Real-time reconstruction of long-lived particles at LHCb using FPGAs

/LHCb Collaboration
Finding tracks downstream of the magnet at the earliest LHCb trigger level is not part of the baseline plan of the upgrade trigger, on account of the significant CPU time required to execute the search. Many long-lived particles, such as $K^0_S$ and strange baryons, decay after the vertex track detector, so that their reconstruction efficiency is limited. [...]

Real-time cluster finding for LHCb silicon pixel VELO detector using FPGA
/ Lazzari, Federico (U. Siena (main) ; INFN, Pisa) ; Bassi, Giovanni (INFN, Pisa ; Pisa, Scuola Normale Superiore) ; Cenci, Riccardo (INFN, Pisa ; Pisa, Scuola Normale Superiore) ; Morello, Michael J (INFN, Pisa ; Pisa, Scuola Normale Superiore) ; Punzi, Giovanni (INFN, Pisa ; Pisa U.)
In the Run-3 of LHCb, the High Level Trigger will have to process events at full LHC collision rate (30 MHz). This is a very challenging goal, and delegating some low-level tasks to FPGA accelerators can be very helpful by saving precious computing time. [...]

The last Complex WIMPs standing

We continue the study of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMP) started in [arXiv:2107.09688], focusing on a single complex electroweak $n$-plet with non-zero hypercharge added to the Standard Model. The minimal splitting between the Dark Matter and its electroweak neutral partner required to circumvent direct detection constraints allows only multiplets with hypercharge smaller or equal to 1. We present results of an R&D; study for a specialized processor capable of precisely reconstructing, in pixel detectors, hundreds of charged-particle tracks from high-energy collisions at 40 MHz rate. We apply a highly parallel pattern-recognition algorithm, inspired by studies of the processing of visual images by the brain as it happens in nature, and describe in detail an efficient hardware implementation in high-speed, high-bandwidth FPGA devices. $W$ bosons are produced at LHC from a forward-backward symmetric initial state. Their decay to a charged lepton and a neutrino has a strong spin analysing power. [...]

We present the results of an R&D; study for a specialized processor capable of precisely reconstructing events with hundreds of charged-particle tracks in pixel and silicon strip detectors at $40\,\rm MHz$, thus suitable for processing LHC events at the full crossing frequency. For this purpose we design and test a massively parallel pattern-recognition algorithm, inspired to the current understanding of the mechanisms adopted by the primary visual cortex of mammals in the early stages of visual-information processing. Closing the window on WIMP Dark Matter

We study scenarios where Dark Matter is a weakly interacting particle (WIMP) embedded in an ElectroWeak multiplet. In particular, we consider real SU(2) representations with zero hypercharge, that automatically avoid direct detection constraints from tree-level $Z$-exchange. [...]
