Description
H. B. WYLIE CUFF BUTTON May 20, 1952 Filed July 14, 1950 INVENTOR. ZM yZie ATTORNEYS.
Patented May 20, 1952 ED SATEIS- This intention rel-ates to a cuff button-of the separabletype which there is a stud and socket separable connection between the two units formmg the cuff button.
In the type of cuff button herein referred to,
each of metwo units which compose the button have two heads. one to engage the outer surface of the cult, and the other to engage the inner surface of the-cuff so that each unit may be maintained in one part of the cuff when the cuff is separated, such for instance as when the sleeves are rolled up or the Shirt is removed. In this type of cuff button the two heads are usuany rigid, one with reference to the other, and it has been found that the user cannot secure the two units together unless such rigidity is provided.
One of the objects of this invention is to pro vide a cuff link of the separable unit type: in which the outer heads of either one or both of th units may rock with reference to the inner head so as to adjust itself along the surface of the cuff and conform to the angle of the cuff.
Another object of the invention is to provide for a rockable outer head for each of the units of the separable cuff button or link and yet provide for rigidity of these outer heads with reference to the inner head of each unit when the units are manipulated for attachment.
Another object of the invention is to provide a telescoping connection along two shanks, one attached to the outer head and one attached to the inner head of each of the units which may slide, one upon the other with means to permit rocking when in expanded position or rigidity when in collapsed position.
Another object of the invention is to provide a universal connection .between the inner and outer heads when the heads are separated so that the outer head may rock in any one of several different directions.
With these and other objects in View, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in th appended claims.
Figure 1 is a sectional view showing the units of the cuff button attached and the head collapsed for securing rigidity during such attachment.
Figure 2 is a sectional view showing both of the heads in outer position where relativ rocking is permitted.
In proceeding with this invention, I provide a pair of units, one of which is provided with a stud and the other with a socket, the socket rot 2 to yieldingly grip the stud These units are secured together by axialpressure upon their ends to force stud intothe socket and may be pulled. apart by pulling axially of the stud to having resilient means and hold iti'n attached position.
separate the units. The stud and socket are formed on the inner heads of the units while an outer headis provided'on each of the units, in order that this outer head may rock.
tubular-shank extends outwardly from the inner head of each of the unit and is provided with an inwardly extending fl-ange, while the outer head is provided'with a shank to extend into this tubular shank and has at its inner end an enlarged hemispherical portion which is of a size to-beengaged-bythe flange and limit outward movement while permitting rocking of the shank when at this outer location. From a point adiacent this hemispherical enlargement, the shank flares outwardly; in a frusto -conical position so that when the shank is slid inwardly at some point the frusto-conical surface will engage the edges of the inwardly extending flange and provide a second point of contact to prevent rocking of the outer head.
With reference to the. drawings, l0 designates one unit of the button and H the other unit of the button, which units are separately connected together. The unit H) has an inner head l2 from which a stud I3 with rounded end extends while a tubular shank [4 extends outwardly from this head, and is provided with a bore l5 and an inwardly extending flange Hi.
The unit H is provided with an inner head ll which is hollow and contains a W-shaped spring l8 which extends into a recess I9 which receives the stud l3, the spring gripping the undercut surface of the stud so as to hold the stud in the socket when the two are forced together.
The outer head 2| is provided with a shank 22 secured thereto in some rigid form and this shank is frusto-conical on its outer surface, as at 23, forming a narrow neck 24 from which it enlarges into a hemispherical portion 25, which is of a size substantially the size of the inner diameter or bore l5 of the shank I l.
The frusto-conical surface 23 is of a diameter so that when the head is forced inwardly to substantially the position shown in Figure 1, it will engage" the edges of the flange l6 while the end of the hemispherical portion 25 will engage the inner surface of the bore I5, thus forming two points of contact axially spaced so there will be no rocking of the outer head with reference to the inner head of the unit, thus the stud and socket may be forced together in a manner such as permitted by rigidly connecting inner and outer heads, but after the stud and socket connection is made, then the shanks may slide outwardly to permit rocking of the outer heads with reference to the inner heads for alignment with the outer surface of the cuff.
I claim:

A cuif button comprising two individual units having cooperating means for separable connections, each of said units having inner and outer heads for holding the unit in a cufl, shanks fixed to each head of one unit with said shanks slidably telescoping one within the other and the outer shank having inwardly extending flanges and said inner shank having an enlarged partially hemispherical portion to engage said flanges and limit axial movement thereof while permitting rocking movement about an axis.
2. A cuff button comprising two individual units having cooperating means for separable connections, each of said units having'inner and outer heads for holding the unit in a cuff, shanks fixed to each head of one unit with said shanks slidably telescoping one within the other and the outer shank having inwardly extending flanges and said inner shank having an enlarged end shaped to provide an arcuate generally spherical surface to engage said flanges and limit axial movement thereof while permitting rocking movement about an axis.
3. A cufi button comprising two individual units having cooperating means for separable connections, each of said units having inner and outer heads for holding the unit in a cuff, shanks fixed to each head of one unit with said shanks slidably telescoping one within the other and the outer shank having inwardly extending flanges and said inner shank having an enlarged head adjacent a narrower portion of the shank 4 with a flaring and frusto-conical shank portion to engage said flange when moved inwardly.
4. A cuff button comprising two individual units having cooperating means for separable connection, each of said units having inner and outer heads for holding the unit in a cuff, shanks fixed to each head of one unit with said shanks slidably telescoping one within the other and the outer shank having inwardly extending flanges and said inner shank having a narrower portion of the shank receiving said flanges with an enlarged shank extremity within the outer shank and having a diameter greater than the diameter across the inturned flanges.
5. A cuff button comprising two individual units having cooperating means for separable connection, each of said units having inner and outer heads for holding the unit in a cufi, shanks fixed to each head of one unit with said shanks slidably telescoping one within the other and the outer shank having inwardly extending flanges and said inner shank having a narrower portion of the shank receiving said flanges with an enlarged shank extremity Within the outer shank and having a diameter greater than the diameter across the inturned flanges and an enlarged shank base portion adjacent the outer head having a diameter substantially equal to the diameter across the inturned flanges.
