In order to provide for the installationpfqthe cap I6 on the body I0 so that the cap can be put on in one position only, one of thel pins, as 2Ia, is positioned slightly below the opposite pin ZI. The correlated slots on the flange I8 are also positioned slightly lower so that the pin Zla is engageable only in the slots that are correlated wth it. In this manner the cap I6 may not be secured to the body Ill in a reversed position.
The top Wall II of the cap I6 is provided with a segmental cluster of perforations or openings 22 which open downwardly into the chamber I5.
3 Another segmental cluster of openings, as 24, are provided in the wall I1, which open into the chamber I4.
In order to provide for dispensing the material from the chambers I4 and I5 selectively, a selector plate 21 is rotatably carriedv by the cap I6. The plate 21 is formed with an upper at wall 28 which overlies the upper wall I1 of the cover I6. Downwardly extendingperipheral flanges 29 are formed on the plate 21 for rotatably engaging about the iianges I8 of the cap I 6. The flange I8 is formed with a peripheral groove 3|! thereabout,
which opens outwardly. The flange 29 of the plate 21 is formed with a correlated annular groove 3| on the inner side thereof, which is adapted to register with the groove 30 when the plate 21 is in its proper position.
For rotatably securing the plate 21 to the cap I6, a spring 32 is engaged in the grooves 30 and 3 I. The spring 32 is formed of resilient wire, bent into a substantial spiral shape.y The inner` end of the spring 32 is formed of a diameter less than the diameter of the groove 30 of the cover I6 so that the innermost endY 34 of the spring 32 is biased inwardly against the inner wall of the groove 36.
The outer Vend 35 of the spring 32 is bent in a diameter greater than the diameter of the groove 3l so that this end of the spring is biased outwardly in the plate 21. The groove 36 is of sufficient depth to completely enclose the spring 32 when-thespring is compressed, so that the spring `may be placed in the groove 36 and'held there while the plate-211s pressed into place.
' When the plate 21 is moved so that the groove 3I comes' into registry with the grow/e36, the end 350i the spring 32 is pressed outwardly into the groove 3I, and theplate 21 is rotatably secured to the cover I6. ,Y The plate 21 is formed with a segmental Vopening 36 through the top wall 28, the sizeof the opening 36 being substantially the same as'the segments 25 and 26 described above. The segments 25 and 26 are separated a distance greater than each of the segments so that when the plate 21 is positioned, as shown in Figure 1, with the opening 36 between the segments 25 and 26, all of the perforations or openings through the cap are closed. rIfhe plate 21 may then be rotated in either direction for selectively opening or uncovering the perforations 24 or 22. The relative rotation of the plate 21 to the cover I6 is limited by a pin or lug 31 xed to or formed on anrannular rib 38 at the lower end of the ange i8. The flange 29 of the plate 21 is formed with an outwardly extending annular recess 39 in which the lug 31 slidably engages. Upon rotation of the plate 21 the lug 31 will engage with the ends of the slot 39 for limiting the rotation of the plate 21. In this manner the opening 36 will be disposed eitherrin registry with the segments 25 or 26, or between themV and will be held against further rotation.
I do not mean to conne myself to the exact details of construction herein disclosed, but claim all variations falling within the purview of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A condiment shaker comprising a cylindrical body, a wall in said body forming a pair of chambers therein, a cover for said body, said cover formed with openings communicating with said chambers, an annular flange on said cover engaging about the upper open end of said body, said ange formed with inclined slots, pins on said body engaging in said slots for securing said cover 'on said body, a selector plate rotatably carried by said cover, a ange on said plate engaging about the flange on said cover, said flanges formed with confronting annular grooves, a spiral resilient split ring engaging in said grooves for rotatably securing said plate on said cover, one end of said ring being biased into engagement with said cover and the other end of said ring biased into engagement with said plate, said plate formed with an opening for selectively registering with the openings in said cover, and correlated means carried by said cover and said plate for limiting the rotation of said plate with respect to said cover. said cover formed with openings communicating with said chambers, a selector plate rotatably carried by saidr cover, a depending flange on the periphery of said plate engaging about said cover, confronting annular grooves formed in said depending flange and in said cover, a spiral resilient split ring engaging in said grooves for rotatably securing said plate on" saidcover, Vone end of said ring being biased into engagement with said cover and the other end of said ring biased into engagement with said plate, said plate being formed with an opening for selectively registering with the openings in said cover, and correlated means carried by said cover and said plate for limiting the rotation of said plate with respect to said cover.
