Buddhist Afghanistan before Islam

Beauty and significance of Buddhist Mes Aynak | Afghanistan
(Kartemquin) May 6, 2015: #SAVEMESAYNAK. Watch the film: igg.me/at/savemesaynak.

FILM: Saving Mes Aynak
The award-winning film Saving Mes Aynak follows Afghan archeologist Qadir Temori as he races against time to save this 5,000-year-old Buddhist archeological site in Afghanistan from imminent demolition [by Chinese industrialists who want to extract gold and rare earth minerals].

Saving Mes Aynak, from the producers of Life Itself and The Interrupters, examines the conflict between ancient cultural preservation and new economic opportunity, through the lens of the Afghan archeologists and local villagers who live and work near Mes Aynak.

They face a nearly impossible battle against the communist Chinese, the Islamic Taliban, and local politics to save their Buddhist culture and heritage from permanent erasure. But we can help.
  • We must try to stop this from happening (igg.me/at/savemesaynak).
  • The Buddha was born in Afghanistan, according to Dr. Ranajit Pal, which at that time was a part of ancient Gandhara, and the oldest Buddhist texts are from there: Gandhāran Buddhist texts. This is why the largest unexcavated Buddhist temple is in Afghanistan, why the oldest Buddhist texts are from here, and why the largest Buddha statues were built here (including the most massive one in the world, a buried reclining Buddha in the lion's pose under Bamiyan). The Shakyians, from which we derive the name Shakyamuni, are the ancient Indo-Sakas.
  • [UPDATE: Sakka, Kwan YinMaha Brahma, and/or Prajnaparamita Devi seem to have intervened and raised the human supply of rare earth minerals, which means the price was brought down, which stopped the Chinese government in its tracks. It already built train tracks to the site to begin extracting the country's mineral resources, but it does not seem feasible (profitable) now to do so. Other sources of these formerly rare minerals were found on the seabed by Russian and other prospectors. That seems to have made things safe...until everyone needs a second cellphone and more electronics, which are dependent on these elements. So take care of your devices and use them longer, extending their usefulness and lifespan even though Apple Corporation and others want planned obsolescence.]
For the past few years, the effort of American Director (and Northwestern University Professor) Brent E. Huffman, through Saving Mes Aynak, has played a vital role in delaying the demolition of this historical treasure.

Mes Aynak: 1 sq. mile Buddhist temple complex
But again time may be quickly running out. A state-owned Chinese mining company still has immediate plans to destroy Mes Aynak and mine it for precious minerals, and it could happen AT ANY MOMENT.

Now, the only way for Mes Aynak to be saved is if the Afghan government (that sold off the mineral rights in a desperate attempt to earn foreign currency) intervenes, halts mining, and officially petitions to UNESCO to make Mes Aynak a World Heritage Site.
Only the Afghan government can approach UNESCO. Through the film Saving Mes Aynak, the major goal is to raise mass awareness of the impending demolition, creating an international movement to put pressure on the mining company, the Afghanistan government, and UNESCO to make Mes Aynak a World Heritage Site.

This is the ONLY WAY to #SAVEMESAYNAK. The more funds raised, the more people will see the film and know the beauty and importance of Mes Aynak, and the greater the chance of Mes Aynak being saved.

To do this, the focal point of the campaign is #SaveMesAynak Day, July 1st, a global event when supporters everywhere stream the film and stand in unity together to save Mes Aynak.

Through social media, plans are to use this day to spark worldwide conversation, action, and protest. After that, an ambitious outreach effort will be mounted through the film to reach as many people as can be reached.

The more awareness that can be raised, the larger the pressure that can be put on the Afghan government to stop the demolition and to formally petition UNESCO instead. This way, we can all ensure Mes Aynak's safety for future generations. #savemesaynak

Hey, UNESCO, declare it a World Heritage Site

Afghan Buddhist treasures are priceless.
[Look, we're working on it:] ...a number of achievements, especially related to the enhancement of the joint Ministry of Information and Culture (MoIC)-Ministry of Mines and Petroleum (MoMP) discussions about the Mes Aynak case. During a round of renegotiation between the MoMP and the Mining Company, it was suggested to implement an underground mining method, at least for the Central Aynak Deposit, to allow for in-situ conservation. This exploration of an integrated approach from the side of the MoMP, a tremendous step forward, led to the organization of the Mes Aynak Symposium (July 2019). The aim was to provide the government with a complete understanding of the relationship between mining and cultural resources in Mes Aynak and to examining the available options to reconcile them before approving a mining plan... unesco.org/en...afghanistan-heritage

Afghanistan earthquake: Race to rescue victims in Herat Province

Kabul is part of ancient Kapilavastu
Emergency teams in Afghanistan are racing to rescue people from the rubble left by a powerful earthquake that struck the west of the country.

More than 1,000 people are feared dead after the 6.3-magnitude quake hit villages in Herat Province on Saturday.

With communications down and many roads blocked, rescue workers are struggling to reach remote areas. Hundreds have also been injured.

The UN and other organizations have begun to rush in emergency supplies. The earthquake struck about 40 km (25 miles) north-west of the city of Herat at around 11:00 am local time (06:30 GMT) on Saturday.

The worst-affected communities consist of mud structures. "In the very first shake all the houses collapsed," Herat resident Bashir Ahmad, whose family lives in one of the villages, told AFP news agency.

"Those who were inside the houses were buried," he added. "There are families we have heard no news from."

The World Health Organization (WHO) said at least 465 houses had been flattened.

Villagers have used shovels and their hands to pull survivors from the rubble. With their homes destroyed, many residents are preparing to sleep in the open for a second night.

The exact death toll is still being established. The UN's humanitarian affairs office in Afghanistan says more than 1,000 people have been killed, and about 500 are still missing.

Earlier on Sunday, the Taliban government said 2,000 people had either been killed or wounded. In a country with sorely inadequate medical facilities, hospitals are struggling to care for the injured.

"For the treatment of the victims of the incident we are doing our best," disaster management ministry spokesman Mullah Janan Sayeq told reporters in the capital Kabul [one of the three seasonal capitals of ancient Kapilavastu, with the Buddha being born in Lumbini (Sistan Balochistan) of an Iranian/Aryan mother, according to maverick Indian historian Dr. Ranajit Pal, Ph.D.].

This Buddhist stupa (burial mound) was hewn right into the rock as if with lasers.
.
"On-site search operations in the affected area are ongoing," he said. Herat is located 120km (75 miles) east of the Iranian border and is considered to be the cultural capital of Afghanistan.

An estimated 1.9 million people are believed to be living in the province. Afghanistan is frequently hit by earthquakes -- especially in the Hindu Kush Mountain Range (part of the Himalayas) as it lies near the junction of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates.

In June last year, the province of Paktika was hit by a 5.9 magnitude quake which killed more than 1,000 people and left tens of thousands homeless. More

Jail Trump or buy timeshare? (Kimmel & Oliver)

Trump arrest could happen soon, GOP lowlifes scream "witch hunt," Florida aims to ban period talk
(Jimmy Kimmel) March 20, 2023 #Kimmel Indictments are in the air as we await the possible arrest of Donald Trump, if it happens the Secret Service (SS) would bring him, possibly in cuffs, to the Manhattan District Attorney’s office for a mugshot and fingerprints, some MAGA supporters online have been talking about creating what they call a "Patriot Moat" to surround Trump and prevent Neo-Nazi Stormtrooper police from taking him in, Republicans in the House of Representatives are gathered in Orlando for their annual “issues” retreat, all the usual lowlifes are screaming "witch hunt," former VP Mike Pence is also trying to stay on the good side of the crazies, Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani believes that we should all be focused on Hunter Biden’s laptop (and all the drug addled naked images he had stored in it), Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis slipped a zinger in at Trump’s expense and Donny fired back implying that Ronnie "DeSanctimonious" is gay, so many of Trump’s legal issues are based on him being dumb, a kid at the NCAA Wrestling Championship lost a match and his mom was very upset, many thanks to our good friends at 6ABC News in Philadelphia for providing us with a stellar edition of the (double-fisted) "Unintentional Joke of the Day," and Republicans in the Sunshine State (Florida) are considering legislation that would ban teachers from discussing menstruation and human sexuality in elementary school.

Arraign check: Why no arrest yet?

Who would be dumb enough to -- having been lied to legally -- still buy a timeshare? No one. But when they are rebranded as "vacation clubs" or "vacation ownership plans," they're hard to resist. These are mere euphemisms (nice words that replace ugly ones) to disguise what they really are. Walk away, fast, even if Hyatt or Wyndam or another famous hotel is pitching them.

Native American testimonials; Suicide (video)

Xochitl, Ashley Wells, Seth Auberon, Wisdom Quarterly; OBZURV (video); PRI.org

Do Europeans identify with Native Americans?
People say the greatest genocide was not American slavery, the American dropping of atomic bombs on human beings, or the German Holocaust, but the systematic murder of the Native Americans by European colonizers, particularly the British, Spanish, and French.

The fact is that genocide -- ethnic cleansing, human trafficking, suicide-inducing torture and ruin -- is still going on. It is in progress.

.
England divided the Americas, taking the USA for itself, Canada went to France, and Spain got Central and South America. Whether or not those empires still rule in an overt way is secondary. Hegemony (cultural influence) is as strong as ever, stronger than before, extending out to the US Empire and its colonies, past, present, and future.

There were the Philippines, Hawaii, Guam, Haiti, the Virgin Islands, Dominican Republic, Vietnam, and so on. The US military is still trying to conquer Africa (Israel, neighboring countries) and the Stans (the geopolitical Middle East such Iraq and Iran), and other countries we plan to invade far in advance of arranging a pretext to send troops and drones in.

Afghanistan's ancient Buddhist heritage (PBS)

Brent Huffman; PBS NewsHour; K Films; Amber Larson and Dhr. Seven, Wisdom Quarterly
Medhill University's Prof. Huffman, the director behind the new documentary “Saving Mes Aynak,” tells the story of one of Afghanistan’s greatest Buddhist archaeological treasures and the threats it faces from a Chinese mining company (NewsHour.PBS.org/art)
Experts: How to preserve ancient Mes Aynak ruins while mining
ARCH (Alliance for the Restoration of Cultural Heritage)
Mes Aynak near Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, is one of the largest copper and gold deposits in the world, located 20 km south of Kabul in Logar Province. The huge site looms as a potential revenue source for Afghanistan, a country deeply in need of economic growth, hectored by years of war under U.S. occupation. But Mes Aynak is also a vast Buddhist temple complex with over 20 ruin locations, including numerous 5th-6th century Buddhist monasteries and nunneries, a fortress, and evidence of even older Bronze Age settlements buried beneath the rubble of ancient copper mines. Archeologists from around the world hold that Mes Aynak represents a cultural heritage site of immense importance. More

Hong Kong plane crash caught on video

Emergency personnel sort through luggage recovered at the site of a commercial plane crash in Taiwan, Feb. 5, 2015. TransAsia Airways Flight 235 with 58 people aboard clipped a bridge shortly after takeoff and crashed into a river in the island's capital of Taipei (AP).

  • PHOTOS: 15 survivors, others missing or deceased (AP) A pilot of TransAsia Airways Flight 235 said, "Mayday, mayday, engine flameout" moments before the propjet banked sharply and crashed into a river, an aviation official said today, but declined to comment on a possible cause for the accident. Engine flameout refers to flames being extinguished in the combustion chamber of the engine, so that it shuts down and no longer drives the propeller. Causes of a flameout could include a lack of fuel or [striking] volcanic ash, a bird, or some other object. "Mayday" is an international emergency call.
(AK) In more bad news for China, Beijing-bound Malaysia Airlines MH370 has been declared lost and all aboard dead even though no part of it was found. Will government still search?

MH370 Malaysia Declares Plane's Disappearance an Accident
The Malaysian government has officially declared the disappearance of Malaysian Airline flight MH370 an accident and has said that there were no survivors. No trace of the Beijing-bound aircraft has been found since it disappeared on March 8, 2014.

Officials say that the recovery operation is ongoing but that the 239 people on board are now presumed dead. The plane's whereabouts are still unknown despite a massive international search in the southern Indian Ocean. The declaration on today should allow compensation payments to relatives of the victims.

Deepest sorrow: Malaysian officials added that the recovery of the missing aircraft remained a priority and that they had pursued "every credible lead." Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) Director-General Azharuddin Abdul Rahman said that it was "with the heaviest heart and deepest sorrow that we officially declare Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 an accident.''

"All 239 of the passengers and crew on board MH370 are presumed to have lost their lives," he said. Following today's announcement, China's foreign ministry called for compensation for the victims' families. "We call on the Malaysian side to honor the promise made when they declared the flight to have been lost and earnestly fulfill their compensation responsibilities," spokeswoman Hua Chunying said in a statement.

WARNING: Satire! "Burning Airlines Give You So Much More" lyrics below

The majority of the passengers on MH370 were Chinese. Four vessels are currently searching the seafloor with specialized sonar technology in a remote stretch of ocean where the plane is believed to have ended its flight.

Mr. Azharuddin added that Malaysia, China, and Australia have spared no expense in the hunt for the plane. No evidence: Based on analysis of satellite and aircraft performance data, MH370 is thought to be in seas far west of the Australian city of Perth. The vessels have so far searched an area of over 18,000 km sq (11,185 square miles), according to officials.

The search area involved also has known depths of up to 6,000 m (19,685 ft). Mr. Azharuddin said that the progress of the safety investigation into the accident would be released soon, but that "at this juncture, there is no evidence to substantiate any speculations as to the cause of the accident." The DCA said yesterday said that it planned to release an interim report on the investigation on March 7, a day before the first anniversary of the disappearance.

Conspiracy theorists will not welcome this official conclusion by Malaysia as it declares MH370 an "accident" and all on board presumed dead, airline to proceed with compensation. Why would they proceed with compensation? Because burning airlines give you so much more. More

LYRICS
(Eno): When I got back home I found a message on the door/ Sweet Regina's gone to China crosslegged on the floor/ Of a burning jet that's smoothly flying/ Burning airlines give you so much more/  How does she intend to live when she's in far Cathay?/ I somehow can't imagine her just planting rice all day/ Maybe she will do a bit of spying/ With microcameras hidden in her hair/  I guess Regina's on a plane a Newsweek on her knees/ While miles below the curlews call from strangely stunted trees/ The painted sage sits just as though he's flying/ Regina's jet disturbs his wispy beard/.  When you reach Kyoto send a postcard if you can/ And please convey my fond regards to Chih-Hao's girl Yu-Lan/ I heard a rumor they were getting married/ But someone left the papers in Japan/.  Left them in Japan.

Tibet Nomads: China intensifies resettlement

China Intensifies Resettlement of Tibetan Nomads
Michael Lipin, Washington (VOA, Aug. 28, 2009)

The Chinese government announced this week that it has moved about 50,000 Tibetan nomads out of a nature reserve in the west of the country as part of a resettlement program that began in 2005. Beijing says the program is meant to protect the ecosystem of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. But Tibetan activists accuse the Chinese government of destroying an ancient nomadic culture that treats the environment with respect. More>>
