Chapitre 1 : Émile Durkheim ou l'invention de la sociologie. Les fondements de la sociologie européenne (I) Emile Durkheim est considéré comme le père fondateur de la sociologie en France et, dans une moindre mesure, en Europe. Il veut fonder une science de la société: construire une condition de scientificité et fonder une discipline universitaire se distinguant de la philosophie et de la psychologie (comportement individuel), du discours général et du sens commun. Pour Durkheim la sociologie est la science des sociétés, il a une vision scientiste. Il croit à la science et pense qu'il peut y avoir un discours scientifique sur la société. Pour cela, il faut délimiter un objet (champs d'études) et une méthode. Cette méthode doit permettre un discours rigoureux sur la société et appuyé sur des preuves. Son objectif est de trouver des lois sociales et de la même façon de prouver qu'elles sont justes, à l'image d'autres sciences qui découvrent les lois de la nature. Modèle : sciences naturelles et méthode scientifique applicable à tous les objets sociaux. Nous verrons donc la méthode et son application. I. Une démarche sociologique, partir de la société. I.1. Biographie rapide d'Émile Durkheim. a) Le parcours personnel. Née en 1858 à Épinal et décédé en 1917 à Paris. Il vient d'une famille juive et est destiné à devenir rabbin comme son père. Étant bon élève il continue ses études et entre à l'École normale supérieure en 1879 et poursuit des études de philosophie et devient militant laïc. Il enseigne plus tard au lycée tout en poursuivant ses recherches en sciences sociales. Finalement il fait une thèse de doctorat : « De la division du travail social », dans laquelle il s'intéresse à l'intégration sociale. Il devient professeur d'université à Bordeaux puis à la Sorbonne. b) Le contexte historique : changement social et politique. C'est un contexte de changement social à différents niveaux : politique (mouvements populaires, naissance du socialisme, mouvement ouvrier et syndical), social et économique (exode rural, développement des villes, développement du salariat, du capitalisme). Exemple : En 1931 50% de ruraux et 50% d'urbains. Maintenant +80% d'urbains. Il y a une période de changement politique, naissance du syndicalisme, du socialisme et de mouvement révolutionnaire. La société change et en même temps le regard politique sur la société se modifie (mouvement socialiste, critique du capitalisme). La naissance de la sociologie s'intègre dans ce mouvement de changement social: il s'agit de comprendre la société et de la connaître (enquêtes). c) Les oeuvres principales.

CIVILISATION — Pendant les années de formation de Lévi-Strauss, l'objet de l'anthropologie était focalisé sur les peuples « primitifs » et « non civilisés». Le mot « civilisation » indiquait l'état considéré comme le plus développé d'une société humaine, c'est-à-dire essentiellement celui propre aux sociétés blanches occidentales. Il était d'ailleurs généreusement étendu à d'autres groupes humains pourvu qu'ils incluent quelque forme d'écriture, des technologies avancées, une organisation sociale formalisée, des systèmes religieux complexes et, éventuellement, des constructions monumentales. Dans toute son oeuvre Lévi—Strauss s'attache à critiquer cette vision ethnocentrique en montrant qu'on est en même temps tous des sauvages, parce qu'on utilise les mêmes procès logiques dans les forêts du Mato Grosso que sur les boulevards de Paris, et tous des civilisés, bien qu'on ait à faire à des formes différentes de civilisation. La formulation la plus accom-plie de sa position est proposée dans Race et Histoire (à l'origine d'une virulente polémique avec Roger Caillois en 1955). D'abord, on ne peut pas à proprement parler de sociétés primitives, c'est-à-dire de sociétés qui seraient restées comme bloquées dans une phase historique ancienne. Il y a plutôt des groupes sociaux dont l'histoire est inconnaissable, principalement parce qu'ils n'ont pas laissé de documents écrits ou de traces matérielles durables. Donc, c'est du point de vue de l'utilisation de l'écriture et de la richesse de leur culture matérielle qu'on pourrait distinguer les sociétés civilisées des non civilisées.
