DISPLAY-B OX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 3, 1908.
Application filed A t 17. 1907. Serial No. 388986- To all whom it may concern:
but of ornamental design with its edge Be it known that I, ADOLPH SOMMER, of flanged at d for strength and if desired this Cambridge, county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Display-Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the figures and letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to boxes designed to display the contents in an attractive manner in connection with advertising or descriptive matter calculated to attract or arrest the attention of possible purchasers.
The display box of the present invention is designed to be supported on a show case or counter in an inclined position with a display frame or cover extended above the same, also in an inclined position and adapted for the re ception of attractive advertising matter in the form of a card or sheet which maybe readily inserted or removed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box embodying the present improvements disposed in display position. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the same.
The body or tray A of the box is preferably made of sheet metal of rectangular form but relatively shallow and with its edge beaded at a to present a finished appearance as well as to stiffen the box when made of very light metal.
Upon the bottom or back of the box is a support B preferably of wire having its ends held in a clip I) on the box to swing away from the box or open out like an easel support. Outward movement may be limited by any desired stop although a string or flexible connection C attached at one end to the support and at the other to an eye 0 on the box is preferably employed.
To the upper edge wall of the box there is hinged an open display frame D also formed of sheet metal doubled into U-shape at sides and bottom as indicated at d to form channels for a display card or sheet E which may be slipped in from the top where the side channels are open.
The top part of the frame is preferably flat flat portion may have appropriate perma nent display matter in the form of transparent lettering therein as shown at E.
The frame is hin ed on an axis somewhat removed from its e ge in order that said rear edge may contact with the top side of the box body and thereby limit the opening movement of the frame or form a support to hold the same in its inclined position. The hinge connection shown embodies eyes F secured in the side wall of the box at the ends and eyes G on the front of the frame near its inner edge and cooperating with the eyes on the box. The eyes are so located that the frame or cover may turn down over the box without leaving a'space between them and at the same time when turned up into exhibiting position the edge of the frame drops well behind the edge of the box and in rear of its axis.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A display box embodying a rectangular box body, a support hinged to the bottom of the box body for supporting the same in an inclined position; and a display frame hinged to the upper side of the box body on an axis removed from the edge of the frame, whereby said edge forms a stop to support the frame in an inclined position, said frame having edge channels for the reception of a removable display card or sheet; substantially as described.
2. A display box embodying a rectangular box body, a support hinged to the bottom of the box body for supporting the same in an inclined position, and an open display frame hinged to the upper side of the box and adapted to occupy an inclined display position above the box, said frame having U- shaped edge channels at the sides and bottom for the reception of adisplay card and a flat field at the top with permanent advertising matter within it, the edge of said flat portion being flanged to stifien the frame.
ADOLPH SOMMER.
