Letters Patent No. 91,637, dated June 22, 1869; antedatcd .Time 11, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN CURRY-COMB'S.
the city of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement-iii the Curry-Comb; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in whieh- Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section, and
Figure 2, a plan View ot' the said improved implement.
Like letters of reference indicate the same par-ts when in `both figures. y i
The object ofmy improvement is' to aord a better command of theimplenient while using it, and, als, to enable the operator to use it with more eiiiciency and facility for the to the horse. x
`My invention :consists in dispensing with' the long wooden handle, projecting from one edge of'- the back of the curry-comb as heretofore, by the application of .a loop of leather,-or other'similar strong, flexible material, to acircular plate of sheet-metal, or its equiva. lent, Asecured so that it `can be rotated freely in a corresponding opening in the cent-re of the back of the curry-comb, substantially as hereinafter described.'`
Referring to the drawings- A B is the back ofthe curry-comb;
C, 'the loop of leather; and. D, the circuiar plate of sheet-metal.
The drawings represent the implement in full size.
A round hole, about twoand a half-inches in diameter, is made through the middle of the back A B, and the edge -of the plate then raised so as to produce a halfbead, a', around the said hole, and thus afford a circular or annular recess beneath it, for the reception of the edge of the circular plate I), which is made concavo-convex, and of such a diameter as will cause or allow it to it loosely in contact with the under side of the raised edge a', when lapplied from theV under side of the back A '13, as represented in the drawings.
The loop C consists of a strip, about two and a quarter inches wide, of band-leather, or its equivalent, fastened by rivets c c c', or otherwise, through its lap ping ends, across the middle of the upper or convex side ofthe circular plate D, so as to produce a .loop which will readily admit the palm of the operato1"s or holders hand. (See iig. 2.)
The teeth-plates of the implement are applied in the' usual manner, and those directly beneath the circular plate D, when the latter is in place, support and keep it in its proper position in the recess a', and so purpose, and with less annoyance asV to permit the back, together with all its teethplates, to be easily rotatedon the said plate D;
The usual knock-bar b is riveted fast tothe back` A B, with the'central or middle teeth-plate b" bethe animal about the joints and other bony parts, be-
cause, when the palm of th operators hand is within the loop C, the ends ofhis ugers and thumb, and the rear portion of the palm of his hand will rest directly upon the back of the-comu and thus enable him to either turn the same with perfect facility in any required direction around the circular plate D, or to prevent it from being turned whileusing it; and the curry-comb being always in contact with the under side of' his hand, he can feel exactly the degree of lpressure with which the comb is 'applied to the animal, and can, therefor-@better modify the pressure, and more accurately, guide the comb over`and around the joints and other protuberauces and cavities, for the same reason that sand or elnerylpaper, when directly under the hand or fingers of the cabinet-maker, or the hand scrub-brush grasped by the hand of the usen-affords b etter facilities for using it properly over rounded projections and in small cavities, than if the same implement were held by a stein-handle,
"projecting therefrom, asin the oldV curry-comb.
I am aware that fa loop for the hand has been applied to a curry-comb, but'V the application was made by fixing it rigidly anddirectly to the back, and therefore not permitting the changes in the direction ofthe motion ofthe teethbars, as are constantly required to prevent injury to the animal, without inconveniently changing the direction of the motion of the operators hand.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
'lhe loop C and plate 'D, in combination with the back A B of a curry-comb, the said parts'being constructed and arranged to operate together, substantially as and for the purpose described.
