Definitions
- the present invention relates to an ozonized cod liver oil, to pharmaceutical and cosmetic compositions containing said oil and to a process for the preparation thereof.
- compositions In particular, antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal activities of these ozonized compositions have been described. Moreover, the use of these compositions for topical applications has been described both in therapeutic and cosmetic fields.
- ozonized cod liver oil has particularly advantageous technological and applicative features compared to both the untreated raw material and vegetable oils subjected to ozonization.
- cod liver oil exhibits much higher antimicrobial activities than those observed in ozonized vegetable oils or fats.
- the ozonization treatment does not change the typical tissue and epidermal regenerative properties of cod liver oil, considering its natural components (especially vitamin A and vitamin D).
- the present inventors have found that, in contrast to ozonized vegetable oils, the ozonized cod liver oil is not irritating to the skin and has unexpected technological features and unexpected features with respect to spreadability, organoleptic properties and physical and chemical stability, allowing also perfect miscibility with the various auxiliary substances commonly used to obtain specific pharmaceutical forms.
- this invention relates to ozonized cod liver oil, to a process for its preparation and to pharmaceutical and cosmetic compositions comprising said oil.
- Figure 1A shows a 13 C NMR spectrum of ozonized cod liver oil.
- Figure 1 B shows a 1 H NMR spectrum of ozonized cod liver oil.
- a first object of this invention is an ozonized cod liver oil.
- Cod liver oil ozonization is performed using a commercial ozone generator at a temperature comprised between +20° and +40 0 C, more preferably +30°C.
- the ozone-oxygen mixture required for the ozonization process is obtained from medical oxygen.
- the gas employed for said process is produced by means of a suitable apparatus. It contains between 95% and 99.5% oxygen and 0.5% and 5% ozone, depending on gas flow and on the electrical gradient used.
- the so-obtained ozone-oxygen mixture is bubbled continuously through the whole volume of cod liver oil during the entire ozonization process.
- the ozonized cod liver oil of the present invention unlike vegetable oils subjected to similar transformation, has an excellent chemical stability and remains stable for at least six months under standard storage conditions.
- the present invention relates also to compositions for pharmaceutical and cosmetic use, comprising the above-mentioned cod liver oil in association with appropriate excipients and/or diluents.
- the cod liver oil ozonized according to the present invention has marked antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal and reepithelizing properties. Therefore, according to a further aspect, the present invention relates to the use of ozonized cod liver oil for the preparation of a composition having the above- mentioned properties.
- this invention refers to the use of ozonized cod liver oil for the preparation of medicaments for the treatment of bacterial, viral or fungine infections, acne, chalazion, gengivitis, dermatitis, sores, especially pressure sores, ulcers, especially gastric and duodenal ulcers and ulcers in the oropharyngeal cavity.
- the present invention relates to the use of ozonized cod liver oil for the preparation of a cosmetic or pharmaceutical composition for the treatment of cellulitis .
- compositions of the present invention can have a formulation suitable for topical or systemic administration.
- the ozonized cod liver oil of the invention has rehologic properties that are especially suitable for administration by the topical route.
- the ozonization reaction causes an increase in cod liver oil viscosity, thus improving the features of spreadability and permanence of this composition on the site of action.
- Use for topical administration refers to the composition as such or mixed with appropriate auxiliary substances, in order to obtain pharmaceutical and/or cosmetic formulations allowing the desired delivery, permanence in the site of action and posology.
- Auxiliary substances for external use which can be mixed with the ozonized cod liver oil of the invention are, for instance, vaseline oil, lanolin, solid paraffin and emulsifying agents.
- cod liver oil can be administered as such, without any excipient, or in the form of soft gelatinous capsules.
- the iodine index according to the method described in FU Xl Ed., was measured in cod liver oil samples prepared according to the procedure described in Example 1, with the exception that the ozonization time was changed. In fact, this parameter is important in order to correlate the transformation potential of the preparation following the ozonization process.
- the peroxide index has been measured as function of the ozonization- time using the method described in FU Xl Ed. This method is commonly used as indicator of the quality of the oil ozonization process and as control, since it is simple, fast and accurate.
- cod liver oil ozonization involves a progressive decrease of the signals originated from olefinic carbons at 130 ppm and the appearance of new signals at 103 ppm, which can be attributed to formation of ozonide.
