PETER SVAN, NORTHBEND, NEBRASKA.
BOOK-MARK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 718,291, dated January 13, 1903.
Application iiled May 4, 1901. Serial No. 58.798. (No model.)
T0 al?, whom it may concern/.-
Be it known that I, PETER SWAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Northbend, (whose post-office address is Parsonage United Presbyterian Church, Northbend,) in the county of Dodge and State of Nebraska, have invented new and useful Improvements in Book-Marks, of which the following is a speciiication. y
This invention relates to book-marks, and more particularly to a book-mark which is designed to locate the particular place upon a page or leaf in a book.
This invention is found useful to the student in holding places of reference, and it is particularly useful in the delivery of a public address or in giving av Bible-reading where numerous quotations are to be made. The primary object thereof is to provide a simple and convenient construction of book-mark which will instantly designate the line or paragraph upon the page, as Well as the pageitself.
The peculiar construction embodied in my device will be clearly described in the following description and defined in the claim hereto annexed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 designates a page of a book to which my invention is applied. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the book-mark. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through the same. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the book-mark inverted.
Referring more particularly to the'drawings, the numerals l and 2 designate the members of the book-mark. The said members comprise elongated blades, at the ends of which are outwardly-projecting inclined extensions 3, terminating in laterally-extending and outwardly-inclined finger-pieces 4 and 4a. The finger-piece 4 is in the form of a disk, and finger-piece 4a is oblong in form, so as to be readily distinguishable.
At or contiguous to the juncture of the finger-pieces 4 and 4 and the inclined extensions 3 are right-angularly-projecting hinged lugs or lips 5. Those on the member 2 are adapted to rest Within the lugs or lips on the member 1 and are hinged thereto bya pivotpin 6, extending entirely through said lugs.
A coil-spring 7 is arranged so that the convolutes thereof surround said pin and the terminating ends bear against the insides of the finger-pieces on the members 1 and 2, respectively. This will cause the blades of the Vare to be presented.
that the blades consist of elongated strips when the device is applied to the page the line will be clearly indicated, as will be seen by reference to Fig. 1,`and by the peculiar construction of the tinger-pieces 4 and 4a the side of the page upon which is the particular place to be referred to is instantly designated by determining before using the said mark which finger-piece is to designate the side of the page upon which is the particular place to be referred to. A plurality of these devices maybe utilized by a minister in giving a Bible-reading when a number of passages For a public speaker these devices may be used for the same object in connection with one or more books.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I provide a cheap, durable, and efficient bookmark Which will be readily applicable to a plurality of uses and one which will readily perform the services for which it is intended. Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A book-mark comprising members having other and provided with outer terminal curved pointed ends, the inner ends of the members being bent rearwardly upward and rearwardlyodownward respectively in reverse inclined directions, and extensions formed in rear of said inclines having vertical perforated lips on opposite sides thereof, a pin -for pivotallysecuring said lips together, a coiled spring on said pin having laterally-extended ends, and the fingers formed in rear of said extensions to coact with the lateral ends of said spring so as to operate the blades, said fingers being constructed of dierent shapes, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
