UNirE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID CONOVEB, OF MOUNT VERNON, INDIANA.
CHURN.
SPECIFICATION' forming part of Letters Patent No. 325,238, dated September 1, 1885.
Application filed October 22, 1884.
T0 all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, Dlivin CoNovER, a cilizen of the United States, residing at Mount Vernon, in the county of Posey and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chnrns, of which the following is a speciiication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in rotary churns, and has for its objects to furnish a churn which can be operated with compara tively small motive power, and which will thoroughly break up the oil-globules of the milk. These objects are attained by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which v Figure l is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a ver tical section. Fig. 3 is a plan of the churn with the cover removed.
The letter A indicates the frame of the machine; A, the base thereof supported by short legs A. The frame A is attached to the base A in any convenient manner, and is steadied by means of the braces a. Attached to the base A are strips of wood or metal, a', upon which the body of Ithe churn is supported a short distance above the base. A piece of board, a, having a crescent-shaped opening, a', is attached to the frame A. rIhc opening a' partly surrounds the body of the churn B, and serves the purpose to steady and hold it in the proper position when placed upon the base A.
Attached to the frame A is a central piece or rib, G, which is slightly enlarged near the top and provided with aslot,C/, and upwardlyprojecting parts c, which form bearings fora shaft, D, having on one end a crank-handle, D, and at the other a spur-wheel, D, which engages with the pinion E, attached to the shaft E, the lower end of which is attached to a wooden dasher, E, having perforations e, and a projecting pin or point, c', at the bottoni, which enters an opening, e, in a wooden strip, F, extending across the bottom of the body of the churn B, and steadied and kept in its proper position by the lugs b, of which there are four.
Secured to the shaft E is a spur-wheel, E, which meshes into the spur-wheel G, attached (No model.)
to a shaft, G, the lower end of which is secured to a dasher, G, similar in every respect to the dasher E, and a bearing for its pin c in one of the openings c in the strip F. The shafts E' and G each have a bearing in the cover or top H of the body of the churn B. This top I-I is composed of two semicircular pieces having openings h, (which forni the bearings of the shafts E and G.) The two semicircular pieces H are secured to each other and maintained in proper position by means of the hooks I. The strip of wood F is easily removed from the body ofthe churn, as it is merely held in place by being placed between the lugs b, the weight of shafts and dashers keeping it down upon the bottom of the churn. It will be readily seen that when the handle D is turned the dashers E G" will be propelled with a rotary motion in opposite directions, and thereby thoroughly break up the oil-globules ofthe milk and quickly turn the same into but-ter.
I desire to observe that it has come lo my knowledge that in churns it is not new to provide a bar which acts to hold the lower ends of the churn dashers, and that pliable arms or guards are tilted against the inner wall of the churirbody to sustain the bar in proper position. I am also aware that in another instance the dashershaft has been iitted in crosspieces merely secured in the bottoni of the churirbody.
Having described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Batent, and claim, is
In a churn, the body B, provided with lugs b, and removable stri p F, having openings c", in combination with pins e', vertical dashers G, having circular perforations c. shafts E G', provided with spurwheels E G, and pinion E, the said removable strip F being ield down by the weight of said pins, dashers, shafts, spur-wheels, and pinions, as described, and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I ai'tix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
D AVI D OONOVER.
