-SPECIIEILA'II'IION forming part of Letters Patent No. 758,109, dated April. 26, 1904.
l Application lefl October l, 1903.
Improvements in Tooth Brushes, of which.
the following is a full, clear, and exact speciiication, reference being had to the accom-v panying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The object of my invention is to provide or produce a simple, compact, and eflicient brush with no angles or projecting parts to interfere with its convenient use inthe mouth and so constructed that it will reach and cleanse all the teeth and easily enter between teeth which may be separated.
To accomplish this object and to secure other and further advantages in the matters of construction, operation, and use, my improvements involve certain new and useful arrangements or combinations of parts and details of construction, all of which will be herein iirst fully described and then pointed out in the claims;
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is aplan or top view, and Fig. 2 a corresponding side eleand C the bristles mounted in thehead.
vation, of a brush constructed and arranged for operation in accordance with my invention and involving my improvements, the handle being shown as made separate from the head and afterward to be connected therewith. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation on the line 3 3 0f Fig. 4, on a larger scale than previous figures, showing the brush-head and its handle separated therefrom. Fig. 4 is a top View corresponding with. Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a top view of the brush-head made without a handle. Fig. 6 is a top view of a modication showing the brush head and handle made in one piece.
In all the figures like letters of reference Wherever they occur indicate corresponding parts.
A is the brush-head, B the handle therefor, The head is made in the form of a fiat complete annulus or ring of short diameter, so that it TOOTH-BRUSH.
semina. 175,272. (naman.)
may be conveniently used in any part of the mouth. The bristles, as shown, are mounted in double rows, so as to aford abundant cleaning capacity, and they are secured in the head in any preferred manner. By preference the handle is made separate from Athe head and easily detachable, as indicatedrrat Figs. l, 2, and 3. The connection between these two parts may be made in any suitable manner; but I prefer to employ a screw-joint. For this I supply the .head with a threaded socket a and the handle with a screw which may be easily turned into or out of the socket, as may be required. This makes a simple and feliable joint and answers all the purposes of onemore complicated.
As shown, the brush has an unobstructed opening through its central part. This enables the brush to. be applied to any or all portions of the teeth and especially over or around and between teeth which may be standing alone or around and between crowns or other work which may be located in the mouth.
By making the handle removable the brush is rendered capable of being twisted or turned in the mouth by the application of the ngers, as may be desired when there are dicult places to reach. p
Obviously the ring-shaped brush might be made without a handle, as indicated at A in Fig. 5, and again it might be made with a permanent handle, as indicated at B in Fig. 6. These modifications are entirely within the scope of my invention.
The ring-shaped brush in addition to the advantages above indicated possesses the further advantages that it confines a'portion of the cleansing liquid to the central part, s0 that the liquid may be employed to better advantage than in other forms, and it presents a smooth and unbroken part always for contact with the mouth, the same when the brush is held in one position as in another. The unobstructed central opening constitutes a kind of a reservoir in which the cleansing liquid is retained in a degree during the use .of the. brush, and it further affords facilities for thoroughly cleaning and drying the brush.
Having now fully described my invention,
IOO
what I claim as new therein, and' desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-M 1. A tooth-brush made in annular or ring form and having the central unobstructed passage-Way through it and having its bristles extending parallel With the peripheral face of said ring, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In combination With an annular toothbrush head having a central unobstructed passage through it and a threaded socket, formed in its periphery, and'bristles extending from one face of the head parallel with its axial line, of a removable handle provided With a screw to t Said socket, substantially as shown and I5 described.
In testimony thatI claim the invention above set forth I alix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
H. EDWIN SANDIFORD.
