Cyprus Begins Blocking Internet Gambling Sites

The Mediterranean nation of Cyprus has announced that they begun blocking illegal internet gambling websites through the country's Internet Service Provider.

The island's National Betting Authority has announced that a list of 270 illegal betting sites has been compiled and that a directive has been issued that requires the ISPs to comply within 72 hours.

Some of the more popular betting sites to be part of the blockade are Bwin.Party Digital, William Hill, and Betfair, although many other large betting sites had previously exited the Cyprus gaming market when the law was passed last year. It should be noted that the only legal online betting site to remain available to the public is Greece's gambling monopoly OPAP.

Internet providers who do not comply with the directive are subject to fines reaching €30,000 for the violations.
