Description

Oct. 24, 1950 G. J. PIERCE MAGNTTYTNG ATTACHMENT Foa Booxs Filed March 5, 1948 INVENTOR.
C'eviruce c Euere@ ATTE R N EYS Patented Oct. 24, 1950 UNITED STATES ENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
My present invention relates to an improved magnifying attachment for books and generally comprises a magnifying lens mounted in a suitable frame to which is attached at one end thereof a spring clamp for securing the ira-me to a 'page oi a book or magazine or other printed or Iwritten :nati-er so that it may be easily slid'iroin top to bottom oi the page or sheet as the matter is read.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one complete example of the physical ein bodiment of my invention according te the vst mode I have thus far devised, but it vill be under-- stood that Various changes and alterations may be made in the exemplified structure within the scope oi the appended claim.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view oi the attachment oi' my invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view at line S13-. oi Fig'. 2.
4 is a sectional view at line i-i of Fig. l.
Referring now to the drawings wherein I have illustrated the present preferred embodiment of my invention, I employ an elongate magnifying lens or" plastic preferably but which may be made of glass ii desired, having a convex upper face i. and plane lower face 4, with tapered ends ii and S.
This lens, generally of rectangular shape, is secured in the angular groove le of the frame l2 and the lower face of the lens is spaced from the under surface of the frame so that the lens will be spaced from the reading matter.
At one end of the frame, in the slot id I secure the iiXed jaw of the clamp section 55 of angular shape and the cylindrical and resilient tube i8 split at 2@ is mounted by means or" slots 22-24 on this section. In slots ES-ZS, is secured the opposing clamp section or jaw 3Q of angular shape and having an extension 32 extending under the end section of the frame.
It will be apparent that by compressing together the clamp sections, the extension 32 will be spaced from the frame against the tension of the tube, and the frame and lens may be located on the paper or sheet 3F; of bool; and the extension under the sheet will clamp the sheet between the extension and the frame.
Thus the lens will be releasably retained in the selected position and may be easily moved along the edge of the sheet by releasing the clamp sections.
I-laving thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters iratent is:
In a rnagniiyinsY reading attachment, the combination which comprises a flat frame having an angular groove in the inner peripheral edge, a magnifying lens mounted in said frame ywith the edge thereof conforming to and positioned in the said groove so that the face of the lens extends beyond the face of the frame, and a spring clamp having a pair of gripping jaws with outwardly extended handles and a spring for urging the said gripping jaws together, one of said jaws fiXedly attached to said Jdat frame at one end thereof and the other of said jaws positioned to engage the bottom surface of edge of the frame to which the rst jaw is xed to temporarily secure the said frame on an edge of a sheet of material whereby the frame positions the magnifying lens aaginst the surface of the said sheet or" material te enlarge indicia thereon.
