American Zionism

Being the final product of his doctoral studies, Paul Wilkinson’s book, For Zion’s Sake, intends to reveal how John Nelson Darby’s detractors have distorted Christian Zionism while directly challenging academics who believe dispensationalism has little theological or historical value.  The purpose of this review is not to critique dispensationalism directly but to summarize and evaluate Wilkinson’s research and conclusions. In the end, Wilkinson’s ideological agenda and prejudicial research presents a thoroughly one-sided and indefensible case for Christian Zionism. In addition to his shameful demonization tactics against anyone who disagrees, Wilkinson’s research capabilities demonstrate a deliberate bias with little intention of conducting a fair and honest assessment of the subject. His style of writing amounts to nothing more than inflammatory claptrap, engaging in a puerile smear campaign against nondispensationalists that panders to the rhetoric of pseudo-intellectual prophecy pundits and apocalyptic hysteria. His research and conclusions are elementary at best, if not outright disgraceful.

This timely monograph takes as its starting point the provocative contention that Holocaust film scholarship has been marginalized academically despite the crucial role Holocaust film has played in fostering international awareness of the Nazi genocide and scholarly understandings of cinematic power. The book suggests political and economic motivations for this seeming paradox, the ideological parameters of which are evident in debates and controversies over Holocaust films themselves, and around Holocaust culture in general. Lending particular attention to four exemplary Holocaust “art” films (KORCZAK [Poland, 1990], THE QUARREL [Canada, 1990], ENTRE NOUS [France, 1983], and BALAGAN [Germany, 1994]), this book breaks disciplinary ground by drawing critical connections between public and scholarly debates over Holocaust representation, and the often sophisticated cinematic structures lending aesthetic shape to them in today’s global arena.

The occasion of marking seventy years since the establishment of
the State of Israel calls for a reconsideration of the complex relations
between Zionism, Jewish statehood, and Reform Judaism.
In terms of their initial political orientation, Reform ideology and
Zionism were strongly opposed Jewish responses to modernity:
the first pinned its hopes on emancipation and the prospects of
integration as a minority in a liberal society, whereas the later disregarded
that possibility and called for the eventual realization of
Jewish statehood. Especially since the pivotal moment of 1948 but
also prior to that, attempts have been made to reconcile these two
worldviews and bridge the gap between the different modes of
Jewish existence they represent.

One such bridge builder, a tragic one nevertheless, was Rabbi
Judah Leib Magnes. In his attempts to reconcile Reform Zionism
with the political realities of pre-state Israel, he reveals a tension
that prevails till our times (albeit in different form). That is:
these two Jewish responses to modernity—Reform Judaism and
Zionism—differ not only in their political ramifications, but also in
terms of their religious predicaments. Early Zionism was by and
large a secular project, a fact that many American Zionists of the
time found difficult to come to terms with.

Religious issues, properly speaking, are related to two human concerns: ethics (works) and salvation (faith). In this essay I explore the space occupied by Israel in American religious life – a topic that has intermittently engaged the attention of quite a few Americans and been of acute significance to some of them, at both levels of religious thought. Several historical trajectories have converged to confer upon Israel this kind of role. Centuries of theological development in Anglo-American Protestantism in which the place of scripture has been prominent have caused Americans’ ideas of sacred history to be intertwined with the geography of the Bible.

This paper explores Mordecai Kaplan's critique of political or pragmatic Zionism. His critique, I argue, can still be relevant to contemporary Zionism as it struggles with the definition of the State of Israel as simultaneously Jewish and democratic, copes with a rise of strident Jewish nationalism, and grapples with issues of religious freedom and pluralism. I suggest that Kaplan’s Zionism offers an alternative perspective to those dominant in Israeli and Zionist circles today.
