Serial killers

After almost 25 years of mass media coverage on the Claremont Serial Killings, Perth audiences were informed in December 2020 that Bradley Robert Edwards would serve two life sentences for murdering two of the young women. This article draws on interviews with journalists to discuss media practices in the case that shocked Perth while shaping audience understandings of women as victims. The article describes how the term 'serial killer' came into use to bolster the importance of Western Australian news; how the status and resources of victim's family influenced media coverage and, consequently, the police investigation; and, how the position of a journalist as an unbiased observer became untenable in the case.

This book presents serial killers as having disorders of imagination, imagopathy, seen through deficiencies such as failure of empathy, rigid fantasies, and unresolved projections. This disorder is a form of failed alchemy. This study challenges long-held assumptions that the Jungian concept of individuation is a purely healthful drive. Serial killers are unable to form insight after projecting untenable material onto their victims. Criminal profilers must therefore effect that insight, using active imagination, informed by their own reactions, on violent crime scene imagery. This book posits sexual homicides as irrational shadow images in our rationalistic modern culture. Consequently, profilers bridge conscious and unconscious for both inexorably splintered killers and the culture at large.
After establishing the dark fictional and non-fictional landscape of criminal profiling, Jungian Crime Scene Analysis examines how two experts, John Douglas and Robert Ressler, tacitly apply imaginal techniques in order to gather evidence about their quarries. Jungian approaches to active imagination and countertransference help to define this forensic project, grounded in the archetypal psychology concept of image.

El concepto de asesino en serie, es algo relativamente reciente, se pueden distinguir tres grandes tipos diferentes de asesinos, los asesinos de masa o asesino itinerante y el asesino en serie. Muchos autores han querido saber el por qué o el cómo han llegado a ello, centrando su investigación en la infancia. Presentan tres características esenciales ligadas entre si como el sadismo sexual, las fantasías y la compulsión por cumplir la fantasía de matar y suele cometer homicidio por tres motivos como la justificación, el poder o la vitalidad. Hay diversas clasificaciones de los asesinos en serie, aunque la más sonada es asesinos en serie organizados y desorganizados, y algunos autores añaden uno mixto. Eliminando la falta de información se hizo una clasificación de la tipología de asesinas en serie, donde principalmente destaca la distinción de si actúan solas o en asociación a otros. El perfil criminológico utilizado para atrapar estos asesinos se compone por diferentes elementos incluidos en el profiling. A controversial characteristic in F. H. Batacan’sSmaller and Smaller Circles is the humanization of its antagonist, Alejandro Benitez-Carlos Jr. (also known as Alex). In the story, he was a cruel serial killer who dehumanizes the bodies of his young victims. However, he was not born this way; his parents knew him before as a good child. In fact, his crimes are because of his tragic past as a product of sexual abuse. This paper will analyze Alex Carlos's development into a serial killer through Lacanian psychoanalysis.  This is because of the prominent presence of loss/lack in the work (e.g. life, dignity). First, his peaceful life in early childhood will be explored as a representation of the Imaginary Order. Next, the abuse will be analyzed as the cause of his entrance to the Symbolic Order, where he has no control over his circumstances. Instead, it will be in the hands of the Other: his family, classmates, and especially his P.E. teacher. After being scarred by the Other, killing boys will be his unsuccessful way of pursuing his objet petit a: a life without trauma.

This document contains my investigation into the representations of serial killers and their crimes in both fictional TV series and in non-fiction documentaries and interviews. The two genres are compared by their language use to be able to deduct what differences and similarities there are in the presentation of murder. This investigation is a part of my A-Level English Language Coursework and I was given the freedom to choose a topic I was very passionate about and was in relation to what I am going to study at university - Forensic Psychology.

With female murderers recognised for the newspaper representations they receive, it is of interest to study the nature of them in relation to real life criminal cases. This dissertation provides an analysis of the newspaper portrayals of killers Myra Hindley and Rose West, and considers them within the ‘mad’, ‘bad’ and ‘sad’ labels placed on women who kill. With existing research on Hindley and West’s portrayals focused around their criminal trials, this dissertation instead explores their depictions at the time of their whole life tariff impositions. This study involved the use of a quantitative and qualitative content analysis of 40 newspaper articles, that enabled language used in their coverage to be formulated into themes informing of their depictions. The findings in this study have illustrated that Hindley and West’s portrayals heavily reflected the ‘bad’ woman narrative similarly addressed in existing research. In addition, it finds support for their representations as the less acknowledged ‘mad’ and ‘sad’ woman that not only reinforced their ‘badness’, but challenged the reactions we expect with these two narratives. By also discovering portrayal categories not acknowledged by research, this study demonstrates how female murderer representations are more complicated than we assume, and leaves questions regarding why Hindley and West were portrayed in this complex way.

Zodiac (2007) Movie Analysis Zodiac Killer is one the most well-known criminals in modern history. He is never caught officially and left so many question marks. This complicated and incomplete case inspired many books, movies, and documentaries, Zodiac Killer is still not forgotten and remain one of the greatest mysteries in criminal history. Zodiac (2007) movie by David Fincher is also one of the artworks that refer to this case. The movie is an adaptation from the Robert Graysmith's own book (IMDB, Zodiac, 2007), he is the caricaturist of Zodiac Killer's favorite newspaper and also one of the researchers of the case. In this paper, the portrayal of the Zodiac killer in this 2007 movie is analyzed in terms of forensic psychology. In order to specify and narrow down the analysis; the paper is separated into three main subjects. At the first part of the paper the two FBI approach steps (data assimilation, crime scene classification) are anchored, and at the second part also the UK approaches of location (locatedness, centrality, systematic choice) are used as the skeleton of the analysis. The last two parts of the FBI approach is not used because it requires physical reconstruction. In the third section, the other forensic psychology related terms (psychological profiling and additionals) are analyzed. Personal commentation also has sprinkled in the parts accordingly. Data Assimilation Data assimilation refers to the data collection, evidence collection from every possible useful source. In the movie, the data assimilation was pretty complex. Each police department of different states have their own pieces of evidence and data, but usually, they were not willing to share the data with each other. Negli ultimi due anni i media italiani hanno dato acriticamente credito ad una imbarazzante e strampalata teoria criminologica, che collegherebbe 7 (ma ultimamente sono diventati 8) delitti insoluti-le cui vittime furono tutte donne, uccise a Milano negli anni '60 e '70 in varie circostanze-per sostenere l'ipotesi che vedrebbe dietro questi delitti la mano di un unico omicida, un "serial killer", il presunto "mostro di Milano".

Perhaps one of the most motivated manipulators of the 21st century, John Robinson convinced several women to move their flirtations and exchanges offline and into the real world, manipulating women to move long distances to become his mistresses through underground BDSM chatrooms. The women were kept in various dens he provided – at times, with money defrauded from the collected social security of previous victims – until her grew tired of them, bludgeoned them, and disposed of them. His vicious crimes were made infamous by his being the first internet serial killer.

Today crime is the central point of an extensive production of books, films and TV series. Dexter is just one of the TV series that has enjoyed wide critical acclaim and popularity. The show's first season was largely based on the novel Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay, the first of his Dexter novels. However, subsequent seasons have evolved independently of Lindsay's works. The series centers on Dexter Morgan who is a police bloodstain pattern analyst by day and a serial killer by night. Even though the main protagonist is a murderer, someone who by any moral standard could be referred to as an “evil person”, the manner of his presentation and the narrative techniques used are bound to evoke sympathy from the viewers. Dexter is an intelligent, hard-working, likeable person who is devoted to his family. Moreover he follows a code which ensures that he only kills “bad people”. One can claim that the viewer supports Dexter in his struggles to bring “justice”. Consequently, the story shows the relativity of terms like “crime” and “punishment”, “good” and “evil”. The paper aims at analyzing the phenomena of the TV series Dexter by analyzing the representation of the protagonist and the narrative techniques used to evoke sympathy from the audience. I will also discuss the changes made for the TV adaptation and their implication."

The proliferation of networks using narrowcasting for their original drama serials in the United States proved that protagonist types different from conventional heroes can appeal to their target audiences. While this success of anti-hero narratives in television serials starting from late 1990s raises the question of “quality television”, developing audience measurement models of networks make alternative narratives based on anti-heroes become widespread on the U.S. television industry. This thesis examines the development of the anti-hero on the U.S. television by focusing on the protagonists of pay-cable serials The Sopranos (1999-2007) and Dexter (2006-2013), basic cable serials The Shield (2002-2008) and Mad Men (2007-2015), and video-on-demand serials House of Cards (2013- ) and Hand of God (2014- ). In brief, this thesis argues that the use of anti-hero narratives in television is directly related to the narrowcasting strategy of networks and their target audience groups, shaping a template for growing networks and newly formed distribution services to enhance the brand of their corporations. In return, the anti-hero narratives push the boundaries of conventional hero in television with the protagonists becoming morally less tolerable and more complex, introducing diversity to television serials and paving the way even for mainstream broadcast networks to develop serials based on such protagonists.
