WATER-OURB-BOX LID.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 14, 1909.
Application filed March 3, 1909. Serial No. 481,039.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN J. HEIM- BUEOHER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburg, in the .county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have made new and useful Improvements in WVater-Curb-Box Lids, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improvement in water curb boxes, and especially in the lids thereof; and the invention consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawing-11 igure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of a device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the lid. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the lid, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view from the upper side of the lid.
By my invention I provide a box lid which can be readily applied and removed and will be held securely in place when applied for use as shown in Fig. 1.
In the construction shown, A is the upper portion of a water curb box, and at the upper end is formed the lateral angular flange or lip A. The lid or cover B is composed of segmental sections B and B hinged together at D at one edge, and provided at a diametrically opposite point Witha fastening at B and the lid is provided with hook like portions or lugs C at its edges which engage beneath the lip or flange A when the lid is applied as shown in Fig. 1. The lugs or portions C are arranged in series and preferably two on each of the sections of the lid as best shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawing. In securingthe hinge B the sections B and B are preferably provided with knuckles perforated for the passage of a pintle D, and the fastening at B is effected by means of knuckles B and B and a cotter pin B but manifestly, a pad lock may be used instead of a cotter pin B, when it is desired to lock the lid in place.
The construction is simple, can be cheaply made and easily applied and efficiently serves the purpose for which it is designed.
I claim A box lid adapted for use substantially as described and comprising segmental sec tions hinged together at one edge, and having fastening means at an opposite point and provided with depending hook like port-ions or lugs to underlie a flange on the box the sections combining to form a circular plate adapted to cover a curb box when the original lid is lost or displaced all substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
