Abstract

A personal care composition comprising diglycerol as a humectant.

Description

PERSONAL CARE COMPOSITIONS COMPRISING DIGLYCEROL
Summary of the Invention
The invention pertains to personal care compositions comprising diglycerol, either alone or in combination with other polyglycerols. The personal care compositions, like cleansing compositions, include, for example, body wash, shampoo, baby wash, liquid hand soap, hair and skin conditioners, shaving creams and gels, moisturizing shaving preparations, lotions, moisturizing creams and the like. The personal care compositions may further comprise one or more of solvents, humectants, surfactants, emulsifiers, emollients, chelating agents, preservatives, buffers, viscosity modifiers, extracts, skin conditioners, skin protectants, proteins, antimicrobial agents, fragrances, polymers, pH adjusters, and the like.
Detailed Description of the Invention
The personal care compositions comprise diglycerol which functions as a humectant. Thus, the compositions comprise a humectant that comprises diglycerol. The diglycerol may be the only polyglycerol in the humectant or it may be used in conjunction with other polyglycerols, such as all polyglycerol homologs. The humectant in the composition may comprise, consist essentially or consist of diglycerol. Also, the humectant in the personal care compositions may comprise, consist essentially or consist of diglycerol and other polyglycerols. The personal care compositions may comprise other humectant material in addition to the diglycerol and other polyglycerol material.
Diglycerol is a polyol consisting of two molecules of glycerol bonded by an ether linkage and is available from Solvay Interox, Inc., Houston, Texas, USA ("Solvay"). Diglycerol is a viscous liquid which is a clear and aesthetically pleasing product. Diglycerol is practically colorless and odorless and very mild to the skin. Compared to glycerol, diglycerol has a lower hydroxy number than glycerol which imparts a lower water binding affinity to the composition.
The compositions of the invention may comprise polyglycerol and all of its homologs. The other polyglycerol materials which may be used as humectant material for the personal care compositions include triglycerol, tetraglycerol, pentaglycerol, hexaglycerol, heptaglycerol and octaglycerol. Polyglycerol-3 from Solvay may be used in the composition. Polyglycerol-3 is a combination of diglycerol, tetraglycerol, pentaglycerol, hexaglycerol, heptaglycerol and octaglycerol, with trace amounts of monoglycerol. When polyglycerol-3 is used in the compositions, the polyglycerol-3 may be the source of the diglycerol in the personal care compositions, or a separate source of diglycerol may be used in addition to the polyglycerol-3 which also provides diglycerol to the composition. A polyglycerol material available from MMP, Inc., South Plainfield, New Jersey, USA under the tradename Polycast-3 may be used in the invention.
The diglycerol provides the personal care composition with increased initial impact of fragrance, improved fragrance retention, enhanced perceived smoothness and silkiness and improved emollience and conditioning. In addition, the diglycerol, and the combination of the diglycerol with other polyglycerols in the compositions, provides odor masking qualities to the personal care compositions. Thus, the diglycerol, optionally with the other polyglycerols, effectively masks objectionable odors which inherently result in a number of personal care compositions and provides a more preferred odor profile. Such objectionable odors can result from raw ingredients, for example, herbal extracts, proteins, active ingredients and the like.
The personal care compositions may also comprise cationic polymeric materials which act synergistically with the diglycerol and other optional polyglycerols, when part of the compositions, to provide the compositions with improved and unexpected properties, such as increased initial impact of fragrance, improved fragrance retention and enhanced smoothness, silkiness, and moisturizing, among others.
The cationic polymeric materials are film forming polymers which, upon application to the skin of a user, form films which are substantive to hair and skin. Examples of cationic polymers useful in the invention include MERQUAT® polymers, such as MERQUAT® 550, from Nalco Company, Naperville, Illinois, USA. MERQUAT® 550 is a copolymer of dimethyldiallylammonium chloride and acrylamide that can be used in a synergistic combination with other functional additives in the composition, for example, the diglycerol and the optional other polyglycerols, to provide the benefits of moisturizing, conditioning, film formation, and improved skin feel, in addition to the unexpected benefits discussed above.
Another example of cationic polymers useful in the invention are quatemized hydroxyl ethyl cellulose ethers available from Amerchol (Dow) Midland, Michigan, USA under the trade name UCARE®, for example, UCARE® polymer JR400. Such polymers are water soluble substantive polymers having a cellulosic backbone which lend a pleasant, smooth, conditioned feel to skin and hair. These polymers can function to reduce irritation potential of surfactants and other materials that may be in the composition, in addition to the synergistic benefits discussed above with respect to the humectants (e.g. the polyols) in the compositions.
The invention involves personal care compositions comprising diglycerol. The invention further pertains to such personal care compositions wherein the invention further comprises polyglycerol and all of its homologs, including triglycerol, tetraglycerol, pentaglycerol, hexaglycerol, heptaglycerol and octaglycerol. The invention further involves personal care compositions comprising cationic polymers and diglycerol and polyglycerols. In all embodiments, the personal care compositions may also comprise one or more solvents, humectants, surfactants, emulsifiers, emollients, chelating agents, preservatives, buffers, viscosity modifiers, extracts, skin conditioners, skin protectants, proteins, antimicrobial agents, fragrances, polymers, pH adjusters and the like.
