Abstract

The internal combustion engine forms squeeze gaps (25) between the pistons (2) and the cylinder head (5) and is provided in addition with deflection means (4, 20) in the combustion chamber (8) which produce a rotary flow in the combustion chamber. The floor of the combustion chamber is formed by a trough-shaped cavity (22) in the floor of the piston so that a squeeze gap is formed extending over the entire width of the combustion chamber. In the region between the valves (6, 7) there extends a further, central squeeze gaps (26) which, in conjunction with the wall of the cylinder head lying thereover, forms a further squeeze gap flow (30) which reinforces the lateral squeeze gap flows (29). By this, the moment of ignition can be further advanced and the temperature peaks, as well as the NOx reduced. It is possible to ignite a very lean mixture having an air excess of 30% and over, and this also keeps the combustion temperature at a low value and hence the production of NOx is lower. The CO emission, as a result of the leaner mixture, is in any case smaller and the CH exceptionally low owing to the complete combustion due to rotation. Test results show a reduction in consumption of 15-20% compared with presently known motors.
