' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 11, 19.07.
Application filed January 26, 1907. Serial No. 354,193.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I,'F RANK H. G. Monsn, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident of.
the city of Cambridge, county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to boxes and it hasparticular reference to boxes which are tightly closed to prevent the contents thereof from escaping by reason of volatilization or evaporation. boxes which are to be tightly sealed and to means for easily opening such boxes. When boxes are to contain a volatile substance itis absolutely necessary that there be a very tight closure between the cover and It is usual to make such a box so that the cover partially telescopes-over the box, or vice versa, sothat between the body and the cover of thebox.- The surfaces of the two being tightly compressed together it is exceedingly difficult to separate them by reason of friction and by reason of sticking of the surfaces which may be due to enamel ,or other finishing material used for covering one of the surfaces.
., In my invention I provide a means where- ,by the cover may be easily wedged or pried from the body of the box without in any way injuring or altering the coiitactsurfac'esor destroying the shape of the boxand which may be as tightly closed after opening the same as before opening.
The invention .consists in providing a cover having a surface located in proximity to a surface located on the body of the box, the said surfaces being at an-angle to each other.
The invention also consists in providing a means for a cover and a means on the body of the box which enables one to wedge the cover from the box or to pry the cover from the The invention also consists in forming a box having a beading provided with an inclined surface at thetop and a semi-circular surface at the bottom to give the saidbeading structural strength, and to enable the cover 5 to be pried off. The invention consists in other features described in the following description, shown in the drawing and claimedin the claims.
Referri .to the drawings, F' re 1 illustrates e. si e view of the box em odying my invention, a part of it being shownin section.
It has moreover reference to Fig. 2 illustrates a side view of a portion of thebox showing the position of the means for wedging the cover from the box. Fig. 3 also illustrates a side view of a portion of the box showing the operation in prying the cover from the box.
Havin thus described my invention in general, I will describe its details by using reference numbers which in each of the'flgures refer to the same parts.
1 indicates the cover of thebox. The cover of the box is provided with a flange' 2 which extends downward from the top. The flange 2 is provided with a contact surface 3 which presses tightly against the contact surface 4 located near and along the upper edge of the box. The cover 1 is provided with a right an gular flange 5 which is located at thelower edge of the flange 2. This flange 5 extends all around the box and'isloc-ated just below the contact surface 3. The flange 5 greatly strengthens the cover and prevents bending of the'flange and thus keeps it in close contact with the body of the box. 1
'6 is the body of the box. It is provided with a bead 7. The lower half 8 of the head 7 is circular in cross-section forming an angle substantially of ninety degrees. The upper part 9 of the beading 7 is inclined and extends upward to the contact surface 4 and in proximity to the right-an ular flange 5 when the cover is placed on t e box. This formsa V-shaped space between the flange 5 of the cover and the inclined or conical surface of v the beadin 9 located on the body of the box.-
The vbea ing and the right-angular flange may be used to open the box. The right angular flange givessurface to operate on while the beading is'of such a shape that it will permit the cover to be removed by simply forcing an instrument diametrically into the V- shaped space and which is structurally formed so that the cover may be pried off without bending or injuring. the beading when used as a fulcrum.
' 'In Fig. 2 I have illustrated the method of removing the coverfrom the box when, it iswedged off. Any instrument having a dull.
oint or edge or a square end and yet which is not too large to fit in between the edge of the flan e 5 and the lower edge of the surface 9 of.
the coding may be used. I have illustrated a device 10 having a square end. The back of a knife or other device maybe used. The device 10 is placed between the .two surfaces and is then pushed inward between the flange 5 and the inclined surface and the cover is pushed u ward'as the device 10 moves along the 1n- 0 med lane, 91' The surface 8 is of such a- .sha 'e t at i't greatIy strengthens the beading surface of the heading "and the device is pressed downward usingthe lower .edge of the inclined surfacerwhere it meets wit and isstrengthened by thecircular surface 'ofthe beading as a fulcrum.
The invention maybe inodified by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit thereof. Flanges ofdifferent shapes and forms and headings of different shapes and forms can be used to permit opening withontde 'arting frornthe essence of the invention. he beading ma be placed on the cover of the box and the ange on the body of the box or the flange may be inclined and v tightly around the outside of the body of the box and the other portion of the saidflange an inclined or horizontal surface located in proximity thereto may be used on the body 1 of the'box without avoiding fny invention.
What I claim 'as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows 1. 'In a sheet metal stamped box the com-' of the box,
bination of a cover and the bod the cover havmg a flange conslsting of two portions, one of said portions adapted to fit V extending outward and at angles to the the first mentioned portion, ody of the box having an enlarged portion, the said enlarged portion having aninclined surface, the up or edge of the said inclined surface adapte to make contactwgith the first mentioned portions of the said ange and to limit the osition of the cove on the box, the sai enlarged portion also having a circular crosssection of ninety degrees whereby the lower edge of the said inclined'portion isvstrengthened.
2. In a box the combination of a cover and I the body of thebox, the cover having-a flange consisting oftw'o portions, one of said portions adapted to tightly, fit around theoutside of the bod of the box and the other portion of the sai flange extending outward and at right angles to the fir st mentioned portion, the body of the box, having an enlarged portion, the said enlargedportion having a conical surface extending from the outer edge of the said enlarged portion inward and upward to the body portion of the box and a rounded surface havlng a cross-section of substan- .tially degrees extending from the lower edge of the said conical surface to the body portion, the upper edge of the said conical' surface adapte to limit the position of the cover on the said box, the said conical surface adapted to form a V shaped s ace with the right angular portion of the sair flange.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name tothis specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. FRANK H.- G. MORSE. Witnesses:
ROBERT BERTRAM CAPON, FRANK P. THAYER.
