Letters Patent No. 89,142, dated April 20, 1869.
t Mah- IldPROVEMEN-T IN BLOTTING-PADS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent; and making part of the same.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be itknown that LPETER GORsLrNE,of Elizabeth, Union county, New Jersey, have inventeda new and improved Blotting-Pad and Hand-Rest; and I do hereby declare .that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents a plan or top view of my improved blotting-pad and hand-rest.
Figure 2 is a side viewof the same.

This invention relates to a new apparatus which is to be attached to the hand of a writer, and which will forma convenient baud-rest, and act asia blotter.
The invention consists in the combination, with a plate for holding them, of a strap and of a blottingpad, all arranged and operating as hereinafter more fully described.
A, in the drawing, represents a plate, made of sheetmetal, or other suitable material, of suitable form and size. Its edges are, on two opposite sides, turned down', to form hooks, a a, by which afblotting-pad, B, or a series of such pads, can be conveniently held.
0 is a strap, made of elastic material, and endless,A
or of leather or other suitable material and provided with buckles, or other fastening-devices, if not made i endless. It is iitted between the plate A and pads B, so that it can be conveniently placed around the hand of the writer, to hold the plate and pads under the palm of the hand, as indicated in fig. 2.
The plate A may be notched where the strap fits around its' edge, to more securely hold the same in place, and to preventit from slipping, as at b, in fig.1.
This device, when applied as shown, will form a convenient hand-rest for the writer, and can at any time be used as a blotting-pad, without requiring the pen to be put away when the pad is to be used. It will be of great use in banking-houses, and wherever blot'- ting-pads are frequently used. v
The pad, or pads can readily be withdrawn and reversed, orreplaced in the plate A.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new,and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, a combined blotting-pad and hand-rest,` made substantially as herein shown and described.
