Description

ALCIBIADES J, WHITTIER, OF ROXBURY, MSSACHUSETTS. Letters .Patent No. 68,326, dated August 27, 1867.
dite Sdgzhule referat it in ilgrst rtttrs nteut mit making pint at Hure 5mm.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, ALCIBIADES J. WHITTIER, of Roxbury, in the county of Norfolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful improvements in l\IosquitoBars or Window Screens, of which thefollowing is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specicatiomin which- Figure lis a front elevation of a window, with the lower sash raised, and one of my improved screens unrolled between the lower edge of the sash and the window-sill.
Figure 2 is a similar front elevation, with the screen rolled up, and the sash lowered.
Figure 3 is a transverse section of g. I.
Figure 4 is a transverse section of iig. 2.
Figure 5 is a horizontal plane section on the line AB of iig. 1.
Figure 6 is a. central longitudinal section of the self-winding roll4 detached, and which takes up the screen when the sash is lowered. The springf, connected with the tube e and the shaft E, operates the roll in winding.
Figure 7 is a transverse section of the tube, shaft, and spring connected.
In this invention one end of the fabric of which the screen A is composed .is fastened to a bar, B, which rests on the sill C, and is secured to` the pulley-Stiles D by sliding-bolts a, which are fastened to the bar B, and enter the stiles; and the other end of the screen A is fastened to the self-winding roll F,`the central shaft E of which is held rmly in the plates b, shown in g. 6, at each end of the roll. One end of the spring f is`con nected with the tube c, and the other end to the shaft E of the roll. The tube e and heads e revolve on -the `shaft E. A hook, d, applied to bar g, is turned by a thumb piece, 71, to hook over a pin, a, in therail of the sash, and connect the sash with the rolling-screen.
By releasing the hook d, and withdrawing the bolts a, the rolling-screen may be easily removed, and it may be as easily connected by placing the bar B on the sill C, and sliding the bolts into holes in the stiles D, and by turning the hook to engage with the pin n in the sash. My improved roller-screeny may be applied above the top sash in the same manner as below the lower sash. Raising the lower sash unro'lls the screen, and the sash may be held up by any suitable window fastening. When the sash is .lowered or closed the screen A winds on to the self-acting roll.
This improved self-rolling window-screen and mosquito-bar is intended to be used'for the same purposes that other window-screens or mosquito-bars are used for. It is quite as wcll adapted to large windows as to small ones. It is easily connected or disconnected, and is portable, for transportation, sale, or use, or, when not in use, to pack in small space for safe keeping.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isi The hook d and the bolts a, or their equivalent, when applied and arranged for operation substantially as and for the purpose set forth. A
