No Doubt

I jes' loves seeing Kelly's artwork in its original state, blue pencil and lush brush strokes. There were times when some strips might have had an assistant's help here and there, but it was Kelly shining through it all!

A Happy New Year

Heart-felt wishes for a good year of 2019 to you all!

I hand-colored this beautiful Kelly art several years ago as part of my tribute to his 100th birthday, and, well, it kinda says it all.

Let Nothing You Dismay

I never get tired of seeing Kelly's original art, specially when it's festive!

I SWAN!

Well now we've reached a point in Pogo continuity that was a HIGH point of my childhood, having seen some of this reprinted in Pogo's Sunday Punch in black & white and edited somewhat, cutting panels, adding panels, changing formats of panels.

For me, it was WHAM! I was de-LIGHTED to see this fantasy element of human bean gnomes suddenly appear in the swamp. But now all these years later I see this great panel below and realize that it was not in the Simon & Schuster book! And the lovely tree in the first panel of this week's strip was truncated, and now we see the almost watercolor effect as well.

What a cool little episode this was, an early forewarner of Prehysterical Pogo in the mid 1960s. I've included a couple of pages from the S&S book to show comparisons of panel edits.

Happy Sunday, Kelly Sunday!

Silently Steal Away

You just didn't see this kind of adventure in the other strips.
Steve Canyon, eat yer heart out!

From the Simon & Schuster book, below is the extra panel that would run in the 3-tier horizontal newspaper format.

THAT is SOME Space Ship!

This continuity is moving along into one of my favorite episodes, that of Pogo's first trip to "Mars".  It's lovely to see it unfold in color.

A Sort of Scourge Is Hit the Swamp

Wellwellwellwellwellwellwellwellwell . . .

It looks like we're back! Some sort of firewall was interfering deeply with stuff coming and going. That and changes with Blogger have been a royal pain.

I apologize to all those whose comments have stayed hidden for several months. It seems that the flood gate has opened to reveal those comments at last!

I still have lots of Kelly stuff to share, so let's hope that at least THIS swamp doesn't get drained!

Ding Nibbit!

We're back to the 3 tiers for a while, for continuity sake, which surely even old-time fans don't mind. I jes' love seeing these comics on the screen, where they can be called up instantly, in order, and blown up to examine details.

And cute?! Land sakes, Kelly could do cute without sugar.

A Tree Nobly and Gorgeously Trimmed

That second panel has probably perty close the smallest size Kelly's ever drawn any of his characters.

Gnakwoort!

I regret that the color (and lack of color) is screwy on this page. It shows the little regard that pressmen had for the comics by 1970. They probably said, "Eh, no one notice or care if we don't finish this. This'll just be trash in a couple of days", not knowing that 46 years later people all around the world DO notice and DO care.

Edded Owgga Air Add Leggo Ooms!

This week we have a bonus of TWO early Sunday strips!

If you are a dedicated Pogophile you have prolly seen these, as they appear in the lovely Fantagraphics reprint series.

But I have a goal of posting as many strips that I can of the Kelly oeuvre in my lifetime, whether they've been seen a lot or not,  and people relatively new to Pogo get to see a bunch of this stuff for the very first time! Yay!

Snug Up Here in My Place

Ulp! My apologies for being late posting. At least it's still Sunday here. I've been so busy trying to run a KickStarter campaign for a book of my art that I'm very much wanting to publish. It's a lot of work keeping that machinery running.

Anyway, here's today's Sunday strip. The panel of Albert laying Grundoon into the bed makes me think of how much I love the word 'snug' and 'snuggle'. Aren't those comforting words? Isn't that what we all want by the end of the day is to be snug and snuggle, with or without someone else?

And now a word from our sponsor. Yes, I've been doing this blog and others for years without pesky advertising, but this is important. Important for me and maybe you'll like it to. I want to encourage you and your friends to make a pledge in my KickStarter campaign. It's running from now until February 15 and is to raise funds to pay for printing and shipping of a book collection of my best art of the last couple of years. The art looks nothing like Walt Kelly would have done, yet Kelly was a major influence in my early art training, launching me on my long career in illustration.

You can pledge as little as $1 USD, but for $35 (+ shipping) you can have the actual (softcover) book in your hands. There are other options for hardcover copies and even original art. The campaign is off to a good start, but printing is expensive and we have a long road ahead to raise our full amount. Please consider pledging and/or promoting.

Here's the link:

That's it, that's my ad.

Happy Sunday, Kelly Sunday! Wishing you lots of snuggling this year...

Betrayed a Public Trust

1971, Kelly still had his drawing abilities, but the characters had evolved a slightly different look to them — perhaps akin to aging, like we human beans tend to do. Pogo looks 'off' in a couple of panels here, and in those days Pogo didn't have much to say or do, not really adding much to Kelly's burlesque, even as a straight-man. Albert emoted a lot of histrionics, and had some angular features. I detect some possible art assistance here...perhaps Selby? Yet for us Pogo fans, each strip was still worth it's weight in newsprint.

Cocoa an' Peaner Buckle Samwiches Would Help

Now we jump up into 1971 where Kelly's art is still pretty strong (what a swell coffee pot with an upside down flower), but his writing is a bit run down...sweet, but not as comical per panel as in days of yore. That's not a complaint, just an observation.

As always, LLK!

That's What This Country's All About

I don't blame Owl for wondering just what Albert is doing to his unicorn. No other strip in the comic section came close to matching Kelly's Boorawp.

 July 4, 1971

Above, a close-up view of a sort-of complex panel made even MORE complex by having another partially seen Pogo marching behind Seminole Sam. It's the same pose as the seen Pogo, making it seem like it's maybe a paste-up? Anyone have access to a scan of the original art to see what that's all about?

Dag Grabbit!

I'm going to bed 'early' tonight, so I'm posting this Sunday, Kelly Sunday on Saturday night. This is the last segment of this story arc. The strip following this one has already been posted on this blog somewhere in the distant past.

Actually, to the pain and misery of some of you, I'm going to skip the Sunday, Kelly Sunday postings for at least a coupla weeks. Now don't get too upset. By doing so I will be able to start posting other Kelly material that I haven't taken time to prepare yet. Most of it is pretty special stuff that I don't want getting buried by Sunday after Sunday posting . . .  at least for a while. Also, that will give me a chance to take inventory of what's left of the Sundays stash, because, well, we've posted a lot of strips and sooner or later, sob, we're gonna run out of what I've clipped. I need to figure out just how much longer this can go on. Don't panic yet—let's jes' see what's what.

So, stay 'tooned!
