In the isolated bronchial preparation of the guinea-pig, nicotine induced a contraction but not a relaxation. The contractile response of the bronchial preparation to nicotine was inhibited by hexamethonium and d-tubocurarine but not influenced by atropine and tetrodotoxin. In the isolated tracheal preparation of the guinea-pig where nicotine stimulated nicotinic receptor in nervous tissues, the contractile response to nicotine as considerably accelerated by the treatment of the guinea-pig with egg-albumin, while the contractile response of the bronchial preparation to nicotine was not influenced by the same treatment. These results suggest that a possible site of action of nicotine in the isolated bronchial preparation is not on the nervous cells but on the smooth muscle cells. However, we could not rule out a contribution by chemical mediators released by nicotine in the contractile mechanisms in the bronchial preparation.

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the presence of pathogenic mycoplasma species in the turkey population of Turkey. Tracheal samples randomly collected from a total of 624 apparently healthy meat-type turkeys at a commercial abattoir located in the north of the country were examined by culture and genus- and species-specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays for mycoplasma. In the direct plating onto solid specific media, mycoplasma growth was observed from 1.4% (9/624) of the samples, which were confirmed to belong to the Mycoplasma genus by genus-specific PCR. Mycoplasma iowae (MI) and M. meleagridis (MM) were identified by the species-specific PCR from eight and one of the samples, respectively. However, genus-specific PCR amplification was obtained from 2.6% (16/624) of the samples which produced turbidity in the liquid media. Supraglottic stenosis/collapse is an uncommon condition. It can be difficult to detect and may be a cause of failed decannulation following tracheostomy. We present a novel technique to correct supraglottic stenosis/collapse. We performed a retrospective analysis of the records of patients in whom attempts at decannulation had failed at our center between 2003 and 2007. A subgroup with supraglottic stenosis/collapse with posterior displacement of the base of the epiglottis was identified. Our epiglottic repositioning procedure was performed in these patients. Through an external incision, the epiglottis was divided above the anterior commissure and attached to the superior border of the thyroid cartilage. In 1978 a surgical procedure was developed to create a neoglottis from the upper tracheal rings to facilitate speech rehabilitation in patients who had undergone total laryngectomy for carcinoma of the larynx. To date, 45 such procedures have been performed and results indicate rapid postoperative speech rehabilitation in nearly all patients, good long-term speech results, and low morbidity. This procedure has served as a very successful alternative to the more frequently used tracheoesophageal puncture (TEP) and prosthetic valve technique.

A computational study is presented for the transport of liquids and insoluble surfactant through the lung airways, delivered from a source at the distal end of the trachea. Four distinct transport regimes are considered: 1) the instilled bolus may create a liquid plug that occludes the large airways but is forced peripherally during mechanical ventilation; 2) the bolus creates a deposited film on the airway walls, either from the liquid plug transport or from direct coating, that drains under the influence of gravity through the first few airway generations; 3) in smaller airways, surfactant species form a surface layer that spreads due to surface-tension gradients, i.e., Marangoni flows; and 4) the surfactant finally reaches the alveolar compartment where it is cleared according to first-order kinetics. Congenital malformations can be manifested as combinations of phenotypes that co-occur more often than expected by chance. In many such cases, it has proved difficult to identify a genetic cause. We sought the genetic cause of cardiac, vertebral, and renal defects, among others, in unrelated patients. We used genomic sequencing to identify potentially pathogenic gene variants in families in which a person had multiple congenital malformations. We tested the function of the variant by using assays of in vitro enzyme activity and by quantifying metabolites in patient plasma. We engineered mouse models with similar variants using the CRISPR (clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats)-Cas9 system. The effect of ionized air containing negatively charged ions at a concentration of 320000–350000 ions/cm3 inhaled by rats was studied. It was demonstrated that the inhalation of negative air ions for 60 min activated the secretion of goblet cells without impairing the tracheal mucosa and changing the protein profile of bronchoalveolar lavage. It was also found that the level of spontaneous production of reactive oxygen species by unfractionated blood cells increased after the action of negative air ions in both males and females. However, the intensity of their generation induced by opsonized zymosan increased only in females. Different sensitivities of the female and male blood antioxidant enzymes—superoxide dismutase and glutathione reductase—to negative air ions were observed. These results allow the effect of negative air ions on the respiratory organs and blood to be interpreted as priming and weak activation via a direct action on the mucosa of primary target respiratory organs and then on the blood.

Nous rapportons l’observation d’un homme de 68 ans qui avait consulté pour dyspnée et hémoptysie. La fibroscopie bronchique avait montré une formation bourgeonnante au niveau du versant postérieur de la carène. Des biopsies bronchiques étagées étaient réalisées et avaient conclu à une amylose de type AL. L’amylose trachéobronchique localisée est une affection très rare, pouvant simuler une tumeur bronchique surtout lorsqu’elle survient chez un sujet de sexe masculin et tabagique.The authors report the case of a 68-year-old man complaining of haemoptysis and breathlessness. Bronchoscopy revealed a budding formation in tracheal bifurcation. Multiple biopsies were performed and concluded as to AL type amyloidosis. Tracheobronchial amyloidosis is an uncommon localised form of amyloidosis that can simulate lung cancer.

Psittacosis, an avian disease caused by Chlamydophila psittaci, can manifest as an acute, protracted, or chronic illness, but can also be asymptomatic. C. psittaci can persist in the host for months to years, often without causing obvious illness, and therefore poses a threat for zoonotic outbreak. We investigated the prevalence of C. psittaci from 156 tracheal swab samples from 34 different species of parrots in Poland, and determined the genotype of strains from the positive samples. An overall prevalence of 10.3% was observed using two different PCR assays, both providing similar results. Thirteen of the PCR-positive samples were genotype A, two were genotype B, and one could not be classified. These results indicate widespread dissemination of C. psittaci in Polish psittacine populations, without any clinical signs of chlamydiosis, and hence could pose a zoonotic hazard.
