BED-SPRING.
Application filed April 29, 1915.
. T 0 all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, MARK ANTHONY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Streator, in the county of La Salle and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Bed-Spring, of which the following is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is a spring bed.
It is a matter of common knowledge that spring beds ordinarily become depressed along their longitudinal centers, and generally at their geometrical centers. As a consequence of the foregoing. a spring bed after a brief period of use becomes inoperative, or at least unsatisfactory in operation.
The present ini'ention contemplates the provision of a. spring bed embodying a plurality of sections of any desired number, the sections preferably being of rectangular outline, and so constructed that one set of corners after another of the respective sections of the bed may be placed together adjacent the geometrical center of the bed, thereby doing away successivelv with depressions at the center of the bed:
Another objectof the in vcntion is to provide novel means for uniting, the respective sections of the bed with each other.
With the above and other objects in iew which will appear as the description procecds. the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the de tails of construction hereinafter described and claimed. it being understood that changes in the precise emhodimentoi the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
in the accompanying drawing:*Figzure 1 shows the invention in top plan: Fig. 2 is a side elevation: Fig. 3 is a detailed perspective showing the means whereby the constituent sections of the bed are united.
Any of the well known forms of spring 5 bed sections may be employed in making up the'prcsent invention and the following' description. so far as it deals with details may be taken as typical merely.
In the present invention. and in order to so-present a concrete embodiment. four see ions are shown, the sections being: denoted respectively by the numerals 1, 2, 3 and 4, although more than four sections may be used if desired. A though the sections may" be variously constructed, each section is Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 30, 1916.
Serial No. 24,769.
shown as comprising an upper frame 5, a lower frame 6, cross members 7 connecting opposed portions of the lower frame 6, and cross members 8 connecting opposed portions of the upper frame 5, the cross members of the respective frames being rectangularly disposed as is common and well known' bed becomes depressed at its center, the sections 1, 2, 3 and 4- may be shifted with respect. to each other to bring other corners into close relation at the center of the bed. Th us, the corners 20, 26, 23 and 24 may constitute one group. the corners 18, 15, 16 and 17 may'- constitute another group, and the corners 25. 21 and 19 may constitute still another group. In this manner, the bed may be maintained in good condition adjaccnt its longitudinal center, much longer than would be the case with a common spring bed construction.
A ny suitable means may be provided for connecting the several sections. In the pres ent instance. the connecting means embodies a rod 27 provided at its ends with rectangularly disposed hooks 28. Intermediate its ends, the rod 27 is folded upon itself to form a. hook 29 extended in an opposite direction to the hooks 28. The hooks 28 are engaged around a. portion of the top frame 5 of one section, and the hook 29 is engaged around the corresponding part of the top frame of an adjoining section, as will be understood clearly from Fig. 1 of the drawings. Further, referring to Fig. 1, it is to be noted that the members 8 of the top frame 5 enthe hooks 28 on the ends of the rod 27 and hold the same in position against endwise movement.
Connecting means other than that shown in Fig. 3 may be resorted to, but the straw turc shown in Fig. Swill be found of peculiar utility.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed iS:--
1. The combination with a. pair of spring bed sections embodying frames, 0f a rod extended longitudinally of the frames, the rod being provided at its ends with transverse hooks and being provided with an intermediate hook, the intermediate and end hooks projecting in opposite directions and being engaged-3 respectively, with the frames.
2. The combination with a pair of spring bed sections, embodying frames, of a rod extended longitudinally of the frames, the rod being provided at its ends with trans verse hooks and being bent upon itself intermediate its ends to form a loop, the loop being fashioned into an intermediate hook, the intermediate and end hooks extending in opposite directions and being engaged, respectively, with the frames.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
MARK ANTHONY.
