This poster is part of a group of posters created by historians on the theme of "Les Cathares : une idée reçue" for a travelling exhibition for the general public sponsored by the national organisation "Fête de la Science".

This poster discusses in broad terms the origins of the inquisition into heresy and complex position of early inquisitors. Readers are challenged to some source criticism: looking for evidence of Cathars via a folio from Bibliothèque de Toulouse MS 609, the registry of the Great Inquisition at Toulouse.

The Satellite Applications Catapult has a remit to drive economic growth in the UK space sector. An important objective of this work is to educate potential new entrepreneurs, engineers and industry strategists on the functional capabilities of typical spacecraft platform technologies. With this the Catapult aims to open space to a new community who will bring novel and innovative new mission concepts to the market.
One such activity the is the development of a “build-your-own satellite” kit, based on the 5x5x5cm, sub-CubeSat PocketQube standard. Its aim is to teach the fundamentals of typical satellite subsystems. It is designed to demonstrate the accessibility of hardware similar to that used on a wide range of spacecraft to the general public. Our aim is to integrate the kit into workshops across the country, school and university curricula and into the hands of individuals, with the objective of creating a community of users sharing ideas through our website platform.
The kit is comprised of an Arduino-based on-board computer with integrated UHF radio, an electrical power system that includes solar panels and battery charge management, a prototyping and payload interface board, sample payloads and a platform structure with support for external antennae. These systems have all been built to be representative of flight-like design considerations.
Basing the on-board computer on the Arduino standard has allowed an easy-to-access PocketQube software library to be developed. This enables both the simple integration of open-source component libraries and the abstraction from direct access into a functional software model that is representative of a typical spacecraft.
Together, these hardware, software and educational elements provide a comprehensive satellite systems training tool that is accessible to a wide range of user backgrounds.

This chapter presents a framework for understanding how international courts (ICs) use socialization strategies to influence their performance. ICs can influence both their actual and perceived performance through internal and external socialization strategies. ICs can aim to improve their actual performance by socializing actors into ICs’ norms, rules, and procedures, and essentially clarifying their appropriate roles within international courts’ legal regimes. Internally, ICs improve their actual performance by socializing their judges and administrative officials into ICs’ norms, rules, and procedures. In addition, various dimensions of ICs’ actual performance are contingent on other actors’ behaviour within ICs’ legal regimes. ICs can therefore use external socialization strategies to align these actors’ standards of legitimate, appropriate behaviour with ICs’ norms, rules, and procedures, and thus improve ICs’ actual performance. ICs’ external socialization strategies can also be directed towards influencing actors’ perceptions of IC performance. As perceptions of performance are highly subjective and vary considerably among ICs’ various stakeholders, ICs can influence their perceived performance by disseminating particular normative standards for evaluating their performance. A comparative analysis of all twenty-three permanent, operational ICs reveals the prevalence of and variation in ICs’ internal and external socialization strategies, which influence ICs’ actual and perceived performance. Socialization is thus a key means by which ICs aim to improve various dimensions of their performance, as well as their stakeholders’ perceptions of it.

In an effort to put my knowledge on thirteenth-century Florence in general - and Brunetto Latini in particular - to practical use and to share it with a broad audience, I have designed, researched and written a travel guide to Medieval Florence.

This guide invites tourists to skip the beaten path of Renaissance Florence and to discover Medieval Florence instead. To this end, the guide consists of two walks (of 2,8 and 1,6 miles respectively) which introduce the visitor to the hillside, south of the city centre, and guide him/her deep into the heart of its city centre.

Desk-Based Assessment focused on the archaeological potential of Little John's Farm, Reading as the Reading Festival site. Part of the University of Reading's Imaginary Archaeology Outreach project, in conjunction with Reading Museum's Festival 50 celebrations in 2021.

Archaeological science adopts scientific techniques from different fields, such as biology, chemistry and geology, and applies them to the study of the human past. Even though there are many books with archaeological activities for children available, these are restricted to archaeological excavation, typological methods and other ‘traditional’ archaeological approaches with minimal, if any, reference to archaeological science methods. This is the gap that the current booklet aims at filling. The activities presented focus on familiarising students with basic methods in two broad fields: • Bioarchaeology (the study of organic remains, such as human and animal bones, and plant remains) • Archaeological materials and material culture (ceramics, glass, metals) For each activity, we provide the age range of the students to be involved; however, these ranges are only general approximations and it is up to the teacher to determine which students can participate in each activity or parts o...

Buku ini disusun berdasarkan hasil kegiatan KKN-PpMM di Desa Kalongsawah selama 32 hari. Ada 11 orang mahasiswa yang terlibat di kelompok ini, yang berasal dari 7 Fakultas yang berbeda. Kami namai kelompok ini dengan SECURAH, dengan nomor kelompok 067. Kami dibimbing oleh Bapak Dedy Nursamsi, S.H. M.Hum., beliau adalah dosen di Fakultas Syariah dan Hukum. Tidak kurang dari 11 kegiatan yang kami lakukan di desa tersebut, yang sebagian besar merupakan pelayanan kepada masyarakat dan sebagian kecilnya adalah pemberdayaan. Dengan fokus pada satu kampung, yaitu Kampung Kalongdagul, kegiatan-kegiatan yang kami lakukan menghabiskan dana sekitar Rp16.700.000,-. Dana tersebut kami dapatkan dari iuran anggota kelompok KKN sebesar Rp1.000.000,- per orang, dana penyertaan Program Pengabdian pada Masyarakat oleh Dosen (PpMD) UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta Rp5.000.000,-, dan dari hasil pengumpulan dana sebesar Rp700.000,-.
Dari hasil kegiatan yang kami lakukan, terdapat sejumlah keberhasilan yang telah kami raih, yaitu:
1. Meningkatnya peran masyarakat dalam pembangunan desa.
2. Bertambahnya motivasi peserta didik SD, SMP, untuk melanjutkan kuliah.
3. Bertambahnya pengetahuan masyarakat mengenai UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta.
4. Bertambahnya pembangunan fisik atau rehabilitasi bangunan, antara lain: Pembangunan Fasilitas Mandi, Cuci dan Kakus (MCK) Umum, Pembangunan Tempat Pembuangan Sampah Sementara (TPS), dan Pengadaan Tiang Penerangan Jalan.
Saat merencanakan dan implementasi kegiatan, terdapat sejumlah kendala yang kami hadapi, antara lain:
1. Kurangnya waktu untuk melakukan konsolidasi dan koordinasi dengan berbagai pihak, baik internal anggota kelompok, dosen pembimbing, pihak sponsor, maupun aparatur desa.
2. Kurangnya dana yang bisa terkumpul untuk memaksimalkan rencana kegiatan yang telah disusun.
3. Sejumlah masyarakat kurang merespons kegiatan kami karena antara satu RT dan yang lainnya tidak kompak dan saling mendukung.

Namun demikian, kami pada akhirnya bisa merampungkan sebagian besar rencana kegiatan kami. Adapun kekurangan-kekurangannya tersebut di antaranya:
1. Ketiadaan tempat pembuangan sementara untuk sampah warga desa yang seharusnya diteruskan ke tempat pembuangan akhir.
2. Kurangnya kesadaran masyarakat desa akan pentingnya menjaga kebersihan lingkungan.
3. Kurangnya fasilitas mandi, cuci, dan kakus yang memadai bagi seluruh masyarakat desa.

This project was initially a public engagement initiative aimed at providing empirical research to procure major problem areas in existing strategy for the management of tourism and heritage resources in the District of Kilwa, Tanzania. A series of questionnaires, interviews, community meetings, events, and other internal/external engagement was carried out, as well as desktop research and surveys to identify the condition and availability of tourism and heritage resources. The data obtained unearthed information about how Indigenous and/or remote communities could obtain sustainable wellbeing, and create business/tourism ventures by protecting, managing, and utilising their natural and cultural heritage resources. The project was also aimed to help foster and stimulate continuous cordial relationships between the community and central government. Subsequently, an assessment of organisational structure and communication strategy was carried out in order to identify and develop effective and sustainable working bodies and communication networks. The project culminated in the creation of a working document to be used as a practical working tool or reference for people and professionals to affiliate with the Kilwa District, such as investors, researchers, and general public entrepreneurs. The document can also be used as a guide for future presentation/discussion, and for prospective heritage management and community engagement projects in Tanzania, East Africa, and around the world.

The Lightning Ridge region displays rich geodiversity. Though best known for its valuable black opal, it is also world-renowned for yielding a diversity of opalised fossils, including invertebrates, reptiles, dinosaurs and some of the earliest known monotreme mammals. Cenozoic silcrete preserves impressions of fossil plants in great detail at several sites. At Cuddie Springs, 100 km SSW of Lightning Ridge, remains of extinct Pleistocene megafauna are found in association with Aboriginal tools. Numerous Aboriginal sites are also scattered around the ridges and along waterways. Over 100 years of mostly small-scale opal mining at Lightning Ridge is evidenced by historic workings and equipment that are unique to this area or rarely seen elsewhere. This valuable record of geoheritage is of interest to tourists, historians, scientists and artists. Geotourism is intimately linked with opal-mining and is a growing source of income to the region, on par with documented sales of opal itself. Managing such a diverse region presents a challenge, as diverse stakeholders can have confl icting objectives. Tourism has the potential to unite stakeholders and ensure the prosperity of the region long after the opal resources are exhausted. A whole-of-government approach is vital in ensuring sustainable development and prosperity of the region.

Visual narratives, such as comics and animations, are becoming increasingly popular as a tool for science education and communication. Combining the benefits of visualization with powerful metaphors and character-driven narratives, comics have the potential to make scientific subjects more accessible and engaging for a wider audience. While many authors have experimented with this medium, empirical research on the effects of visual narratives in science communication remains scarce. This review summarizes the available evidence across disciplines, highlighting the cognitive mechanisms that may underlie the effects of visual narratives. While “hoarding” is understood to be a mental health issue, the roots of the issue escape encapsulation. Historically, hoarding was linked to Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), while recent changes to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM–5) now categorize hoarding as a separate form of mental illness. Additionally, hoarding does not occur in a vacuum and is often linked with depression and anxiety, as well as various forms of trauma.

In both large bookstore chains and local comic book stores, it is relatively easy to find comics that focus on politics , history, and autobiographies. These comics are often incorporated into the curriculum in social studies classes at the primary, secondary, and college level, but there are far fewer science comics and even less research about their implementation. In this article, a brief rationale for the use of science comics is given based on five qualities—that they are motivating, visual, permanent, intermediary, and popular. Research projects that have studied the effectiveness of comics are summarized, but in many cases these studies have a small sample size or lack control groups. Following an introduction to science comics and their implementation, guidelines and resources are provided to help science communicators produce their own comics and to encourage educational studies into their use. As case studies, comics that I have worked on are described along with the results of how they were used, including page views and research projects.

The Egyptian view of the natural world is well understood: the landscape, whose elements were deified and personified, was viewed as an active and influential force on daily life. However, scholars have yet to fully consider the ideological and political functions of royal monuments carved directly into the landscape. There are, in fact, many cases where Egypt’s kings chose not to erect monuments in order to make official statements, but instead to inscribe their messages directly into the landscape, on what we call “living rock.” Many royal living-rock stelae appear to have been commissioned as a strategy for the affirmation, control, and surveillance of Egypt’s peripheries during times of territorial expansion.

Museums have evolved through the years, from collections of imperial sovereignty to enlightenment institutions for the population, until now to the museum as a business enterprise in our consumer society (Janes & Sandell, 2018). No matter the social-environmental and political conditions, museums have always had an ‘adaptive intuition’ that made institution transform themselves. Here, change in programming formats offer the chance to reach out to new audience as active participants and yet, the neoliberal agenda often overturn the latter to passive consumer.
Through the case study of the Munch on the Move project, my research explores how the Munch Museum uses different formats of programming to become relevant for its domestic audience and its community. An analysis of the events of the MoM was carried out by the use of the content analysis, along with a comparison with the ongoing changes of the museum. Drawing on Simon’s (2006; 2011) and Claire Bishop (2012) theories regarding the participatory museum and audience as spectator and participant, I argue that outreach experimental activities have the potential to change the relationship with its community only if the museum enact the audience in the role of active participant through co-production. At its core, the off-site projects of Munch on the Move are not about establishing a stable relationship but start a kindle of interest.

This short chapter (written for a general audience) is my contribution to a larger public outreach project by a land surveyor, René van der Schans, on the boundaries of Erasmus's physical presence in Rotterdam. In this contribution I focus on the relationship between Erasmus and Terminus.

This poster details the archaeological collections housed at the University of Wyoming Archaeological Repository (UWAR) located in Laramie. The repository houses approximately 3 million artifacts from 15,000 different Wyoming sites as well as comparative, replica, experimental, and educational materials. We highlight our extensive suite of artifacts from across the state, which includes artifacts from all time periods from the Paleoindian to the Historic. Many of these objects are submitted through private donations, academic research, or are curated by contractors through Section 106 projects. We also discuss our partnerships with state, federal, and local agencies to complete education and outreach programs. These programs increase awareness and use of our archaeological collections in a variety of ways including hosting visiting researchers, loans to museums and historical societies, exhibit preparation, school group tours and classroom activity development, and an archaeological collections management class for undergraduates and graduates at the university. Finally, we show how we have used information from our own research on older collections to enhance modern investigations.

New South Wales has an estimated 1800 historic shipwreck sites and an active Historic Shipwrecks Program, administered by the Heritage Branch, NSW Department of Planning. The Wreck Spotters program was established to help the community manage fragile maritime archaeological sites, both underwater and on land.

The city of Pensacola, Florida, has been attempting to create a heritage tourism industry for half a century but has never achieved the same level of success of the other notable destinations that they were trying to emulate. This is, in part, due to a significant level of development in the historic district, much of which is now historic as well, combined with an impressively complex history concentrated in a relatively small area. If Pensacola, or any community in a similar situation, is to develop an effective heritage tourism program, then a well-organized plan is needed. This paper presents a model, along with the most basic level of information required, for the development of an interpretive program in downtown Pensacola which aims to provide the best possible results for the community, the tourist, and the archaeological resources.

This research was funded by, and implemented within, a UK national research organisation, while the author was the KE and Impact Evaluation Manager responsible for assessing impact on a £15m UK government-funded research programme.

This work was also submitted as the authors MBA dissertation which was accepted and awarded in 2009.

ABSTRACT: A methodology and methods ‘toolbox’ is proposed for conducting impact research and assessment from within research programmes. The emphasis is upon how to clarify and assess the wider impacts from the early stages onwards.

The approach explicitly acknowledges, and attempts to address, the known issues and challenges of impact assessment while drawing upon the resources and opportunities available to research managers and researchers within such programmes.

The study has two triangulating foundations. Firstly, it examines the academic literature to help identify and design the pilot methodology and methods. Secondly it trials these in a real programme to both test and improve them.

The study was conducted over one year within one leading UK research organisation, where two research programmes (and around 60 research projects of £15m total value) were being assessed for their impacts. The study draws upon actual impact management experience and reflection, prospective (ex ante) and retrospective (ex post) assessments, participatory contributions from leading researchers undergoing assessment, and consultation with external users. The findings of this study outline the pilot and its first iteration. Recommendations are made for improvement to the methodology and methods.

A subsequent follow-on bid to UK government incorporating the impacts identified from implementing this methodology, successfully led to a further £15m of government funding.

It is expected the pilot methodology and methods will be applicable to other organisations, conducting and funding such research programmes, required to research and assess the wider research impacts.

Although primary focus of implemetation trials was upon research in physical sciences, technology, high-tech engineering, computing/IT, and environment, the wider literature study, the methodology design and justification, the methods proposed and used, and the resulting general recommendations and lessons are expected to apply more broadly to many other research areas, where the impact is to be found more widely in the society, economy, government or public sector or within organizations, policies, professions or the public.

Interest in this work is expected from research programme managers, impact managers and assessors, management consultants advising in this area, and government funding managers, all seeking to embed a developing approach to understand, capture, and enhance wider impact.

This article discusses outreach and bridge-building between a self-access center (SAC), called the Community Learning International Plaza (CLIP), and various groups at a sports- focused university in greater Tokyo. When the SAC opened three years ago (April 2017), students and faculty did not know its purpose. Therefore, CLIP teachers and administrators (the authors of this paper) saw the need to conduct outreach to educate teachers and students about self-access language learning (SALL) and the services offered. Through orientation sessions, we were able to informally speak with subject teachers who were accompanying their students, learn if they might be interested in collaborating on future student programs, and plan accordingly. We were also approached by student clubs and teams to make workshops that fit particular needs (e.g., English for life saving and Indonesian/English communication for teaching rugby in Indonesia through JICA). Outreach and bridge-building connect the CLIP to users who otherwise may not have sought out services. In this way, the SAC acts as a bridge between language classes and real-life English opportunities (Cotterall & Reinders, 2000) through workshops that simulate real-life situations and promote self-efficacy and second language use. Outreach has been successful both in making the SAC relevant and in helping us set up English for specific purposes (ESP) programs tailored specifically to the needs of students at this campus.

I am co-planning a conference on "Shipwrecks in the Intertidal Zone", dealing with this topic from different angles: The archaeology and site formation of the wreck sites, the historical narratives connected to the wrecks in terms of crews, wreckers and beachcombers, and last not least the public interest in these sites, channelled through volunteer involvement like site monitoring and museum exhibitions.

We have already received very interesting international papers from Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon to Auckland, and are now in the progress of finalising the programme in order to raise funding for this conference.
