Description
Ap 3, 1951 w. B. SMITH 2,547,840
SECTIONAL MATTRESS Filed April 1, 1949 Inventor William B. Smith Patented Apr. 3, 1951 UNITED STATES 2,547,840 SECTIONAL MATTRESS William B. Smith, Memphisflllenn. Application April 1, 1949, Serial No. 84,996
1 Claim. 1
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in mattresses and more particularly to a sectional mattress composed of two or more duplicate parts together with means for detachably connecting the section in end to end relation with respect to each other to assemble the sections as a unitary structure.
An important object of the invention is to pro vide novel connecting means for the sections of the mattress to permit interchangeable use of the sections, or to change the position of one section with respect to another so as to distribute wear subjected to different portionsof the mattress.
A still further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is efficient and reliable in use, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, refer-' ence being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the sections of the mattress connected in assembled relation;
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary perspective View, with parts broken away and shown in section and showing one of the connectors or the mattress sections, and
. Figure 3 is a perspective view showing the sections of the mattress disconnected and stacked one upon the other for convenient storage or handling purposes.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates the mattress generally and which is composed of a plurality of sections, preferably including end sections 6 and l and an intermediate section 8. The sections of the mattress are constructed of uniform size and of duplicate construction whereby one section may be substituted for another, or the relative position of the sections changed as desired."
Each mattress section includes the usual spring units 9 and to which the ends of a substant ally V-shaped wire bail ID are suitably anchored to the upper and lower bars ii and I2 at the sides of the mattress section. The bail It] extends lon-' gitudinally in the mattress section toward an adjacent end thereof with the legs of the bail positioned one above the other as shown more clearly in Figure 2 of the drawings and an eye I3 is formed at the converging ends of the legs of the bail which projects outwardly at the sideof the mattress section through an eyelet l4 secured therein.
The sections of the mattress are placed in end to end assembled relation and the outwardly projecting eyes I 3 of the bails of adjacent sections are connected to each other by coil springs Hi. The springs are provided with hooks It at their ends for detachable engagement with the eyes [3 whereby the sections of the mattress may be easily and quickly connected together Or detached from each other.
Each section of the mattress is provided wih one of the bails Ill and outwardly projecting eyes [3 at each end thereof whereby any of the mattress sections may be connected at the center or end of the assembled mattress.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood,howeventhat even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A sectional mattress including at least a pair 7 of mattress sections, and means securing the sections to each other with ends confronting and comprising a V-shaped wire bail anchored at its ends internally of each section at the top and bottom of the section and at one side thereof WILLIAM B. SMITH.
