B. SCHROTENBOER ,328
BOX PICTURE FRAME Filed Aug. 8. 1932 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 7 IN VENTOR 'am in dcbro/enbozr BY k pw *M A TTORNE Y5 Patented Dec. 19, 1933 UNITED, STATES PATENT orrlcs 5 Claims.
The objects of this invention are: First, to provide a novel box for packaging various articles such as candy, stationery, or the like, which box can be used by the seller for a display and later used by the purchaser as a picture frame.
Second, to provide such a box in which the tray used to hold the contents of the box may be reversed for use as a backing for the picture when the box is used as a picture frame.
Third, to provide such a box that is simple in construction, attractive in appearance, and may be cheaply made.
Further objects and advantages of construction and operation will appear from the description to follow. A preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
a Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my box picture 20 frame. V
Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing my box used as a picture frame.
Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation taken on line 33 of Figs. 1 and 4 showing my box used for candy.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on line 44 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view on line 55 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 6 is a sectional view in perspective of my box used as a picture frame, showing the arrangement of the tray.
' Fig. 7 is a back View of the cover of my box.
Fig. 8 is a View of the box member.
Fig. 9 is a view of the inner frame.
Fig. 10 is a view of the blank used for making the cover.
The parts will be identified by their numerals of reference which are the same in all the views. 10 1 is my novel box picture frame. 2 is a box .member. 3 is an easel that may be stitched on the back thereof in the usual manner or may be integral with, or cut out of box member 2. 4 is a ring that may be used for hanging the box on the wall when it is used as a picture frame. The box and cover are preferably made of card board but may be made of any thin material. 5 is the cover having therein a picture display opening 6. '7 is an inner frame that fits within 56 the cover and forms a border in the picture display opening. The cover 5 is closed on three of its sides by the sides 8 and the back has flanges 9 to surround the box member 3 to hold it in position. One side of the cover is open as at 10 so that the box 3 may be slid into the cover.
11 is a tray in which the contents of the box may be placed. The tray 11 fits within the box member 3, as illustrated, and is adapted to be reversed as shown in Fig. 6 to formthe backing for a picture when the box is used as a picture frame. When the box is used as a frame, the picture is placed on the back of the tray which is reversed in the box and if desired a glass 12 may be placed over the picture which is shown at 13. The glass fits within the box member 3 and is held in place in the box 3 which is then slid into the cover 5.
The cover 5 is formed of a blank 14 of cardboard. A central panel 15 having the picture opening 6 therein is provided with the three panels 8 and the blank is scored as at 16 so that the panels 8 may be folded back'to form the sides of the cover. A panel 17 depends from the central panel 8 to form a back flange on the cover and scoring as at 18 makes it possible to bend the flange. Side panels 19 extend from the side panels 8 with scoring as at 20 so that the panels 19 may be bent back to form a portion of the flange. The panels 19 are shorter than the side panels 8, leaving a cut out portion as at 21 to receive the panel 17. When the panels are folded back a very solid structure is obtained that can be held in position with kraft paper adhesive tape.
To provide a box of attractive appearance, the box member 3 is tight-wrapped with a paper which can be a leatherette, gilt or other attractive covering paper. The inside frame is edged with some attractive covering paper and is then placed in the cover 5. The cover 5 is also tight-wrapped with a cover paper similar to that used on the box member.
My improved box can be used for candy or stationery or for any other merchandise. The cover opening may have a Cellophane or other transparent sheet thereacross, or the box member or the tray maybe wrapped in Cellophane to display the contents of the box. The easel on the back of the box may be used to set it up for display purposes as well as when the b is used as a picture frame by the purchaser.
I have described my invention in the form preferred by me, but wish to claim the same broadly as well as specifically, as pointed out in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A cardboard box adapted to be used as a picture frame, comprising a box member, an 11f easel thereon, a sliding cover embracing the top and three sides of the box member and having a picture display opening therein, and a tray fitted within said box member and adapted to hold the contents of said box and to be reversed to form a backing for a picture.
2. A box adapted to be used as a picture frame, comprising a box member, a sliding cover having a picture display opening therein, and a tray fitted within said box member and adapted to hold the contents of said box and to be reversed to form a backing for a picture when the box is used as a picture frame.
3. A box adapted to be used as a picture frame, comprising a box member, a cover having a picture display opening therein, and a tray fitted within said box member and adapted to hold the contents of said box and to be reversed to form a backing for a picture when the box is used as a picture frame.
4. A cardboard box adapted to be used as a picture frame comprising a box member, a sliding cover having a picture display opening therein and having sides embracing three sides of the box member, said sides having flanges thereon embracing the bottom of the box member, and a tray fitted within said box member and adapted to hold the contents of said box and to be reversed to form a backing for a picture when the box is used as a picture frame.
5. A cardboard box adapted to be used as a picture frame, comprising a box member, a sliding cover embracing the top and three sides of the box member and having a picture display opening therein, and a tray fitted within said box member and adapted to hold the contents of said box and to be reversed to form a backing for a picture.
