La Tene culture

Cette conférence a permis de présenter le Projet Collectif de Recherche "Le Chablais au second âge du Fer : la nécropole des Léchères à Chens-sur-Léman", qui vise à étudier un ensemble funéraire de La Tène ancienne / moyenne sur la rive méridionale du lac Léman (Haute-Savoie) afin de caractériser les communautés occupant à cette époque les marges nord-orientales du territoire allobroge, par une analyse archéo-anthropologique, paléométallurgique et céramologique.

Opevnenie na vrchu Straník v Zástraní je známe už niekoľko desaťročí ako archeologická lokalita. Valové opevnenie je viditeľné i v súčasnosti. Z lokality pochádzajú zberom získané nálezy keramiky, ktoré okrem osídlenia lokality púchovskou kultúrou dokladajú i osídlenie v eneolite a vo včasnom stredoveku. Kľúčové slová: Hradisko, opevnenie, badenská kultúra, púchovská kultúra, doba slovanská Kužeľovitý kopec Straník (768,9 m n. m.; tab. I: obr. 1), v súčasnosti známy najmä ako vyhľadávaná lokalita pre paragliding a závesné lietanie sa vypína nad obcou Zástranie, približne 8 km severovýchodne od Žiliny. Dominuje južnej hranici Kysuckej vrchoviny a z jeho temena sa ponúka široký výhľad na východnú časť Žilinskej kotliny. Ako archeologická lokalita je Straník známy už niekoľko desaťročí, hoci plošný archeologický výskum tu dosiaľ neprebehol. Jeho výhodná a dominantná poloha ho predurčovali k tomu, aby sa stal mikroregionálnym centrom minimálne v jednej významnej epoche našich dejín, v dobe laténskej. Stopy osídlenia na temene vrchu sú v teréne ešte i v súčasnosti viditeľné v podobe valu obkolesujúceho rozľahlú vrcholovú plošinu Rozsah opevnenia má približne 450 x 150m, 1 čiže celá opevnená plocha dosahuje cca 6,7 ha. Na severnej a západnej strane je val viac krát prerušený, na základe čoho možno predpokladať v týchto miestach tri brány. 2 Najvýraznejšie prerušenie sa v teréne javí na západnej strane opevnenia nad pravotočivou prístupovou cestou k hradisku. V týchto miestach je viditeľný výrazný, pravidelný štvoruholníkový výbežok s kamenným základom (tab. II: obr. 5, 6), na ktorom možno predpokladať fortifikačný objekt v podobe brány, prípadne veže. Južne od tohto výbežku je na niekoľkých metroch zjavné prerušenie telesa valu kadiaľ viedol samotný vstup do opevnenia (tab. II: obr. 7). Od spomínaného výbežku sa smerom nadol západným svahom črtá v teréne ďalší val (na jednom mieste mechanicky porušený; tab. I: obr. 3), ktorého úlohou bolo naviesť prípadných útočníkov priamo pred bránu. Val má kamenito-hlinitú konštrukciu. V súčasnosti je – najmä na západnej strane – zachovaný miestami až do výšky viac ako 1,5 m (tab. II: obr. 1 – 4). Najvyšší bod temena opevneného vrchu je tvorený geologickou vrásou, pričom, ako uvádza A. Petrovský-Šichman " severná polovica tejto vrásy je umelo upravená v dlhú plošinu odlámaním skalného povrchu " 3 (tab. II: obr. 8). Datovanie hradiska spadá do neskorej doby laténskej, kedy (ako to dokladajú nálezy keramiky) opevnenie využíval ľud púchovskej kultúry. Možno predpokladať, že bol centrom hospodárskeho politického a sociálneho diania v mikroregióne,

Anlässlich des 15-jährigen Bestehens des kelten römer museums manching startete am 2. Juni 2021 das Quiz »Professor von Eulenschnurz – Jäger des verworrenen Quatsches«. Die Besucherinnen und Besucher hatten Gelgenheit, bis zum 12. September 2021 am humoristischen Suchspiel teilzunehmen. +++ Hintergrund war ein Besuch des fiktiven Professors von Eulenschnurz (Bayerische Fernuniversität Hintertupfing), der die Dauerausstellung des Manchinger Museums gehörig auf den Kopf stellte – mit wahnwitzigen Ergebnissen! Das Quiz präsentierte acht Eulenschnurzsche Theorien zu Funden der Kelten- und Römerzeit aus Manching und Oberstimm, von einer gut belegten Familienpizza bis hin zu einem abgefahrenen Muped-Lenker. Aufgabe der Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer war es, die beschriebenen Objekte im Museum zu finden und ihre tatsächlichen Funktionen zu erraten. +++ Das Suchspiel lag in Form eines liebevoll illustrierten Heftes vor und richtete sich an Menschen ab 10 Jahren. Zu gewinnen waren ökologisch und fair produzierte T-Shirts, Turnbeutel und Tragetaschen, auf denen die keltischen Achsnägel mit Raubvogelköpfen aus dem Oppidum von Manching abgebildet sind.

V roku 1871 uskutočnil Béla Majláth v jaskyni pod Mníchom, ležiacej za humnami obce Lisková, prvý speleoarcheologický výskum v uhorskej časti monarchie. Jeho výsledkom bol objav podozrivo vyzerajúcej ľudskej lebky mohutnejšieho vzhľadu, kamenné nástroje, ľudské a zvieracie kosti a údajné zuby z mamuta. Nález okamžite vyvolal obrovský záujem, pretože dovtedy sa také staré pozostatky človeka nenašli v žiadnej jaskyni v Uhorsku. Preto bol v roku 1874 poverený realizáciou revízneho výzkumu mladý geológ Lajos Lóczy, neskôr jeden z najvýznamnejších maďarských geografov a cestovateľov. Jeho závery priniesli dôležité poznatky o existencii osídlenia z viacerých pravekých aj historických fáz. Ľudské pozostatky z viac ako 48 jedincov vniesli do problematiky viac svetla. Od tejto chvíle jaskyňu prekopávali ďalší a ďalší, v snahe objaviť skryté poklady.
Publikácia podáva podrobný prehľad o dejinách výskumu tejto pozoruhodnej krasovej lokality, analýzu nálezov, písomných správ a svedectiev, aby na na konci pomohla odhaliť tajuplné rituály, ktoré sa tu počas takmer 6 000 rokov odohrávali. Početné zvyšky ludí, medené, bronzové a jantárové šperky, keramické zlomky a kamenné nástroje dotvárajú kulisu rituálov, ktoré zahŕňali aj tzv. exkarnáciu, čiže zámerné oddeľovanie svaloviny od kostí ako aj rôzne prejavy pohrebných obradov. Najintenzívnejšia etapa využívania jaskyne je spojená s ľudom lengyelskej kultúry a lievikovitých pohárov v neskorej dobe kamennej-medenej. Najmä posledne menovaná kultúra je spojená s budovaním megalitických pamiatok po celej západnej a severnej Európe. To, ako sa ide megalitizmu odrazili pri využívaní jaskýň, kto boli ľudia, ktorí v neďalekých Starohorských vrchoch ťažili meď a prečo svojich mŕtvych mohli pochovávať do skalnej hrobky sa môže čitateľ dozvedieť na konci celého príbehu. Publikácia, na ktorej pracoval tím popredných odborníkov, je písaná pútavým investigatívnym štýlom, pridržiava sa však dôsledne vedeckých faktov a dostupných prameňov. Okrem materiálovej časti sa dotýka aj rôznych legiend spojenej s touto jaskyňou aj vrchom Mních, na ktorom v praveku vznikla sústava hradísk a údajne tu mal stať aj termplársky kláštor. Kniha sa však dotýka ja mmnohých ďalších otázok liptovskej prehistórie, čím sa stáva dôležitým prameňom nielen k dejinám tohto regionu. Najstaršia kovová plastika vola so zvyškom jarma je dôležitým prameňom do problematiky vynálezu záprahu v dobe medenej, čím sa Liskovská jaskyňa zaraďuje k najdôležitejším európskym jaskynným náleziskám.

This paper examines how the Romans in the early Republic adopted Celtic panoply, in the process abandoning Greek-style hoplite equipment. The first part details the Celtic aspects of the major pieces of Rome’s new military equipment: La Tène sword, oval shield (scutum), javelin (pilum), mail armour and Montefortino helmet. The next section seeks possible military and cultural explanations for this transition, suggesting among other factors that the new kit may have been driven by increased recruitment from beyond the narrow hoplite class. The panoply eventually coalesced into a symbol of specifically Roman identity, especially as the Romans deployed distinctively equipped armies into Magna Graecia and the Hellenistic East.

У монографії розглядається широке коло питань, пов’язаних із перебуванням давніх кельтів у Карпато-Балканському регіоні та Східній Європі. Охарактеризовано вплив соціокультурних та політико-ідеологічних настанов модерної доби на формування наукових уявлень про кельтські народи. Із застосуванням методів етнології сформульовано підходи до вивчення кельтів як етнічної групи та їхніх міграцій у східному напрямку.Реконструйовано участь кельтів у процесах етнокультурної взаємодії з племенами й народами, які у давні часи населяли Південно-Східну Європу. Особливу увагу приділено питанням перебування давніх кельтів на землях сучасної України, а також імовірним контактам кельтів зі слов’янами.

Résumé
Du Rhin au Plateau lorrain, au tournant de notre ère, les auteurs latins présentent des situations et des évolutions
territoriales et ethniques complexes et souvent mal comprises et se basent sur des sources indirectes. D’après les
textes, les territoires rauraque et médiomatrique connaissent avant notre ère des bouleversements engendrés par
l’arrivée de nouvelles populations germanique et italique. Face à ces témoignages, que nous montrent les traces
archéologiques ? Confirment-elles les écrits, sont-elles muettes ou montrent-elles un scénario différent ? L’objectif
de cet article est de mettre en lumière de nouvelles découvertes et l’apport des nouvelles approches archéologiques
dans la problématique des migrations qui ont lieu au tournant de notre ère dans la grande région. Ainsi, nous proposons une présentation des données archéologiques récentes permettant d’observer l’évolution des « groupes
culturels » et/ou des territoires des Rauraques, des Triboques, des Médiomatriques et les bouleversements apportés
par l’arrivée des Romains le long du Rhin.

Rauriker, Mediomatriker, Triboker und Römer: Völkerwanderungen, Eroberungen, territoriale
Veränderungen und kulturelle Einflüsse zwischen der elsässischen Tiefebene und der lothringischen
Hochebene zwischen dem 2. Jahrhundert vor und dem 2. Jahrhundert nach Chr.

An der Wende zu unserem Zeitalter umreißen römische Autoren vom Rhein bis zum lothringischen Plateau komplexe und oft schlecht verstandene territoriale und ethnische Konstellationen und Entwicklungen und stützen sich
dabei auf indirekte Quellen. Ihre Texte besagen, dass die Territorien der Rauriker und Mediomatriker vor unserer
Zeitrechnung von Umbrüchen gekennzeichnet waren, die durch den Zuzug neuer germanischer und italischer Bevölkerungsgruppen hervorgerufen wurden. Was zeigen uns archäologische Spuren im Hinblick auf diese Aussagen?
Bestätigen sie die Schriftquellen, bleiben sie stumm, oder zeigen sie ein anderes Szenario? Das Ziel dieses Vortrags
besteht darin, neue Funde und den Beitrag neuer archäologischer Ansätze hinsichtlich der Migrationsproblematik zu
beleuchten, die am Übergang zu unserer Zeitrechnung in der Großregion stattfand. So präsentieren wir neue archäologische Daten, die es ermöglichen, die Entwicklung von "Kulturgruppen" sowie Veränderungen der Territorien der
Rauriker, Triboker und Mediomatriker zu beobachten ebenso wie die Umwälzungen, die die Ankunft der Römer
entlang des Rheins mit sich brachte.

Abstract. Maramureş Depression represents a distinct region which occupies the north- eastern parts of the Carpathian Basin (Map 1). As land, is a closed, bounded on all sides by mountains. The main access was the river Tisza and pass that it does in the west part of the region. Today we know a number of 31 Dacian period findings dated from the IInd century BC to the IIIrd century AD (Map 2). Of these, 24 (77 %) are monetary findings (isolated coins or hoards), six are cemeteries (19%) with a total of over 110 burial mounds, three are settlements (10 %), and two are Dacian fortifications (6%). Although few in number, archaeological findings provide a fairly large amount of information about the Dacian civilization. In total there were discovered a number of 20 to 23 dwellings (containing a rich inventory, especially pottery, but also tools and weapons), numerous household (barns or storage pits supplies) and one single house of worship (typical Dacian buildings with an apse). The developments of Dacians who remained outside from the Dacia Roman provinces, seems to be uniform in this reion, slightly disturbed by the Roman conquest of a large part of the territory inhabited by Dacian. Elements of climate and relief, and the existence of trade routes (river valleys and mountain passes) facilitated the predilection of certain economic activities, production and trade over long distances. Evidence of this are some roman imports goods, but especially the thousands of Roman coins found in this geographic area.

The paper deals with the basis of the Pre-Roman Iron Age chronology in Southern Scandinavia. It was established during the 1950'es as a typologically based three-period system with an almost findless middle period. While from the 1950'es and onwards new two-period systems have been established in most neighbouring regions only minor ajustments have been made to the Danish chronology system. This paper argues that a typologically based three-period system may obscure the real development and that the lack of finds in the middle period is in fact a product of this. Therefore,  it is argued that the very material originally forwarded by C. J. Becker as arguments for the tripartite system can be used as arguments for a bipartite chronology system. In this way many of the "problems" of connecting Early with Late Pre-Roman Iron Age disappears while at the same time the period gains a dynamic appearance with fundamental chances in the transition from early to late, bringing it in concordance with what we see in other parts of Northern and Northern Central Europe

The use of curved single-edged swords – μαχαιρα/machaira* (and variants thereof) – developed during the Bronze Age in southeastern Europe, with both the Iapodic and Liburian groups on the eastern Adriatic coast using variants of the machaira during this period (Batović 1983:314; Dreschler-Bižić 1983:383-384). Machaira type swords also appear in the area of the Besarabi culture in the 8 th c. BC (Guštin 1974: 78-79, 81-83; Tomedi 2002:112-113), and the use of this form of weapon can be traced on the Balkans throughout the Iron Age (Gaspari, Mlinar 2005). That the machaira was also adopted by the Balkan Celts has been confirmed by recent archaeological discoveries from sites in the western, central and eastern Balkans (Slovenia, Serbia, Bulgaria), where such weapons have been found in Celtic warrior burials. A good example is that from burial #25 at Most na Soči in Slovenia where a late La Têne cremation burial yielded the burnt remains of a warrior accompanied by a spearhead, a bronze La Têne fibula, and a curved sword of the machaira type. Both the weapons and the fibula from the burial had been ritually 'killed' (i.e. deliberately deformed) in the typical Celtic fashion. The sword from Most na Soči is a machaira of the Ljubljanica type, further examples of which have been found in this region at Šmihel, in Carniola, 2 from the Ljubljana moor, and a Celtic machaira with a decorated hilt discovered in the Ljubljanica river (loc cit).

Découvert en 1857 à l’occasion de prospections sur les rives du lac de Neuchâtel, le site de La Tène a servi, dans la recherche antiquaire du 19e siècle, à la caractérisation archéologique de la « civilisation gauloise ». Lors du Congrès international de préhistoire de Stockholm (1874), La Tène sera même choisi comme site de référence pour le second âge du Fer européen (env. 450-50 av. J.-C.) – stimulant ainsi de nouvelles opérations de fouilles, au début du 20e siècle.
Evoquant brièvement les études en cours actuellement (notamment le projet du Fonds national suisse de la recherche scientifique, 2007-2014), cet article expose l'état présent des interprétations, tout en soulignant les lacunes persistantes de nos connaissances à propos de la nature et de la fonction du site. Il analyse enfin les modalités du choix de ce gisement comme site de référence, et d’autre part le rôle historique des sites éponymes dans la construction des cadres heuristiques de la discipline archéologique.
