogue Award as the Ashland Film Festival. The film is about a rag-tag group of undocumented youth - known as "DREAMers" - that deliberately get detained by the Us Border Patrol in order to infiltrate a shadowy, for-profit detention center. By weaving together documentary footage of the real infiltrators with re-enactments of the events inside the detention center, The Infiltrators tells an incredible and thrilling true story in a genre-defying new cinematic language. Starring Maynor Alvarado, Chelsea Rendon, Manuel Uriza, Juan Gabriel Pareja, and Vik Sahay. Looks like a vitally important and rousing, inspiring film. Here's...

Greater diversity in television is a storytelling good as much as a political one. The medium has made some long-overdue strides in the last few years with inclusive casting and shows that offer fresh perspectives to an ever-wider audience. But while some of these series have been great from the start, like FX’s Pose, others have needed more fine-tuning.

Exclusive: Oscilloscope Laboratories has acquired U.S. rights to the critically acclaimed immigration feature The Infiltrators. Directed by Alex Rivera and Cristina Ibarra, the film made its world premiere earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival where it went on to won the Audience Award: Next and the Next Innovator Prize. Oscilloscope is set to release the feature in theaters before streaming on digital platforms.
The Infiltrators is a very timely docu-thriller that tells the true story of young immigrants who get detained by Border Patrol, and put in a shadowy for-profit detention center — on purpose. Marco (Maynor Alvarado) and Viri (Vida‘s Chelsea Rendon) are members of the National Immigrant Youth Alliance, a group of radical Dreamers who are on a mission to stop deportations. And the best place to stop deportations, they believe, is in detention. However, when they try to pull off a prison break in reverse,...

Ken Kirby is ready to jump into the soapy prime time drama of Dynasty. The Good Trouble actor is set to recur on the CW reboot of the iconic series in the role of Evan Tate, Trixie’s (Jessi Goei) older brother. And as we all know, Trixie is Fallon’s (Elizabeth Gillies) friend who died ten years ago and whose body was pulled from the lake in the season finale.
Kirby’s casting is refreshing in a time when Dynasty has seen a slew of changes in its casting during the first two seasons. The lead role of Cristal went through two changes. The first time Ana Brenda Contreras replaced original star Nathalie Kelley after the end of Season 1. And recently, Contreras was replaced by Daniella Alonso as the series headed into Season 3. In addition, Elizabeth Gillies recently took over the role of Alexis from Nicollette Sheridan. And original...

Last year, the Vida TV show was one of two half-hour dramas to premiere on Starz. Despite being the second lowest-rated TV series on the premium cable network, it wasn't cancelled and is now back for a second season, which was released in full on the Starz app, three days prior to the season two debut. Since it was inspired by the Richard Villegas Jr. short story, Pour Vida, is there still more story left to tell? Will Vida be cancelled or renewed for season three? Stay tuned. *Status update below.

Vida stars Melissa Barrera and Mishel Prada as Mexican-American sisters Lyn and Emma, who move back into their L.A. childhood home after their mother passes away. In Season 2, “Lyn and Emma...
