ADJUSTABLE CASE-REST FOR PRINTERS CABINETS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 56 5,274, dated August 4, 1896.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. HURREL, of Bloomdale, in the county of Wood and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Adjustable Case-Rest for Printers Cabinets and Racks, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description.

The object of the invention is to so construct a case-rest that it will afford a convenient and ready support for any case in a cabinet or rack, and whereby the case may be pulled out clear from the cabinet or rack, giving free access to all boxes in the case.

A further object of the invention is to impart the proper slant to the rest for the compositor at the case, and to provide a quick and convenient vertical adjustment of the rest, enabling any case in a cabinet or rack to be brought up or down to a convenient height for setting type from it, thereby relieving the compositor from a stooping position when using the bottom case, or stretching upward to reach a top one.

Another object of the invention is to construct the rest in such manner that when not needed it may be quickly removed from the rack or cabinet, enabling the latter to be readily moved to widen the passage around them.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth,and pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the im proved rest in position to receive the case. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of an arm of the improved rest, viewed from the inner side, and a standard upon which the arm is supported; and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the arm shown in Fig. 2 and a horizontal section through the standard.

In carrying out the invention two standards A are employed, and an arm B is used in connection with each standard, the two arms being connected by a cross-bar O, ordinarily at or near their centers. The standards A are provided in each side face with a channel 10, usually U-shaped in cross-section, and upon the front face of each standard offsets Serial No. 591,072. (No model.)

11 are formed or attached, the upperfaces of the said offsets being flat and their front faces inclined in direction of the standard, and where the two surfaces of the offsets meet the front edge is chamfered, as shown in Fig. 1.

Each arm Bis widened at its inner end, and in the said widened portion of each arm a T-slot 12 is produced, the shank of the slot extending through to the heel of the arm, and the width of the shank portion of the said slot is such as to receive the body or shank portion of an upright, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The head portion of the slot 12 is adapted to receive the front upright member of a standard, but is wider than the depth of the said member, so much so that when an arm, after having been placed upon the standard, is brought to a horizontal position or at right angles to the standard the arm may be moved upward or downward freely on the standard, since the width of the head portion of the slot will be sufficient to also receive the offsets 11. In the inner side edge of each arm a longitudinal groove or recess 13 is made, and the inner end portions 14 of the said grooves are beveled or curved, as shown in Fig. 2. The recesses 13 extend through the heel portions of the arms, but stop short of their outer or forward ends, terminating in a vertical wall 15.

The standards A are secured in any'suitable or approved manner to the side posts 16 of a printers cabinet or rack, and after the arms of the rest have been adjusted so as to be brought in position to receive a particular case they are permitted to drop, assuming a downwardly-inclined position, as shown in Fig. 1, which position is convenient for the compositor, and the arms will at that time rest upon one of the offsets 11. The case may now be drawn outward from the cabinet or rack upon the recessed portions 13 of the arms B, the beveled inner ends of these recessed portions ofiering no resistance to the passage of the case, and when the case has been brought out sufficiently far to strike the front walls 15 of the arms each and every box in the case may be readily reached by the compositor. The arms or uprights may be made of any desired length or of any suitable material.

When the arms are not needed, they are simply raised upward and removed from the standards, thus leaving the cabinet free and the passage between cabinets comparatively unobstructed. Two or more sets of arms may be used on one cabinet when using two or more cases at a time. On certain double or triple case cabinets and racks one or two uprights might be dispensed with by using the middle upright for the right or left support of the sliding arms 13.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A case-rest consisting of standards having ofisets upon their front faces and channeled sides, and arms adapted to receive a case, having their inner ends slotted to receive the forward channeled portions of the,

standards, the cross members of the slots being of sufficient width to enable the saidarms to pass the offsets on the standards when the arms are held in a horizontal position, as and for the purposespecified.

2. A case-rest for, printers use, consisting of standards adapted for attachment to the posts of a cabinet orrack, the said standards beingprovided with channeled sides and with offsets on their forward faces, and armsprovided with substantially T-shaped slots at their inner ends, whereby they may be slipped over the said standards, the head or transverse members of the said slots being of sufficient width to clear the offsets onthe standards when the arms are in a horizontal position, each arm being provided with a longitudinal recess upon its innerface, forming a slideway for a case, as and for the purpose specified.

' being provided with channeledsides and with offsets 011 their forward faces, and arms proa transverse members of the said slots being of sufficient width to clear the offsets on the standards when the arms are in a horizontal position, each arm being provided with a 1ongitudinal recess upon its inner face, forming a slideway for the case, the outer end of each slideway terminating in a Vertical wall and the inner end of .each slideway terminating at the inner end of the arm to which it belongs, at which point the said slideways are beveled, wh'ereby the case drawn from a cabi- -net to which the device is attached will not meet with obstructions when drawn upon the slideways of the aforesaid arms, as and for 1 the purpose specified.

4. A case-rest for printers cabinets .or racks, consisting of standards adapted for attachment to the uprights of the cabinet or 1 rack, having channeled sides and offsets upon their front faces, the said offsets having flat upper surfaces and downwardly beveled front faces, connected arms adapted to slide upon the said; standards, each arm being provided with a T'-slot at its inner end, the transjverse member whereof is of such width that iwhen the arms are held in a horizontal position they may be passed over the said offsets, each arm being provided with a slideway upon its inner face to receive a case, the said recesses being stopped short of the outer ends of the aforesaid arms, as and for the WVILLIAM A.
