Lady Helen insists on going to the Derby even though her husband died just three weeks before, and she knows that her behavior is considered shocking. Two men ask why she is going and she refuses to say. Finally she reveals that her late husband had a horse in the Derby, so she is there to watch it run. This is hardly a discreditable reason, so it is puzzling that she is so secretive. Nor could the fact be kept secret, as she would be publicly listed as the owner, and she must be well known in the racing community. Indeed, when the horse wins, everyone around her in the owners' box applauds, so they must know that she is its owner.

Entertainingly lightweight drama

A British drama; A story about people mingling on the day of Britain's richest and most prestigious flat horse race meeting at Epsom Downs. This is an absorbing ensemble piece about the fates of a French maid, a murderer, and an aristocrat, and how their personal stories interconnect. The cultural backdrop and rituals of the British class system cleverly blend for dramatic and comic effect. How they all end up is what keeps it going, how lives are transformed and the friendships made. But its appeal rests firmly with its star players, Anna Neagle and Michael Wilding, who have a splendid chemistry. There is good support from Googie Withers.
