Resumo
Apesar de atualmente ser atribuída na Fundação Eva Klabin a Sandro Botticelli, a pintura Madona com Menino e São João Batista, possui uma autografia polêmica que também já circundou os nomes de Lorenzo di Credi e Filippino Lippi. Seu estilo predominantemente clássico traça uma forte relação com a tradição florentina do Renascimento. Apresenta uma notável qualidade pictórica, mas com as diversas restaurações e limpezas pelas quais passou, seus traços originais foram sendo encobertos, dificultando assim o seu estudo iconográfico e autográfico. A sua análise, portanto, visa prioritariamente a abordagem de uma discussão de possibilidades de autoria segundo aproximações estilísticas, relevando os nomes já sugeridos.

Abstract:
Although it is currently attributed by Eva Klabin Foundation to Sandro Botticelli, the painting entitled Madonna with Child and Saint John the Baptist, has a controversial autography; a controversy similar to those ones once involving the names of Lorenzo Di Credi and Filippino Lippi. The predominantly classical style of the painting strongly indicates a relationship with the Florentine tradition of the Renaissance. The work is of remarkable pictorial quality, but having undergone many restorations and cleaning processes, its original lines were gradually covered, making it difficult to study its iconography and autography. Its analysis, therefore, aims primarily at discussing the possibilities of authorship based on stylistic similarities, with special emphasis on the names already suggested.

Proofs: About two decades before Sandro Botticelli (ca. 1445-1510) made his celebrated drawings of the Divine Comedy, he already showed his pictorial intelligence in an illustration of Petrarch's Triumph of Love. This little-known pen-and-ink drawing, in a manuscript of Petrarch's Canzoniere and Triumphs , was first published in 1984 by Annarosa Garzelli, who attributed it to Botticelli's workshop, but the characteristic style, high quality, and original interpretation all indicate that it was made by the master himself in the early 1470s.

На примере отдельных памятников рассмотрены специфические формы цитирования античного образца, прежде всего, использование детали all’antica в живописи Андреа Мантеньи и Филиппино Липпи. Внешне документальный характер классических деталей у Мантеньи противостоит фантастическим образам, конструируемым Липпи. This article takes the two exhibitions dedicated to the Florentine Renaissance painter Piero di Cosimo as well as their respective catalogues as a point of departure for a wider discussion of the questions they inspired. It focuses on five interrelated aspects: Piero’s relationship with Filippino Lippi; the impact of Netherlandish art on his style; his altarpieces and issues of chronology and his responses to the art of his day and his patronage networks.

The first part of this article presents technical information clarifying the original function of the scenes known as the Stories of Esther by Jacopo del Sellaio (Florence, ca. 1441/1442 – Florence, 1493). The five fragments, now divided between Florence, Paris and Budapest, have long been recognised as belonging to the same ensemble, but there has been no consensus among scholars about their original arrangement and physical setting. The new technical results published here prove that all five paintings are fragments of two front panels from a pair of “cassoni” (wedding chests), rather than being parts of a frieze, a lettuccio (daybed) or a spalliera (painted backboard or wainscoting), as most researchers in the last thirty years have suggested.
The reconstruction of the two wedding chests also affects how the paintings are interpreted, for the fact that they once decorated two separate items of furniture that could be easily compared with each other accentuates the didactic message of the depictions. Iconographical analysis in the second part of the article suggests that this pair of wedding chests exploits the interpretative possibilities of the Old Testament story to present the bride with both a positive and a negative model of wifely conduct.
At present, the Florence–Paris–Budapest wedding chests seem unique in that the space allotted by the commissioner to Vashti’s story is equal to that given to Esther’s, and for this reason it would be more appropriate to call their subject the Stories of Vashti and Esther.

This lecture explores how veils figure both in the content and in the staging of art between the early fourteenth century and the mid-sixteenth century.  Special reference is made to paintings in the National Gallery of Scotland by Bernardo Daddi, Lorenzo Monaco, Filippino Lippi, Raphael and Titian.

Le rivoluzionarie composizioni di Botticelli e Filippino per i dipinti da cassone e da spalliera. Jonathan K. Nelson A metà degli anni Settanta dal Quattrocento Sandro Botticelli e Filippino Lippi rivoluzionarono i dipinti narrativi d'ambito domestico. Una fondamentale trasformazione, finora passata inosservata, è riscontrabile nelle tavole a sviluppo orizzontale che ornavano le camere da letto toscane del XV secolo. Questo insieme di opere si divide in due categorie 1. Specialmente prima della metà degli anni Settanta del Quattrocento i dipinti di questo tipo erano collocati sul lato frontale di grandi cassapanche lignee, denominate cassoni o forzieri nei documenti rinascimentali, le quali a volte presentavano tavole dipinte di forma tendente al quadrato sui lati corti. A cominciare dall'ultimo quarto del Quattrocento si assiste alla diffusione di un nuovo genere, quando molti dipinti a sviluppo orizzontale cominciarono ad essere incastonati nelle spalliere. Quest'ultimo termine si riferisce ai pannelli lignei che rivestivano la parete al di sopra di un cassone e, più in generale, ai rivestimenti lignei, in stoffa o in cuoio che ricoprivano le pareti circa fino all'altezza della spalla. Nell'unico libro tutto dedicato ai dipinti da spalliera, Anne Barriault faceva una distinzione chiara e convincente tra due tipi di "convenzioni visive e modalità narrative" 2. La studiosa affermava che ai due tipi corrispondono due generi diversi, ossia dipinti da cassone e dipinti da spalliera. Tuttavia tale distinzione appare descrivere in modo più calzante il cambiamento riscontrabile nei dipinti eseguiti prima e dopo la rivoluzione avviata da Botticelli. Subito dopo che Botticelli e i suoi assistenti, in primo luogo Filippino Lippi, ebbero realizzato le tavole con le Storie di Ester per due grandi cassoni (cat. x), nei dipinti con scene narrative destinati all'ambiente domestico si osserva un cambiamento significativo nella rappresentazione dello spazio. Dopo aver analizzato la trasformazione avvenuta in tale ambito, il presente saggio esaminerà come Botticelli avesse adattato le proprie opere in base a una collocazione prestabilita. Vedremo come, diversamente da quanto si crede comunemente, egli non si aspettava che tutte le tavole da spalliera venissero collocate ad altezza d'occhio. L’articolo indaga le vicende che interessarono il polittico ordinato a Pietro Perugino per la cappella di San Michele alla Certosa di Pavia. Ci si è soffermati sulle tempistiche della sua messa in opera, a nostro avviso dilazionata nel tempo, e sulla struttura che avrebbe dovuto avere (la carpenteria originale è andata perduta) in relazione al polittico di Macrino d’Alba sul lato opposto della navata e alla pala dell’altar maggiore, commissionata a Filippino Lippi ma mai portata a termine. Le vicende sono ripercorse riservando particolare attenzione al maestro di legname coinvolto nella commissione, Jacopo d’Antonio di Santa Maria in Campo a Firenze, e proponendo uno studio comparativo sulle strutture dei polittici elaborate in Italia settentrionale nella seconda metà del XV secolo. Alcune considerazioni vengono riservate anche alla figura di Ludovico il Moro quale mecenate.

New identifications of prominent but overlooked black figures in two major works by Filippino Lippi enrich our understanding of how Africans were seen in late Quattrocento Florence. The African in the Adoration of the Magi, neither king nor attendant, represents the first gentiles who accepted Christ, as discussed in St Augustine’s Epiphany sermons. The black man in the Miracle of St Philip fresco, in the Strozzi Chapel of Santa Maria Novella, represents (or alludes to) the Ethiopian eunuch baptised by St Philip. These and other Florentine paintings from the 1490s, by various artists, shows black Africans as recent or future Christian converts. This hitherto unnoticed phenomenon reflects an increased awareness of Ethiopian Christians, who visited Italy repeatedly in the Quattrocento. Many Italians saw these African coreligionists as different from themselves: both insiders and outsiders. Filippino used various visual strategies to express both inclusion and alterity. Specifically, he depicts both black figures on the margins, both literally and symbolically: they stand at the edge of the miracle scenes.

Art-historical partners Joseph Archer Crowe (1851) and Giovanni Battista Cavalcaselle (1865) made individual surveys in Denmark.

This paper speculates on their interactions with Danish expert Niels Lautitz Andreas Høyen (1798-1870). It focuses on Cavalcaselle’s Danish sketches (Marciana, Venice). Moreover, it offers new perspectives on Gustav Friedrich Waagen’s stay in Copenhagen (1868).

Furthermore, it expounds on the fortuna and conservation history of the "Man of Sorrow" by Andrea Mantegna, the "Portrait of Lorenzo Cybo" by Parmigianino, an altarpiece by Filippino Lippi, the  alleged "Portrait of Antonio Galli" assigned to Titian or Federico Barocci and two male portraits assigend to Hans Memling and Andrea Del Sarto. Furthermore, it discusses the attribution of some other – mostly Valenti Gonzaga – paintings now in the Statens Museum for Kunst, as a copy from Raphael once assigned to the Sassoferrato or an altarpiece attributed to Marco Vecellio's circle.

In addition, this paper investigates the 19th-century criticism of draperies by Mantegna and Leonardo not only in relation to Giovanni Bellini's or Hubert and Jan van Eyck's oeuvre.

Finally, it hypothesyses the identification of a "Portrait of Thomas Gresham" assigned to the so-called 'Master of the 1540s'.

Nel 1488 Filippino Lippi giunse a Roma per lavorare a quella che si sarebbe rivelata la commissione più importante della sua carriera: la decorazione della cappella del cardinale Oliviero Carafa nella chiesa di Santa Maria sopra Minerva 1. Uno degli aspetti più significativi di questo ciclo è l'impostazione unitaria dello spazio della cappella, concepita da Filippino in modo da armonizzare perfettamente non solo gli affreschi della volta con quelli delle pareti laterali ma anche l'architettura illusionistica e quella reale 2. L'approccio unitario tenuto dal pittore sia nella cappella Carafa, completata nel 1493, sia nella cappella Strozzi a Firenze, portata a termine dieci anni dopo, successivamente avrebbe costituito un modello fondamentale per la Stanza della Segnatura e per la volta della cappella Sistina. Nell'evoluzione artistica di Filippino la cappella Carafa rappresenta una svolta decisiva. I principali affre-schi superstiti della cappella-l'Annunciazione, l'Assunzione della Vergine, il Trionfo di san Tommaso e il Miracolo del Crocifisso-mo-strano tre caratteristiche altamente significative, raramente, per non dire mai, presenti nei precedenti dipinti di Filippino ma mol-to frequenti nelle sue opere successive. Anzitutto lo studio delle statue e degli edifici antichi ispirò al pittore la nuova monumen-talità di numerose figure e dello scenario architettonico in cui esse sono collocate; inoltre, in molti dettagli, in particolare nell'intelaiatura architettonica, abbondano i riferimenti diretti a monumenti antichi 3. Giorgio Vasari arrivò addirittura ad afferma-re, esagerando, che Filippino, dopo il soggiorno romano, fu il pri-mo a introdurre a Firenze le decorazioni "all'antica". In secondo luogo, nelle opere eseguite da Filippino dopo il suo arrivo a Roma i volti e, più in generale, le pose delle figure sono caratterizzati da un senso del movimento ed emozione, se non di pathos, molto più accentuato; le figure si voltano, corrono, gesticolano come non si era mai visto prima, mentre le vesti fluttuano al vento. Infine, la cappella Carafa e molte opere successive risultano assai più ornate dei precedenti dipinti di Filippino; vi si notano, per esempio, una gamma assai più ampia di tipologie somatiche e di pose, e una maggior ricchezza e profondità nei panneggi. La pre-senza di elementi all'antica, di emozioni espresse in senso teatra-le e di sentimento, la monumentalità e lo stile estremamente ornato delle opere di Filippino indicano come, a Roma, l'artista si fosse "reinventato". La decorazione della cappella costituisce uno spartiacque per quasi tutti i suoi dipinti eseguiti precedente-mente o successivamente. La cappella del potente prelato napo-letano ci fornisce, inoltre, un raro esempio di rapporto documen-tato tra Filippino e un suo committente. Nella maggior parte dei casi, infatti, mancano prove sicure che attestino chi commissionò i suoi lavori più importanti (come per la cappella Brancacci), o chi li fece portare a compimento (come nel caso della cappella Strozzi). Per quanto riguarda la Carafa, invece, possediamo una gamma insolitamente ampia di testimonianze sia visive (gli affre-schi e ventisette disegni ad essi correlati), sia scritte (lettere e fon-ti), che ci consentono di ricostruire una serie di decisioni chiave prese dal cardinale (o da chi per lui). Oliviero Carafa collezionava epigrafi antiche e libri moderni, e sosteneva attivamente l'opera di molti artisti e umanisti; a quanto pare fu lui a stabilire l'incon-sueto e ambizioso programma pittorico della cappella, anche se possiamo ipotizzare che avesse consultato uno studioso della sua cerchia per le scene in cui compare san Tommaso, soprattutto considerando che il cardinale, tra l'altro sempre molto indaffara-to, non era un domenicano. Carafa, dunque, potrebbe aver inca-ricato degli intermediari di collaborare con il pittore. Di sicuro qualcuno consigliò a Filippino di accorpare due episodi nel Miracolo di san Tommaso, suggerì all'artista le numerose iscrizioni latine nel Trionfo e gli indicò quali eretici raffigurare nella stessa scena. Per il Trionfo-caso unico tra le opere di Filippino pervenu-teci-possediamo un disegno di presentazione finito, che possia-mo confrontare con il dipinto realizzato. Il raffronto costituisce una solida base da cui partire per formulare ipotesi sugli interessi iconografici e sulle preferenze stilistiche del cardinale 4. Nel corso della sua carriera Filippino diede prova di una sensibilità non co-mune nel comprendere le specifiche esigenze di ciascun commit-tente, cercando sempre le soluzioni più appropriate e adottando un'ampia gamma stilistica. Secondo un'analogia proposta dall'ar-chitetto Filarete, contemporaneo di Filippino, il ruolo del com-mittente era quello di "generare" l'idea originaria di un edificio; poi l'architetto, come una madre, sviluppava il seme per sette-nove mesi di gestazione fino al parto. In questo periodo l'archi-tetto-madre doveva "fantasticare e pensare", allo scopo di pro-durre diversi disegni per il progetto 5. Prima di "partorire" molte delle sue opere, Filippino ebbe modo di intrattenere rapporti stretti con i propri committenti e sicuramente così fece anche a Roma. Nell'unica lettera superstite del pittore, inviata a Filippo Strozzi nel 1489, Filippino scrisse a proposito di Carafa: "L'opera mia gli sodisfa […]. Fassi ora un ornamento per l'altare di marmo […]. La chappella non potrebbe essere più ornata in terra di pavi-mento porfido e serpentino, tutto sottilissimamente fatto, un La cappella Carafa: un nuovo linguaggio figurativo per la Roma del Rinascimento

Il saggio analizza -- per la prima volta in modo sistematico -- l'iconografia mariana nell'opera di Piero di Cosimo. Questo artista, già celebre per le sue originalissime invenzioni rispetto ai temi profani, risulta essersi distinto anche nel modo di interpretare la figura della Vergine Maria, per la quale Piero scelse, con notevole coerenza in tutta la sua carriera, fisionomie e tipi di abbigliamento eccezionalmente modesti rispetto alle raffigurazioni contemporanee (Botticelli, Filippino ecc.). Nel saggio si propone di leggere queste scelte alla luce della personalità di Piero, così come essa emerge dalla biografia vasariana: un uomo senza dubbio solitario e poco convenzionale, eppure profondamente devoto. Nel saggio si sostiene che tale devozione seppe anche tradursi per l'artista in una profonda comprensione delle immagini sacre che gli venivano commissionate. Una comprensione che permise a Piero di Cosimo di inventare soggetti nuovi in quanto sorprendentemente al passo col dibattito teologico contemporaneo: è questo il caso dell'originalissima pala, oggi nota come '"Incarnazione e Santi" (Firenze, Uffizi), eseguita da Piero per la Santissima Annunziata di Firenze verso il 1500.

In Italian art of the fifteenth century, novelties in painting and architecture appear to have mutually supported each other in a remarkable way. Even before Renaissance architecture dominated the building practice along a broad front, its pictorial representation served to instruct and disseminate the new ‘classical’ art of construction. At the same time, the reference to the canonized architectonic idiom of form from antiquity also promoted the establishment of linear perspective in painting. The efficiency and efficacy of perspectival representation could be demonstrated especially impressively by the example of clearly subdivided constructions. Without rational architectonic structures, the persuasive conquest in the Quattrocento of visual spaces would have scarcely been conceivable. Renaissance perspective hence found its congenial object in Renaissance architecture.

The eminent importance attached to architectural representation and its innovations during the early Renaissance could not be without its consequences in the way images were understood. Because, in principle, every picture is situated within real architectonic surroundings and must respond to this context, special—if not singular—status must be attached to the pictorial representation of architecture. In Italian painting of the Quattrocento, this special status of architectural representation had to be fundamentally renegotiated because a building and its structural elements simultaneously acted as the guiding pictorial motifs contributing toward establishing the way linear perspective represented, and hence had a share in, the development of a new conception of pictures. Consequently, it was a matter of determining the relation between the pictorially represented architecture and the image’s real architectonic surroundings.

These ‘aesthetic’ implications of architectural representation in the early Renaissance are at the focus of the study “Architectures of Vision. Buildings in Quattrocento Painting.” The point of interest is less the history of motifs or the share that pictures had in the history of architecture, therefore their influence on the theory and practice of architecture of the fifteenth century. The question to be raised is rather: What understanding of images could be formed and articulated in a pertinent depiction of architecture? What conception of the conditions, possibilities, and limits of visual representation is articulated in the “architectures of vision” which were to become so characteristic of Quattrocento painting?

The analysis broaches the lead issue of the conception of images during the early Renaissance in a series of specifically chosen typologically intercoordinated case studies that examine more closely the usage of architectural representation and its relation to each of the concrete architectonic surroundings. Analyses of frescoes and panel paintings, works in sacred as well as profane contexts, individual pictures as well as groups, show that architectural representation by no means exclusively served to make visual representation unambiguous and ‘transparent’. The analyses of these works concentrate wholly in this sense on aspects that have been marginalized in the theory of Renaissance art and—as a consequence—also in art historical research.

The analyses reveal that representation of architecture mostly has the dual function of not only creating an illusionistic spatial depth, as a ‘stage’ of pictorial representation, but also, at the same time, structuring the image plane in such a way that the illusion of space is partially retracted again. In many cases it is deployed to raise irritating doubts about the boundaries between architectural representation in a picture, the architectonically designed framings of the image, and the architectonic instrumentation of real space. Subtle infractions of the rules and leaps in architectonic logic also add special potential to the pictorial representation. Not least of all, pictures of the Quattrocento use architectonic elements to effectuate a mise en abyme in the image, by embedding an element, e.g., an architectonic framework, within the pictorial representation that reflects the basic structure of the entire image. Representations of architecture in pictures of the Quattrocento thus prove to be productive, variously deployable visual operators. In many cases their primary service is not elucidation but exploration of the character of reality of what is being displayed in the picture. Thus the representation of architecture often stimulates protracted observation and reflection. Only by this means does painting do justice to the special challenge inherent in the subject matter which in the fifteenth century is mostly religious: Biblical events or saints can be presented without committing them to a presence in the here and now.

Close readings of three central texts of the Quattrocento precede the case studies, in order to be able to profile the variety of ways in which architectural representation is used in painting, as an independent contribution toward contemporary discourses on images from the Quattrocento. The report that Antonio di Tuccio Manetti gave of Filippo Brunelleschi’s first demonstrations of perspective; Leon Battista Alberti’s comparison between a picture and a window; and the consideration of images portrayed by Nicolaus Cusanus at the beginning of his text De visione Dei ought to reveal essential potentials as well as problems with representing architecture.

Case studies on selected pictures of the Quattrocento build upon the considerations that were developed in the wake of Brunelleschi, Alberti, and Cusanus. Exemplary works are examined in nine chapters for how they define the relation between the pictorially represented architecture and the real building contexts of the images. The selection of analyzed images encompass well-known ‘icons’ of painting of the early Renaissance, such as Masaccio’s Trinity, the sketch books of Jacopo Bellini, Giovanni Bellini’s Pala di Pesaro, Cosmè Tura’s Roverella altar, and the Berlin ‘ideal city’ panel. In addition, there are paintings by Domenico Veneziano and Piero della Francesca, as well as frescoes by Andrea Mantegna, Domenico Ghirlandaio, and Filippino Lippi. Less well-known works are also taken into account, such as by Giovanni Battista Cima da Conegliano and Bartolomeo Montagna, which in light of the examined question prove to be surprisingly innovative and complex. These case studies are designed to be readable also as independent contributions to the analysis and interpretation of relevant artwork. In all these cases, an analysis of the pictorial architectures open up a new avenue toward interpreting the images involved.

The study’s readings and exemplary case studies offer fundamental critique of the comparison, still topical today, made between a Renaissance picture and a view from a window. In 1435 Alberti parenthetically compared the perspectivally designed picture with a finestra aperta—an analogy that implicitly suggests a clear differentiation between image and surroundings, namely between the image space and real space. Although Alberti assigns to architecture the function of offering to pictorial representation a clear and unambiguous structure, analyses of the exemplary pictures draw attention to other, partly contrary effects. The purposeful use of complex architectural depictions frequently allows contradictions to be experienced and stimulates irresolvable processes of perception. Differentiations between various levels of reality are repeatedly subjected to revision throughout the observation, so none of these differentiations can become permanently and bindingly fixed.

Hence, as the object of visual representation, not only does architecture open up and structure illusionary spaces, but it also simultaneously draws these window views into question by letting the flatness of the image become conspicuous or by challenging the picture’s relation to its frame and surroundings. These ambivalent visual phenomena have the consequence that the viewer cannot set the representation in the picture unquestioningly into a presence in the here and now. The complex, persisting processes of perception in which the viewing becomes entangled in the ambiguities rather let him or her experience another time, the temporality of actually viewing the picture. A closing outlook on the study therefore takes these observations about the representation of architecture during the Quattrocento as an opportunity to present what profit might be gained by a systematic analysis of the temporality of an image’s reception aesthetics. The closing chapter sketches, on one hand, the outlines of this approach toward picture analysis, which specifically pursues the question of how pictures influence the temporal extension of the perceptual process and arouse the recipient’s awareness that the picture is not fully accessible to him or her in a single instant. On the other hand, the closing chapter pleads that a precise analysis of the temporality of viewing pictures will permit a differentiated response to questions regarding the much-discussed ‘power’ of images: The “architectures of vision” in the Quattrocento show that images can exert ‘power’ on us by entangling us in lengthier perceptual processes that are not entirely under our control.

Alle spalle dei due personaggi, nell’angolo di una fila di scaffali, un manoscritto aperto reca un’iscrizione, il cui testo, a giudizio della letteratura storico-artistica sull'argomento, è oggi illeggibile, sicché il messaggio o l'opera allusa risultano irriconoscibili. In questo testo presunto illeggibile vengono identificati i vv. 93-105 della terza canzone del Convivio dantesco, Le dolci rime d’amor ch’io solea [Rime, 4 (LXXXII)], e in particolare, centrale dal punto di vista visuale e dunque semantico, il v. 101: «È gentilezza dovunqu'è vertute». Il contributo si sofferma sul significato di tale scelta iconografica e la contestualizza nell’ambito della cultura letteraria d’età laurenziana, mettendo in luce i rapporti fra il dipinto di Filippino e il trattato De vera nobilitate di Cristoforo Landino.
In Filippino Lippi’s Double portrait, nowadays at the Denver Art Museum, the artist is portrayed together with his patron and friend Piero Del Pugliese. Behind them, on the corner of a row of bookshelves, an open manuscript shows an inscription, whose text has been considered unreadable by art historians, so that it is impossible to decipher its message or the work being referred to. Lines 93-105 of the third canzone of Dante’s Convivio, Le dolci rime d’amor ch’io solea solea [Rime, 4 (LXXXII)], and especially line 101, «È gentilezza dovunqu'è vertute», central from the visual and semantic point of view, are identified in this allegedly unreadable piece of text. The paper focuses on the meaning of such an iconographic choice, putting it in the context of the literary environment of the Laurentian age, showing the connections between Filippino’s painting and Cristoforo Landino’s treatise De Vera Nobilitate.

A drawing by Filippino Lippi, which represents an old man singing and playing a lira da braccio (Florence, Uffizi Gallery, Gabinetto Disegni e Stampe, inv. 249E), evidently relates to the drawn images of musicians well known in Early Renaissance Florence. But the distinctive look and the ecstatic state of the man depicted make us search for a narrative in the drawing. Bernard Berenson interpreted it as an image of the King David. However, from the iconographical point of view, the model largely looks like Orpheus in the series of spalliera paintings by Jacopo del Sellaio which depict Angelo Poliziano’s Favola d’Orfeo (ca. 1490, separate parts are stored in museums of Rotterdam, Kiev, and Krakow). Stylistically, our drawing could be dated between the mid-1480s and the mid-1490s, close to the painted series, which are also similar to the drawings 232E and 1249E of the same collection made by other draughtsmen in the manner of Filippino. It is possible that these drawings from Filippino’s workshop could be free studies from the Sellaio’s paintings or, otherwise, two preparatory drawings for the series of panels on Orpheus’ story, which were finally commissioned to another master.
