New Jersey Introduces Attempt to Legalize Collegiate Sportsbetting

Last week a New Jersey politician introduced a resolution that would amend the state's constitution and thereby allow gamblers to bet on collegiate sports that take place in the Garden State.

Current New Jersey law sees in-state collegiate events illegal to be bet on. The state is home to Rutgers University, which plays Division 1 football, basketball, and other sports, and sees large amounts of interest from bettors. The resolution is formally known as ACR 140 and was introduced by Assemblyman Michael Venezia.

The proposal has been referred to the Assembly Tourism, Gaming and the Arts Committee for review and debate. It's likely that the bill will face an uphill battle, as a previous attempt to amend the constitution to allow for collegiate betting came in 2021 and was rejected by voters with a 57/43% margin.
