Dutch football

International football

The Netherlands men's team played their first international match away against Belgium on 30 April 1905 - a truly historic day for Dutch football and a memorable occasion for Eddy de Neve and Ben Stom in particular. De Neve notched all four goals for the Netherlands in a cliffhanger that went into extra time after Stom had scored an own goal.

Men's football

Football is the most popular sport in the Netherlands. It was introduced to the Netherlands in 1879 by a 14-year-old boy, Pim Mulier, who founded Haarlemsche Football Club. Many clubs followed, including current top-tier professional clubs as Sparta Rotterdam (1888), Ajax Amsterdam(1900), Feyenoord Rotterdam (1908) and PSV Eindhoven (1913).

Women’s football

Worldwide, 29 million girls and women play football, making it the biggest sport for women internationally. In the Netherlands, too, women's football is gaining huge momentum.

The KNVB wants to keep international football as fair, sportsmanlike and attractive as possible.

Development and innovation

The KNVB is committed to developing women’s and youth football, improving standards of governance in football and enhancing its technical capabilities.

Events

In the years to come, the KNVB will focus on preparing bids to host major international events in the Netherlands. The next one? FIFA Women's World Cup 2027, together with the Belgian (RBFA) and German (DFB) football associations: BNG 2027.
