Application May 3, 1957, Serial No. 656,812
2 Claims. (Cl. -327) My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in a bed chair adapted for being positioned to rest upon a mattress so that a person sitting on the mattress will have supports at both sides and the back and front.
The invention is intended particularly for use by those who are confined to bed either temporarily or over a prolonged period of time.
It is an object of the invention to provide a structure which may be easily and quickly assembled about the body of the person while the person is in a sitting position on a bed.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a chair of this class that will be simple in structure, economical of manufacture, durable, compact, and easily and quickly assembled and disassembled.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a chair of this class which, when assembled about the body of the person, may be secured in fixed relation on the mattress of the bed.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
It is recognized that various modifications and changes may be made in the details of the structure illustrated without departing from the invention, and it is intended that the present disclosure shall be considered to be but the preferred embodiment.
Forming a part of this application are the drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the invention showing it resting on a bed;
Fig. 2 is a front elevational view of the invention in assembled form;
Fig. 3 is a side elevational view of the invention in assembled form;
f Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the invention in assembled orm;
Fig. 5 is an elevational view taken on line 5--5 of Fig. 4;
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on line 66 of Fig. 4;
Fig. 7 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on line 77 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 8 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on line 8-8 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 9 is a plan view of the back forming portion of the chair; and
Fig. 10 is a plan view of a tray used with the invention.
As shown in the drawings, the invention comprises a back support 17 having slots 18 formed inwardly from the lower edge thereof. Mounted on the back support adjacent the lower portion thereof, at opposite sides, are side plates or walls 19 and 20, each of which has the outwardly extended arm rest 21. These side plates 19 and 20 slip upwardly in the slots 18 of the back 17. Mounted on the outer face of each of the side plates 19 and 20 is a pair of spaced apart cleats 22 and 23 between which the back 17 engages. As shown in Figs. 1 and 5, these cleats are pivotally mounted by a pin 24 on their upper ends to the side plates 19 or 20, and the lower end of each cleat is held in fixed relation by means of a pin 25 which is adapted to engage in one of the openings 26 formed in the side plate so that the back may be tilted to various positions as shown in Fig. 3.
A front tray 27 is provided with the slots 28 which are adapted to slide over the plates 19 and 20 below the arm rest 21. This tray is provided at the opposite sides with a latch 29 having the angularly turned ends 30 adapted to engage in the recess 31 formed in the outer face of the side plate 19 or 20. In this way, the tray is held in position when placed in assembled form, as shown in Fig. 1.
Formed in each of the side plates 19 and 20 at the forward and rearward ends thereof are openings 32 through which may be projected the flexible cords 33. These cords may then be extended to tie around the legs of the bed 35 while the chair is resting on the mattress 34. In this way, the chair may be securely fastened in fixed relation on the mattress at various positions.
In use, the bed-ridden person would be raised to a sitting position and the side plates 19 and 20 would be positioned at opposite sides. The back 17 would then he slid down while in the assembled form, the cleats being swung to the desired position so that the back will extend straight upwardly or be inclined, as shown in Fig. 3. The tray 27 is then slid forwardly into position. It will thus be seen that the seat or chair is assembled around the person occupying the bed so that lifting of the persons body is thus avoided.
Experience has shown that this chair may be easily and quickly assembled without causing any discomfort to the person in bed and that there is thus provided a means for permitting the person to rest comfortably while in a sitting or reclining position.
What I claim is:
1. In a chair of the class described, a back forming member having a pair of spaced slots extending upwardly from the lower edge thereof; a pair of side plates engaging in said pair of slots and projecting forwardly from said back; a pair of spaced apart cleats on each of said side plates; means for pivotally mounting each pair of cleats on each side plate; means for securing said cleats in different positions of angular adjustment relatively to the respective side plate on which they are mounted, said cleats engaging said back at the opposite edges thereof adjacent the lower portion for retaining said back fixed relatively to said side plates in various adjusted positions;
2. A chair of the class described, comprising: a back forming member having a pair of spaced slots extending upwardly from the lower edge thereof, a pair of side plates engaging in said pair of slots and projecting forwardly from said back; a pair of spaced apart cleats on each of said side plates; means for pivotally mounting each pair of cleats on each side plate; means for securing said cleats in difierent positions of angular adjustment relatively to the respective side plate on which they are mounted, said cleats engaging said back at the opposite edges thereof adjacent the lower portion for retaining said back fixed relatively to said side plates in various adjusted positions; a tray detachably mounted on the forward end of said side plates and spanning the distance between the same; and, an arm rest on the upper edge of each of said side plates.
