Description

UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
HENRY BRADBURY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOXES FOR PACKING CRACKERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 176,399, dated April 18, 1876; application tiled November 19, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY BRADBURY, of the city and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Boxes for Packing (for shipping) Assorted Cakes, Crackers, and other goods; and I do hereby declare the following to be a clear and exact description of the nature thereof, sufficient to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains. to fully understand, make, and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of the box embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a top view thereof, the cover being opened. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the disk from which the cover and bottom of the box are constructed. Fig. 4 is a top view of the body of the box. Fig. 5 is a sectional view, showing a series of boxes packed in a barrel.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Heretofore cakes, crackers, and similar articles have been packed in barrels; butthe goods become brokenand mixed in transportation, and considerable handling is necessary to remove them and set them in order for inspection and sale.
My invention is designed to remedy these defects; and for this purpose it consists of a packingbox so constructed that two or more boxes are adapted to the shape of a barrel, and will fill the same, whereby the goods therein will be prevented from being broken, crushed, or mixed. They are easily accessible for immediate and assorted sale, and storekeepers will be furnished with show-boxes conveniently shaped for arrangement on shelves.
Referring to the'drawin gs, A represents the body of the box, and B the cover thereof, which is attached thereto by a piece of fabric, 0, constituting a hinge. In the manufacture of the box I form disks D, (see Fig. 3,) the same being circular, and cut the same, so that from each disk there are produced two semicircles, B B. These semicircular pieces will form the bottom B of the body and the cover B. The wall A of the body A is curved,
and its ends are attached to the back E by tongues F, forming part of the wall A or the back E 5 and it will be perceived that the body is of semi-cylindrical form, of which the wall A is the circumference and the back E is the diameter, so that when two bodies are placed back to back they form together a cylinder. The cover B is of semi-cylindrical shape, and is formed with a rim or lap, at, which covers the top edge of the box.
It will be seen that I provide a simple and serviceable box for packing cakes, crackers, and other friable materials, and the boxes are adapted to the cylindrical shape of barrels, kegs, and similar packages. For this purpose I use as many boxes as are required, and place them back to back in the barrel, and they will nearly fill the space of the latter, a light packing of some suitable material being placed in the space, so as to insure the safety of the boxes.
When the barrel reaches its destination the bottom thereof will be removed and the barrel overturned, so that the head is uppermost.
Then raise the barrel, and the boxes stand by themselves, readily accessible for all purposes. The cakes are in condition for immediate sale. The boxes may be placed on the shelves, and they provide conveniently-shaped show-boxes for the cakes, &c., the cover B preventing dust reaching the same. The good condition and assortment of the cakes, 8220., are preserved, for there has been no breaking, crushing, or mixing of the articles during transportation.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, the cake or cracker box, consisting of the semi-cylindrical front A, the straight back E, the connecting-tongues F, the bottom piece 13, the lid B, and flexible hinge (J, said box being adapted to be packed in pairs within a barrel for transportation, as and for the purpose set forth.
HENRY BRADBURY.
