Mitraísmo

L’icona principale dei misteri di Mithra raffigura il dio nell’istante in cui, dopo avere cavalcato e fiaccato il toro, gli affonda il pugnale nella gola. Il sangue che sgorga dalla ferita alimenta il mondo e salva gli uomini.
Dopo duemila anni di cristianesimo, la fede in un dio guerriero può apparire crudele e barbarica, eppure le due religioni avverse condividevano credenze comuni su vari aspetti: la nascita del dio in una grotta il 25 dicembre; la sua funzione di Salvatore; il giudizio finale con cui dividerà i malvagi dai giusti; il rito del banchetto comune dei devoti con pane segnato dalla croce e con vino.

Ma rispetto al cristianesimo nel mitraismo non c’è ombra del sentimento della colpa. L’eroe divino non è un dio che muore. La salvezza che da lui promana verso gli uomini non dipende dalla sua morte, ma dal fatto che egli dà la morte.

Dalla vittima che lui sacrifica scaturisce la vita e la salute. Il saggio esamina l’identità di questa vittima per decifrare perché dal suo sangue può nascere la vita.

The sacrifice of the sacred bull/calf deep in the underground cave, underlines the dualistic nature of the Mitraic Cult. The sacred bull was in its true nature a fetishist manifestation - phallus, of a multitude-form creator solar deity, a symbol of the sky and heavens, which through this ritual sacrifice ejaculates its seeds (blood) of life. While the underground cave , where Mitra was born from a stone, symbolized the interior (uterus) of the mother earth, which is about to be fertilized by the blood/seed of the celestial bull deep inside her.  The death was the symbolic rebirth in the same time, as the sexual culmination is often compared with the “small death.”
This symbolic sexual “penetration” of the celestial bull/phallus deep into the underground womb of the mother earth, can be deduced also from the unmistakably Phallus-like shape of the Mitraeums, the cave-like shrines of Mitra, where at the end of each the altar represented the ‘glans’ of these penis-shaped structures, and where the “celestial sperm” was spilled in the form of the bull’s blood. Moreover, in the famous Ostia’ Mitraeum in Italy, where was performed the symbolic “ejaculation” of the sacrificial seed  (i.e. bull’s blood and most probably the real ejaculation of the adepts and Paters, which was mixed with the “celestial seed” of the slain bull), there’s a very intuitive and proper inscription in Latin: “FELICISSIMUS EXVOTO” - ‘a maximum felicity from a vow’, with an urn-vessel (a mosaic image on the floor) for the ejection of the spilled blood/semen.
Mitraism was actually the most Chauvinistic and primitive predecessor of the 10th century dualistic movements, Bogomilism/Catharism and later Protestantism...

El Mesías-Cristo:
Un mito ancestral y arcaico reformulado por las sectas del mesianismo apocalíptico judío y transformado por la Iglesia del siglo segundo

Es decir, un cristianismo judío sin historia evangélica ni «punto cero».

Eliseo Ferrer propone en Sacrificio y drama del rey sagrado (Genealogía, antropología e historia del mito de Cristo) una visión alternativa y crítica de los fundamentos del cristianismo. Pues, situado dentro del contexto del mesianismo judío, el cristianismo de los «orígenes» fue un fenómeno enormemente complejo que nada tuvo que ver con las simplificaciones de los catecismos de la Iglesia, ni tampoco con las ficciones que más tarde construyeron los reformadores luteranos a través de su ucronía de pureza (Urgemeinde).

Como afirma su autor, para entender el fenómeno en su verdadera dimensión hemos de saber, en primer lugar, qué fueron el protognosticismo y el gnosticismo cristiano, y entender también qué papel desempeñaron la literatura sapiencial judía, la literatura intertestamentaria y la literatura apocalíptica entre ciertas sectas mesiánicas judías del periodo final del Segundo Templo. Y, además de todo ello, y muy importante, hay que valorar en su justo término los hechos acaecidos el año setenta de nuestra era con la destrucción del Templo de Jerusalén en la primera guerra judía contra Roma; además de conocer las técnicas exegéticas y la particular hermenéutica (midrash, derásh, pésher, etc.) que utilizaron en la interpretación de las Escrituras los diferentes judaísmos prerrabínicos, y a través de cuyos métodos fueron redactados los primeros textos de los evangelios.

As the deity associated with the sun’s glow or sun light, opposed to that of the astral body, Miϑra is the god of the liminal time, viz. the points of contact between day and night (that is, sunrise and sunset) and metonymically between summer and winter (that is, the equinoxes). Besides the well-known transformation of the Avestan liturgical calendar caused by the adoption of the Egyptian solar calendar, scholars have in recent years drawn attention to a further transformation in the liturgical calendar (for the first time H. Humbach in 2010): the expansion of the ritual divisions of the day from three to five. Later, J. Kellens pointed out the important role of Miϑra in introducing the division of the day starting with sunrise. In this paper, I will argue that Miϑra is not only associated with sunrise, but also with sunset, introducing Miϑra as the protagonist in the process that eventually led to the transformation of the ritual parts of the day. Moreover, I will show that the adoption of the solar calendar caused the transformation. Both processes are linked through a series of analogies between the day and the year around the axis defined by Miϑra: sunrise and sunset on the one hand and the two equinoxes on the other. I will also discuss Miϑra’s connection with both equinoxes. The autumn equinox is celebrated at the festival of Mihragān and corresponds to the Avestan festival paitiš.hahaiia-. With the vernal equinox begins the new ritual year with a series of celebrations that extend over the first week of the year. These celebrations are dedicated to the Aməṣ̌a Spəṇta, and in them the liturgical season of each asńiia- ratu- is introduced at a different day, thus connecting parts of the day with the conception of the year and even hemeronyms of the first week. In this context, I will also show that the standard Yasna, the Yasna with the dedicatory of Nōg Nāwar, in which Miϑra takes a prominent position, is originally the Yasna for the celebration of the opening of the new ritual year at the first sunrise after the vernal equinox. Other important actors of the reform are the Waters and the Frauuaṣ̌is in whose honour the other great seasonal festivals are celebrated and to which the longest Yašts are dedicated. Most likely, the reform of the liturgical calendar took place in Western Iran in Achaemenid times, perhaps concurrently with other significant changes such as the introduction of a permanent fire and the creation of a supra-national authority.

The aim of the article is to cast a light on the nature of the cult of Mithras in Central Italy, focusing on the administrative division of Roman Etruria. Indeed, the Regio VII has emerged as a privileged territory to explore different aspects of the cult, due to the great variety of its artefacts.
Hence, a model of diffusion of the Mithraic marble religious artifacts across the region and through the Roman main viability is presented, highlighting its dependence on public officials, responsible for both spreading government-endorsed iconographies and managing the Imperial marble industry.
Consequently, the active role played by the Imperial administration in promoting the Mithras worship in Etruria is discussed, as well as the cult diffusion among the lower classes and (by the Middle/Late Empire) the aristocratic élites.
The last phases of the cult within the region are also explored, showing how the Mithraic spelaea were dismissed according to a variety of different modalities during the first decades of the 5th century AD, ranging from violent destruction to pacific abandonment of their structures.

"Neste trabalho propus-me a elaborar uma comparação entre duas religiões mistéricas: Cristianismo e Mitraísmo, na Roma antiga, entre os séculos I a IV.
Foi assim possível ver os pontos em que se assemelhavam e aqueles em que divergiam conforme as suas raízes e povos com quem contactaram. É também possível ver que a forma como foram divulgadas e aceites por determinados grupos foi de extrema importância na adopção da sua forma final. No caso do Cristianismo, este foi levado por Paulo até aos povos pagãos da bacia do Mediterrâneo que ajudaram a moldá-lo com algumas das suas crenças e celebrações.
Já o Mitraísmo, tendo sido adoptado principalmente por soldados leva a que este adoptasse uma forma mais restrita e secreta já que as mulheres não podiam fazer parte do culto.
É possível ver uma evolução nestas duas crenças conforme muda o poder dentro do Império e as recorrentes perseguições ajudam a que o Cristianismo acabe por se tornar mais forte até ao momento em que este passa a ser visto como uma forma de unir todo o Império.
Com a queda do paganismo, o seu concorrente torna-se na religião oficial que acaba por se consolidar e espalhar mesmo após a queda do Império tornando-se assim uma das grandes religiões do mundo.

Thie contribution deals with Rome’s urban landscape as it is presented within the Late Antique Actus of St. Sylvester, a legend concerning Christianity’s triumph in the metropolis. In the text, a number of locations can be recognized, presenting the cityscape as structured on a topographical dichotomy between the Lateran and the Capitoline Hill, respectively recontextualized as quintessential pivots of Polytheism and Christianity.
Reprising an old theory formulated in the ’30s, the present study focuses on some references that the Actus makes to specific Pre-Christian cults when describing the liar of a dragon on the Capitolium, highlighting how they can be read as explicit references to the Mithras worship.
The archaeological record is accordingly explored, highlighting the rooting of such cult on the hill, confirmed by several dedicatory inscriptions and by one of the largest known Mithraic reliefs.
Ultimately, the article argues that the practice of the Mithras cult on the Capitoline Hill could have enjoyed such high prestige among the Late Antique upper classes to foster, at least during the 6th century, the perception of the local spelaea as particularly well-fitting settings for the abode of a monster symbolizing the Early Medieval concept of “Paganism” as a whole.

ABSTRACT / La creencia persa en los salvadores venidos del cielo evolucionó de manera importante tras la desaparición de la figura de profeta reformador. Se esperaba, de acuerdo a la tradición legendaria, que Zoroastro retornase a la tierra, si no personalmente, sí al menos bajo la forma de alguno de sus tres hijos (los dos primeros como profetas anunciadores del tercero y definitivo salvador, Saoshyant), que vendrían a salvar el mundo y a concluir la obra de la «historia sagrada» hasta su consumación final. Éstos nacerían a intervalos de mil años del propio semen del profeta, milagrosamente conservado en el lago Kansaoya, y de tres vírgenes, que debían concebir al salvador al bañarse en dicho lago; con lo que se pondría en marcha el último acto de la existencia temporal del mundo y se daría paso a la frashokereti (frašō.kərəti), transfiguración o renovación escatológica final. Esto ocurriría en los tres últimos milenios de un periodo de doce mil años, y el último de estos enviados, Astvatereta (Astvaṱ.ǝrǝta), o «el que encarna la justicia», sería el verdadero protagonista del fin: el Saoshyant por antonomasia y definitivo salvador.

Los misterios de Mithras es un título de importancia capital dentro del conjunto de los trabajos sobre el dios oriental. En el texto, se recogen las conclusiones alcanzadas tras la compilación de los Textes et Monuments figurés relatifs aux Mystères de Mithra (1894-1899), primer gran corpus de materiales textuales, epigráficos, numismáticos y arqueológicos relacionados con el culto mithraico. Signifer viene a cubrir con esta edición del clásico de Cumont un vacío en la bibliografía especializada en el tema. Aunque existen traducciones de otras de las grandes obras del belga centradas en los cultos orientales o en el propio dios, hasta la fecha no era posible encontrar una versión en castellano de Los misterios de Mithras.

Il monumento noto come Mitreo di Sutri, o anche nella sua attuale dedicazione Santa Maria del Parto (o la Madonna del Parto), in precedenza nota anche come San Michele Arcangelo (precedente dedicazione secondo Apollonj Ghetti), Chiesa del Colosseo (Bondi) o Madonna del Colosseo (Gentili) e La Madonna della Grotta (Marocco) è forse la chiesa rupestre più nota del Lazio, almeno a giudicare dalla quantità di studi e citazioni bibliografiche esistenti, certamente assai numerosi, seppur non sempre informati ad una rigorosa metodologia
d’indagine storica. Viceversa, sono assai poche le fonti documentarie dirette su questo monumento e, ancor meno quelle iconografiche, che sono sempre di epoca moderna.
Si tratta di un affascinante e, probabilmente assai stratificato, ambiente rupestre collocato appena fuori dal borgo antico di Sutri, nella zona archeologica ai piedi del colle Savorelli all’interno dell’attuale parco archeologico dell’Antichissima città di Sutri che comprende, oltre
Villa Savorelli, anche i resti di un importante anfiteatro romano scavato nella roccia (un tempo creduto di origine etrusche è oggi databile fra gli ultimi decenni del I secolo a.C e i primi anni del I secolo d.C.) e l’attigua necropoli rupestre della via Cassia. L’attuale chiesa rupestre della Madonna del Parto è interamente scavata nel tufo e, secondo
le teorie al momento più accreditate si ipotizza che originariamente l’ambiente ipogeo, esclusa la zona absidale più recente, fosse un mitreo, ovvero un luogo dedicato intorno al I-II secolo d.C. al culto pagano del dio Mitra e successivamente cristianizzato. L’ambiguità dell’attuale nominazione (mitreo o chiesa) deriva dalle particolarissime
caratteristiche del monumento che hanno suggerito, nel tempo, diverse spiegazioni per il suo assetto originario (ora tomba o casa etrusca, ora chiesa paleocristiana, ora mitreo), tutte avvalorate da una serie di indizi in qualche modo attendibili, ma mai sottoposti a un severo esame storico-critico che ne affrontasse lo studio partendo dalla metodologia propria del restauro architettonico.
La conoscenza documentaria e iconografica delle varie fasi del monumento deve essere, infatti, sempre confortata e verificata da rilievi e indagini dirette sul corpo del monumento stesso; viceversa i vari studiosi che si sono occupati di questi luoghi, molti dei quali
assolutamente autorevoli e rigorosi nel loro specifico campo di attività, hanno perlopiù seguito di volta in volta particolari inclinazioni (proprie delle loro specifiche competenze) ricercando verifiche alle loro congetture, piuttosto che indagare il monumento con oggettivo
e scientifico spirito critico. Si auspica, pertanto, che in un prossimo futuro vi siano le risorse per indagare il monumento con le più moderne tecniche di rilievo (laser scanner, termografia, indagini soniche e
ultrasoniche, geo radar, tomografia ecc.) in modo da colmare una serie di lacune cognitive, indispensabili per avvalorare qualsiasi ipotesi sull’origine dell’ipogeo con riscontri oggettivi e, quindi, individuare le migliori modalità di conservazione.

I Carabinieri erano infatti impegnati ad individuare il luogo di provenienza del magnifico gruppo scultoreo in marmo del dio Mitra, che stava finendo nella rete del traffico internazionale di opere d'arte, e così si è scoperta l'esistenza di questo luogo di culto! un esempio eccezionale di mitreo costruito in elevato, e non di tipo ipogeo come, invece, sono la quasi totalità dei luoghi adibiti a culto di Mithra: per questo motivo si tratta di una scoperta eccezionale!

RESUMEN.- Se trata de una versión inicial, y en español, de la luego publicada en Zeitschrift für Papyrologie und Epigraphik, Bd. 38, 1980, págs. 141-145 (cf. http://www.academia.edu/1075529/Saturninus_Augusti_libertus), en la que también estudiaba la difícil ara fúnebre de la ornatrix Philtates, al parecer ella, o su ama, originaria de Augusta Taurinorum (Turín) y fallecida en Lugo. Sobre la importante inscripción del liberto imperial severiano Saturninus –en efecto el mismo de Pérgamo, como más tarde reconoció P. ABSTRACT / Los «dioses» salvadores de las religiones mistéricas, los modelos arquetípicos de los cultos secretos orientales y griegos, fueron entidades carismáticas capaces de ofrecer la salvación a los hombres en términos de inmortalidad: figuras míticas y de remoto y ancestral origen, que, a pesar de su proyección arcaica, hemos situado en el periodo neolítico que contempló el nacimiento de la agricultura: encarnaciones de los procesos y fuerzas del cosmos, de la naturaleza y de la fertilidad agrícola, imprescindibles para la supervivencia material de los pueblos primitivos. Figuras semidivinas que, junto a la Diosa Madre, fueron interpretadas, en un principio, de manera mágica y numinosa, como primitivas deidades de la vegetación; pero que, a lo largo de los siglos, fueron transformadas en entidades espirituales y redentoras que, de manera muy diferente, y por distintos caminos, llegaron primero a Grecia y luego a los dominios del mundo romano. «Un tipo de deidad, en definitiva, muy conocida: el dios que moría y resucitaba todos los años, y que había surgido como un espíritu de la vegetación. Un dios que adquiría profundo valor emotivo como prototipo divino del inexorable destino de los hombres, cuyo nacimiento y muerte constituían el rasgo destacado de los misterios».

Summary: Mithraism is considered within Oriental religions practiced in the Roman Empire as the one who most firmly held its mystical face. Oblivious to external manifestations, this religion developed its cult within Mithraea, also excluding an important sector of the Roman population: women. By analyz­ ing epigraphic texts, we find that this perception is not as monolithic as it is assumed, but the initiates themselves found mechanisms which made possible some outward projection of their beliefs and also found ways to extend their beliefs to their wives, children and other relatives.

Resumen: El mitraísmo está considerado dentro de las religiones orientales practicadas en el Imperio romano, como la que más firmemente mantuvo su rasgo mistérico. Ajeno a manifestaciones externas, desarrolló su culto dentro de los mitreos, excluyendo además a un importante sector de la población romana: las mujeres. A través de los textos epigráficos que vamos a analizar, comproba­ remos que esta percepción no es tan monolítica como se piensa, sino que los propios iniciados encontraron mecanismos con lo que hacer una cierta proyec­ción hacia afuera de sus creencias y también encontraron el medio para incluir en sus creencias a sus mujeres, hijos y demás familiares.
