JACOB GAUGH, OE NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
HAT-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part. of Letters Patent No. 307,638, dated November 4, 1884.
Application filed April 15, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JACOB GAUGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New J er sey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Boxes and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked there on,which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to that class of hatboxes, usually made of pasteboard, having straightsides,to enablesaidboxes, whenpackcd in cases for shipping, to engage from top to bottom those laterally adjacent, and thus prevent any disarrangement or movement of said boxes when the case is handled in course of transportation, whereby said boxes or the contents thereof might be damaged.
The object of the invention is to prevent the hats packed in boxes of the class referred to from losing their shape when laid aside for any considerable time; and it consists in the improved hat -b0x constructed and the parts thereof combined substantially as hereinafter set forth, and finally embodied in the clause of the claim. I
Referring to the accompanying drawings,in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts in each of the figures, Figure 1 is a sec tional view of a bandbox having my improvements therein. Fig. 2 is a plan of a support adapted to conform to the rim of the hat, and Fig. 3 is an interior sectional view showing the hat suspended within.
In said drawings, a is the bandbox, and b is the cover for the same. Around the straight vertical sides a of said box, at about midway between the top and bottom edges thereof, and extending at an angle thereto, is a flange, 0, having a central oblong opening therein conforming to and holding in place the body d of a removable hatsupport, which latter is thereby prevented from changing its position laterally in the box. The body of the support is" made cylindrical or approximately cylindrical in shape, as shown, to receive the body of the hat and to rest firmly on the bottom of the box. At the upper edge of said body a the same is provided with a brim, e, curved in correspondence with. the rim of the hat, and thereby adapted to retain the same in proper shape.
The parts of the box being preferably of pasteboard, the same are formed and combined at an inconsiderable cost.
I am aware that hat-boxes like those shown in United States Letters Patent No. 209,691 have been formed to receive the rim of a hat;' but in the cases referred to the boxes have been flanged or an offset has been made in the vertical outline of the box. Such boxes are defective in that they will not readily and securely pack in a case, the offset in the sides of said boxes preventing the samefrom coming together. My box being unfianged or unbroken by the said offset enables the sides from the top to the bottom of the box to engage adjacent boxes of like shape, so that the said box is held rigidly and securely.
I do not wish to be understood as claiming anything shown or described in said Patent N 0. 209,691.
Having thus described theinvention, what I claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The improved hat-box having the straight sides, with a flange, 0, arrangedon the inside thereof, and having a support, all, resting on the bottom of the box and held by flange c, and having a curved rimlying within the said straight sides, said rim being adapted to re ceive the rim of the hat, all substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I I have hereunto set my hand this 4th day of April, 1884.
JACOB GAUOH. .IVitnesses:
OLIVER DRAKE, F. F. CAMPBELL.
