Editor’s note: Since this article was published, LastPass has confirmed that it had been breached and users’ password vaults were compromised in August 2022. A class action lawsuit was filed in January 2023 for “failure to exercise reasonable care in securing and safeguarding highly sensitive consumer data.” This is a red flag worth investigating and possibly taking action. LastPass recommends changing passwords and remaining alert for phishing scams. For more details visit the LastPass blog.
If you are an individual professional or sole proprietor on the lookout for a free password manager, LastPass is a great option. It does run into issues for anyone wanting more than a bare-bones password management tool. Free account users have the choice of managing their passwords through their computer or mobile device.
LastPass gives you the ability to manage an unlimited number of passwords in a secure vault. You can save and autofill passwords or create new ones using a generator. You can also perform one-to-one password sharing. Though somewhat rudimentary, LastPass still provides multifactor authentication, including its LastPass Authenticator tool.
LastPass is in line with various password management services that severely limit their freeware in the hopes of convincing customers to upgrade. That is likely why you get access to premium features as part of a 30-day trial when you create an account. You also need to upgrade to experience more advanced security features and personalized customer service.
For businesses, premium tiers start at $5 CAD per month, per person through the LastPass Teams plan. As there are no monthly payment options, everything is charged upfront in an annual payment plan.
LastPass could be the last password manager you will ever need, even if you don’t upgrade to advanced features. It might not be for everyone, but if you are looking for a simple and free password manager, it could be for you.
Who should use it:
Unless you intend to upgrade to a premium LastPass tier, the freeware is probably best for individuals or two-person business teams.
