- AnecdotesPernell Roberts publicly denounced series television when he left Bonanza (1959) for theatre in 1965. He decided to return to television because his salary would help support his aging father. He also felt that he would be able to exercise his acting range and address social issues, two things he felt he was rarely able to do on Bonanza.

Not a bad show, but not a great one, either. It's one of the many old series for which there is no dvd set, and so the memory of it will continue to fade, as is true for so many old TV shows.
The cast all did a decent job. Pernell Roberts was the gruff and wise leader, and Gregory Harrison and Brian Stokes Mitchell were the handsome young doctors. I watched it sometimes during its original run. For me, the drawback to the show was that none of the characters were of compelling interest. Compare this show to Quincy, MD with Jack Klugman. Just watching Klugman in any scene was entertaining, in a way that Pernell Roberts did not achieve, for me. I seem to recall--this is about 40 years later!--that he was often blowing his top with righteous indignation. The show seemed rather too heavy for my taste; not enough light moments. Most old TV shows don't rise to classic status. This one included. Anyway, it's long gone now, and seems almost totally forgotten.
