starting another year

and another year older. january 1, 2012 -- still those same bright smiles.

{you may notice that my little man still has a big gap up top like the pics below. he knocked his front top teeth out a year and a half ago in a scooter accident. ouch! the dentist says the adult teeth are fine and will grow in when they're good + ready}

like mother, like daughter

my little gal got her hair cut on friday. the awesome french gentleman who cut her hair gave her a bit of a different style than her usual angled bob, but this suits her personality so well. pixie-like and a little crazy, just like her.
when i snapped a few pics of her that afternoon, i literally gasped when the image {above, left} came up on my computer screen. 'i've seen that picture before', i thought. i went to our other computer to pull up all the old family photos i've got scanned, and immediately found this picture of myself {above, right} from when i was just 2-1/2. it's one of my favourite pics of myself as a wee thing, i've always loved it.
i guess that's why i was so shocked by the picture of my little 2-1/2 year old d. because, beyond the blonde hair and green eyes, that was me staring back from the screen. right down to the crooked smile.

the sweetest moments

the sweetest moments happen at the most unlikely of times. this morning was a real challenge with these two. but then, after the storm, there was a moment like this one. i was reminded by a wise friend yesterday, it's not the tantrums, nor the hard times, but these moments -- these are the things i will remember years from now.

i just hope i don't forget them.

making valentines.

carefully writing all his friends names, picking out a colour to draw them each a heart, signing his name with a flourish. i love the way his tongue occasionally peeks out the side of his mouth while he's concentrating.
kindergarten valentines. this must be some kind of a milestone, right? well, even if it isn't, i'm savouring every moment. he just loves his friends + classmates so much, and that makes me feel pretty proud.

this super-fun valentine card idea came from design mom. we love how they turned out! my husband made some fun photoshop magic to fancify the photo. my little guy wrote the names on white card stock, and we glued the photos to the backs. so sweet!

six.

six. wow! i can hardly believe it. thanks for making me a mom, little guy. it's been the best six years ever.

shanna murray

artist - stylist - optimist. i love shanna murray's tagline, isn't it divine? i have always been an optimist, i just believe that things will work out in the end. i'm not saying i don't have thoughts of doubt, insecurity, and occasional hopelessness. who doesn't have those moments? but i do tend to look at the bright side over all. life just feels better that way.

anyhow, tangent aside, i just wanted to share the amazing wall decals by shanna murray. i know these have made the design blog rounds, but i've had decorating on my mind since our little one got into a big girl bed a couple weeks back. i want to finalize choices for her wall art. i've collected a couple of prints from etsy, and am on the hunt for a couple more. i will also be hanging julie morstad's alphabet cards, with baker's twine + mini clothes pegs. i feel like one of shanna's wall decals would be just right. i'm thinking this one, shown above, in charcoal. [her walls are palest greige, called dove wing]

though i also really love the sentiment here. i love you more than all the stars. isn't it true? sigh, so sweet. the garlands are awesome, too. i think it would be great to frame a whole wall of photos in these decals, like you see below. fun!

::::::

as an aside, i'm in the thick of the first week of kindergarten, getting used to a new, early routine and new activities. i've also volunteered to be assistant coach for said kindergartner's soccer team [i know, in all my 'spare' time]. between meetings + forms + practices on top of a more limited work schedule + starting holiday prep, i'm feeling a little swamped! i hope you understand my being a tad scarce in the parts. i promise to keep posting when i can, i am really missing the everyday...

also, i listed these hallowe'en cuties in my shop on monday. what do you think? who's your favourite spook? little o has staked his claim on frankenstein!

kindergarten

how did this happen so fast? surely i was just holding you in my arms a couple months ago, meeting you for the first time. my, how time flies.

my little kindergarten boy, so excited for everything fresh + new, so ready to soak up the world.

and so like your dad...i love this photo, perfectly in step!

someone else wanted to go to kindergarten, too. she missed you today, her favourite playmate + partner in crime. we all love you, little guy. go off into the big world, and find your place.

lookie here...

yesterday i took a rare day away from this space [unintentionally, just super busy around here!] but then found myself a few little pockets of time that i filled with reading more blogs than i have in a while. and there was just so much goodness out there, i thought i'd share a few links today to some of the things that caught my attention. enjoy!

popbar, a gorgeous popsicle spot in nyc, blogged at simplesong

papier mache, an online mag that is rather stunningly beautiful, blogged at bloesem kids {psst...papier mache has a blog, too}

this amazing tutorial for making your own fabric tape, blogged at creature comforts via maya*made

all of the fabulous nss wrap-up posts around blog land, in particular these pictorial round ups { day 1 :: day 2 :: day 3 :: day 4 } by eva of sycamore street press, blogged at poppytalk. i was especially taken by these lovely shops, from top, hammerpress, kamal, and pearl & marmalade.

this little blog

why do i blog? i've been thinking about this a lot this past couple of weeks. there are many reasons. what started simply as a place for me to catalogue my finds, and talk a bit about my work in between, has become a real hobby + a true love for me. it's like my nightly therapy as i sit here and toodle around the web, thinking about what i'd like to post, narrowing my choices, finding just the right products, designers, artists, places to feature, just the right pictures to show. i really love it. and after just a little over a year, i can't even imagine not writing here nearly every day.
fete print :: cosas minimas by blanca gomez [i love all of her work!]

a few weeks ago, i was delighted to find myself included on a shortlist of blogs written by moms living in greater vancouver. i hope people don't see me as an impostor on that list! i am not a mommy blogger. i don't write about parenting! this is my place be away from that. while i do mention the kids here + there, i need this place to just be me, a woman, undefined by my identity as a mom. you know when you're at the park, and the other moms know you as "o's mom"? isn't that amazing, how you go from being your own self, to your childrens' mama? please understand, i am not complaining!! i love it. i just find it fascinating. and i do it myself! i can't even tell you how many times i remember the child's name before the parents'.
i wonder if that is a factor of getting older, or perhaps it's that dreaded 'mommy brain' we all talk about while pregnant!

printed ceramic bowls :: horn of plenty :: available at room6

i am not saying that i don't enjoy reading about other people's parenting or mothering. i do, often! heather of dooce, whose no-holds-barred discussions on parenting makes me laugh day after day. gabrielle of design mom [who is expecting baby number 6 - amazing!], who eloquently posts about where design + motherhood intersect. amanda of soulemama, whose graceful + honest + gentle approach to parenting makes me strive to be a better mama. there are so many others out there, so much inspiration, so many amazing mothers.

vancouver mom is looking for what they call the 'ultimate' vancouver mom blogger. i am beyond honoured to be included in their shortlist, and even more thrilled that people have gone out of their way to visit me here, really read my blog, and decide whether or not they'd like to vote for me. are you visiting here for the first time? i'd love it if you'd say hello. and if you like what you see here, i'd love for you to come back, or tell a friend!

if you're feeling so inclined, i'd be so very happy if you'd cast a vote for me. today is the last day the polls are open, and the results will be announced on mother's day. how apt! thank you for all the support, i really appreciate it.

the photos i've included in this post are things that i've got on my current wishlist. perfect for mother's day, don't you think? perhaps my husband is reading...

lunch at the club...

i've got plans to make a lot of the baby's summer clothes this year, and one of my favourite places to stop for inspiration is crewcuts. i mean, come on.
gorgeous. here are a few ensembles that would be perfect for that summer country club vacation. brunch + afternoon swim + dinner on the terrace.

mette

there's every likelihood you've seen these beauties before, but i couldn't resist sharing them again here. limited-edition, vintage inspired frocks are designed and sewn locally here in vancouver by kristin rasmussen of mette. i love the simple mod silhouettes, letting the bold colours and fabrics stand out on their own. and the model is just a total doll!
