UNITED STATES PATENT Fries.
JAMES M. HELTSLEY, OF CLIFTY, KENTUCKY.
CHURN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 393,069, dated November 20, 1888.
Application filed March 29, 1888.
To all whom it mayconcern:
Be it known that I, JAMEs M. HELTsLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clifty, in the county of Todd and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Churns; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains tovmake and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention has relation to improvements in churns; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.-
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side view of the churn and churn-dasher, and Fig. 4 is a section of the churn and its dasher.
Referring to the drawings, the letter A represents the platform of my improvement,
having erected thereon at suitable distances apart four posts or uprights, a, provided with side braces, b, arranged one above the other, for a purpose to be presently eX- plained. To the front posts are secured crosspieces 0 0, also arranged one above the other, and having bearings d d, in which the upper part, B, of the dasher-rod is adapted to have vertical play. The rear posts of the machine are provided with a crosspiece, e, having a bearing, f.
Mounted at or about midway of the braces b are the cross pieces 9 g, one above the other, the pieceg being provided with bearings h h.
The letter O designates ashaft held in abearing, h", on the cross-piece g, and a bearing, g", on the upper surface of the front brace, a. This shaft is provided with a small and large gear-wheel, K k, and with a wrist, D, having the upper end of a rod, 0 pivoted thereto,
the lower end of said rod being pivoted to the upper end ofthe dasher-rod B.
The letter E denotes a shaft mounted in the bearings of the cross-pieces e and said shaft being provided with a gear-wheel, I, which meshes with the small gear-wheel k on the shaft 0. In the bearings of the cross- Serial No. 268,839. (No model.)
pieces 9 and a is mounted another shaft, F, having a fly-wheel, F, and a small gearwheel, m, said small gear-wheel meshing with the large gear-wheel on the shaft 0. The outer end of the shaft E is provided with a crank, L, whereby the machine may be operated; or I may use a band-wheel on said shaft to be operated by any-well-known means.
The lower end of the upper part of the dasher-rod B is provided with a collar, 19, having a headed screw, 12, by means of which the upper end of the lower part of the dasher-rod is detachably connected to said collar.
The platform A is provided with a circular opening, Z, in which the bottom of the churn G is seated to prevent displacement of the same when the machine is in operation. A'
dasher, s, is secured to the lower end of the dasher-rod, said dasher-rod passing through an opening in the cover of the churn. The cover of the churn is made of tin, with a wooden piece, N, inclosed within the flange of the cover and having a dished upper surface, and around the opening of the cover is a flaring mouth, Z, whereby the cream on the dasher-rod is prevented from escaping therefrom as it passes down on thedished surface of the wooden piece N, and thence through the opening therein and into the churningvessel.
The operation of the machine will be readily understood from the foregoing description.
What I claim is- The churn mechanism herein described, consisting of the platform with uprights a and opening Z, the side pieces, b, front pieces, a a c c, and rear piece, 6, the cross-pieces g 9, connected to said side pieces, I), the independent shafts E F, mounted in bearings of the pieces a? g e, said shaft E having gearwheel I, and shaft F having fly-wheel F and gear m, the shaft' 0, provided with gearwheels K L and Wrist D, the dasher-rod, and the rod 0 pivoted to the wrist D and to the dasher-rod, said dasher-rod operating in bearings on the pieces a 0, substantially as de scribed.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES M. HELTSLEY.
