Pontormo

This study is devoted to the emotional experience of the famous Renaissance sculptor, goldsmith, and writer, Benvenuto Cellini (1500–1571), as it is portrayed in his life writing, the Vita. Providing the variety of arguments on the connection between the artist and contemporary intellectuals, who attended the Florentine Academy (1540–1583) together, I demonstrate that Cellini’s literary production can be examined productively against the background of Neoplatonic thought. In particular, Marsilio Ficino’s On Love, first published in the vernacular Italian in 1544, helps to establish an explanation of what Cellini meant when he decided to play the cornet while falling in love simultaneously with a young boy and girl, or  how he justified kicking or punching his servants, or why he did not kill his adversary, the artist Baccio Bandinelli, when he had the chance. These cases of radical affectivity are inscribed into Ficino’s concept of the “melancholy genius” manifesting melancholic madness. In Cellini’s Vita, the latter can not only turn humans almost into beast, literally (for example, in a bat); but, properly tempered by the means of music and poetry, as well as of individual and collective magic, it elevates one’s soul “on high,” which corresponds to the Neoplatonic concept of divine madness.

The article discusses Andrea del Sarto's use of cartoons throughout his career and gradual transition to the involvement of members of the workshop in the design process. Presented here for the first time with an attribution to Andrea del Sarto is a large-scale fragment of a drawing of a young boy looking and pointing toward the right, the only surviving example of a fully autograph cartoon for a painting within the artist’s corpus of drawings and a crucial missing link for the full understanding of his working method.

Michelangelo’s lost Noli Me Tangere cartoon for Vittoria Colonna is known to us today through the painted copies of Pontormo (1531), Bronzino (1531-32), and Battista Franco (1537).  These paintings bear witness to the originality of Michelangelo’s composition, which defies iconographical expectations established for scenes of the Noli me tangere.  His innovative interpretation of the subject focuses on the Magdalene’s privilege and the worth and redemptive power of her words and deeds, rather than her sinful past and penitence, as was typical of other renditions of the Noli me tangere.  By celebrating the more empowered aspects of the Magdalene’s identity, this painting participates visually in the debate raging in humanist and theological circles over the status of women in religion and society, and not only reflects Colonna’s personal devotion to the Magdalene but also her active participation in the contemporary pro-feminist dialogue.

This essay postulates that the excessively articulated forms of artists working in the first half of the sixteenth century, specifically the sacred mourning imagery of Jacopo Pontormo, Rosso Fiorentino, and Daniele da Volterra, may have functioned to make the internal visible at a time when the center of Christianity was itself shaken to its core. By reconciling Counter-Reformation interests in seeing into the hearts of potentially heretical Christians with the developing science of anatomy and the theory of the four humors—yellow bile, black bile, blood and phlegm—formulated by the ancient author, Galen, the Mannerist style of these images is re-interpreted as visual metaphor for the body’s interior humoral movements. The stylish fluidity of Mannerist treatments of the Lamentation, including the gendered display of emotions therein, would inspire an empathetic response from viewers who would recognize in these undulating forms echoes of the ebbs and flows of their own humoral interior processes. Rather than breaking with High Renaissance visual traditions, these artists pushed their depictions of reality to its most personal, most internal and thereby displayed what the Reformation Church most desperately sought to reveal: the interior of the human self.

Desde el 8 de marzo y hasta el 20 de julio de 2014, la Fundación Palazzo Strozzi de Florencia ha presentado una magna exposición dedicada a Pontormo (1494-1557) y Rosso Fiorentino (1494-1540).  Palazzo Strozzi ha sido desde principios del siglo XX uno de los centros expositivos más activos y consolidados de Florencia, al que siempre se le han reservado las más exhaustivas exposiciones. Ya en 1956 albergó la primera gran exposición dedicada a Pontormo con el título Il Pontormo e il Primo Manierismo Fiorentino. Posteriormente, a partir del año 2006, con la constitución de la Fundación que lleva el nombre del palacio, ha consolidado aún más su reputación como gran centro de exposiciones, realizando honradas muestras como la dedicada a Agnolo Bronzino (1503-1572) en 2010 o la titulada La Primavera del Rinascimento en 2013.

The fascinating issue underlying Benedetto Varchi's Due Lezzioni opens up a multiplicity of views and approaches. At the crossroads of disciplines and sectors that are often separated, the dispute on the 'Paragone' requires an effort of interdisciplinary openness in order to bring together aspects that are otherwise unconnected and therefore poorly understood.
The debate decisively involves the artists' approach to operative practice: in the lines of the letters to Varchi we can gather important indications on executive practices considered to be for 'insiders', and for this reason normally concealed.

L’affascinante tematica sottesa alle Due Lezzioni di Benedetto Varchi apre una molteplicità di sguardi e di possibilità di approccio. Crocevia di discipline e di settori spesso separati, la disputa sulla maggioranza delle arti obbliga a uno sforzo di apertura interdisciplinare per coniugare aspetti  altrimenti slegati e per questo poco compresi. Il dibattito coinvolge in maniera determinante l’approccio degli artisti alla prassi operativa: fra le righe delle lettere al Varchi possiamo cogliere indicazioni importanti su pratiche esecutive considerate da ‘addetti ai lavori’, e per questo normalmente sottaciute.

A study of the documentation relating to the Compagnia del Corpus Domini in Figline Valdarno, housed in the Florence State Archives, makes it possible to unquestionably establish the authorship of two oil paintings on wood panel of the 'Sorrowful Virgin' and 'Saint John in mourning', now in the sacristy of the local Collegiate of Santa Maria, to the early period of Ludovico Cigoli. These formed the lateral elements of a 'macchina d'altare' dedicated to the Holy Crucifix, dismantled in the eighteenth century during a modernisation project that also involved the painting in the vaults above by Tommaso Gherardini, in 1774. Cigoli's two panels, datable to 1586-1587, provide a key element for the understanding of his stylistic evolution, when after his early works, influenced by Pontormo's maniera, he turned to the more experimental stimuli prompted by his discovery of Correggio and Barocci.

"The Painting by Pontormo from the Collection of August Kestner and its first 160 Years in Hannover - A contribution to Collection History" - Essay to the publication (edited by Bastian Eclercy) accompanying the exhibition "Pontormo. Meisterwerke des Manierismus in Florenz" at Niedersächsisches Landesmuseum Hannover (27 January - 5 May 2013) - "The atoning St Hieronymus" is the only painting of the Florence Maniristic painter Jacopo Carucci (1494-1556/7), called after his native town Pontormo, in a public collection in Germany. It was part of the private collection of August Kestner (1777-1853) assembled in Rome during the last 37 years of his life. It can be seen in a 1853 watercolor of Kestner's salon in Palazzo Tomati in Via Gregoriana (Cat. 12, page 191). Bequested to his native town Hannover his entire art collection ended up at Kestner-Museum which opened its doors to the public in 1889. After WW2 it was lended to the Painting Gallery of Niedersächsisches Landesmuseum Hannover where in 1951 it has been attributed to the famous painter. Since then it is a highlight of the department of Italian paintings at the Hannover museum. - (in German)

Il volume, catalogo della mostra ospitata negli spazi monumentali della Certosa del Galluzzo, offre un approfondimento sull'opera di Agnolo Bronzino, che lì operò negli anni Venti del Cinquecento assieme al maestro Jacopo Pontormo. Il Ritratto di Dante e le lunette del chiostro con scene della Passione di Cristo sono al centro di un percorso che si snoda tra temi storico-artistici e altri più squisitamente letterari, rendendo anche omaggio alla figura di Dante Alighieri di cui nel 2021 ricorrono i 700 anni dalla morte. Il saggio attraversa cinque secoli di iconografia dellacasiana, analizzando dipinti, medaglie, incisioni, frontespizi illustrati delle edizioni a stampa delle sue opere (dalle Cinquecentine fino ai libri attualmente in commercio), e fa il punto sui ritratti reali, presunti, copiati, inventati o perduti – quello di Tiziano, ad esempio – del celebre letterato. Il tutto muove dall'analisi del ritratto di prelato di Pontormo della National Gallery di  Washington.

La novità è di quelle che lasciano il segno ed è destinata a far discutere a lungo. È stata una lunghissima, laboriosa e minuziosa ricerca, condotta nei fondi archivistici dell’archivio di stato di Firenze e in vari altri fondi dagli autori del volume “Gli statuti di Pontorme del 1346”, tesa ad individuare i riscontri documentali in grado di provare quella che all’inizio era soltanto un’ipotesi, a consentire la pubblicazione di una scoperta a dir poco eccezionale per la storia del territorio. A questo punto gli storici già sono sobbalzati sulle loro sedie, avendo visto la data 1346. Ed ecco perché. Dopo anni di ricerca e di confronti incrociati fra le fonti, dopo un lavoro immane di interpretazione su centinaia di documenti, è arrivata la novità tanto attesa. Gli statuti medievali di Pontorme risalgono al 1346 e non al 1445, data quest’ultima che tutta la storiografia sul tema, da quella più indietro nel tempo a quella più attuale, aveva identificato come data di stesura. Non è certamente roba da poco per gli storici, arrivare a dimostrare che un testo ha un secolo in più rispetto alle indicazioni di tutti quelli che finora lo avevano studiato. Un secolo. A molti non capita mai durante la loro carriera. E fra le ricerche confutate dalla nuova pubblicazione ci sono  lavori di grande pregio di autori importanti, ma tant’é. Gli autori, Vanna Arrighi, Paolo Santini e Marco Frati, nel silenzio delle loro lunghe ricerche sono riusciti a dimostrare questa straordinaria scoperta per l’intero territorio empolese ma non solo, e la presenteranno al pubblico il 21 febbraio a Pontorme, svelando le prove a corredo dell’indagine illustrate nel volume appena dato alle stampe e in procinto di essere distribuito. Bocche cucite intanto sulle grandi novità che saranno presentate in quella sede. Il volume presenta l’edizione dello statuto di Pontorme del 1346, con tre saggi introduttivi, a cura appunto di Vanna Arrighi, Paolo Santini e Marco Frati, corredata della trascrizione del testo dal latino – con relativi regesti  in italiano - realizzata ad opera di Paolo Santini e Marco Frati. Questo testo, nel pur ampio e variegato panorama degli statuti delle comunità soggette a Firenze, presenta diverse peculiarità, che ne fanno, se non un unicum, almeno un documento estremamente interessante: la data molto precoce, le circostanze dell’approvazione da parte dei competenti organi fiorentini, la storia medievale del codice che contiene il testo. Di questi e di altri elementi parla il saggio di Vanna Arrighi, mentre quello di Paolo Santini ricostruisce il complesso quadro politico-istituzionale di cui il comune di Pontorme fece parte, fino alla riforma comunitativa di Pietro Leopoldo, che ne determinò la soppressione nel 1774. Il saggio di Marco Frati riflette invece sul territorio di Pontorme dal punto di vista del popolamento, della viabilità, delle emergenze architettoniche e dei lavori pubblici. Il volume, voluto e progettato dall’associazione Amici dell’Archivio storico di Empoli,  finanziato dal comune di Empoli, dalla Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di San Miniato e stampato da Pacini editore, sarà presentato dal professor Francesco Salvestrini dell’Università di Firenze venerdì 21 febbraio alle 17,30 nel magnifico scenario della chiesa di San Michele a Pontorme. La serata si annuncia di quelle che non si dimenticano facilmente.

This paper explores the personal collection of the Florentine painter Bernardino Poccetti (1548-1612). An unpublished inventory compiled prior to his death not only provides precious insights into his workshop practice but also allows for the identification of important paintings by Bronzino, Pontormo,  Andrea del Sarto and Tintoretto.

Dans la Pala Pucci (1518), Jacopo Pontormo fait un usage singulier de la référence au Laocoon. En effet, il attribue non seulement plusieurs fois le visage du prêtre troyen à différents saints, mais opère également, sous l’influence de Raphaël, une subversion de la charge émotionnelle, transformant l’expression tragique en un sourire. L’article démontre que loin d’être gratuite la citation est porteuse de sens. Dans les deux cas l’antique est envisagée comme pré-figure annonçant le sacrifice du Christ. Toutefois, la formule oxymorique du visage du Laocoon/souriant, attribuée à Jésus, christianise la figure païenne. Le sourire de l’Enfant signifie son acceptation du plan incarnationnel divin et devient promesse de Résurrection. La pala devient ainsi un véritable parcours spirituel qui passe par la reconnaissance des formes. Une échelle céleste ouvrant la voie vers Dieu.

Piccola ma intensa è la mostra allestita a Pontorme (vicino a Empoli, in provincia di Firenze) per celebrare l’artista che vi ebbe i natali: Jacopo Carucci, detto il Pontormo, viene ricordato a 520 anni dalla nascita con la mostra Pontormo e il suo seguito nelle terre d’Empoli, un’anticipazione della grande esposizione che si terrà in primavera presso il fiorentino Palazzo Strozzi e che decreterà il 2014 come anno pontormesco.
