This invention relates to draught-excluding devices for doors, of the kind having a push rod actuated by the closing of the door to operate means for moving a draught-excluding member into the operative position.
The present invention comprises a draught excluder of this kind, in which the draught-excluding member is moved into position by the co-operation of cam surfaces on said push rod and correspondingly shaped cam surfaces on an associated part of the door and on said draughtexcluding member.
According to the preferred embodiment, the device consists of a fixed bar adapted to be secured to the door and a movable bar supported from said fixed bar by double cam members which are mounted on the push rod and engage correspondingly shaped recesses in the fixed and movable bars respectively.
The invention will now be described by Way of example with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings, in which:
Figure l is a side elevation of the device before the draught-excluding member has been moved into position,
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the device after the draught-excluding member has been moved into position,
Figure 3 is an enlarged section on the line 3-3 of Figure 2, showing the device mounted on the door, and
Figure 4 shows the arrangement by which the device is actuated.
As illustrated, the device consists of a fixed bar H and a movable bar l2, the fixed bar H being fixedly mounted within a casing l3 which is secured to the door by means of lugs l4 and is open on the side facing the door and on the edge facing the surface beneath the door to allow face movement of the movable bar H2. The movable bar i2 is supported from the fixed bar II by means of two double cam members l5 which are connected together by means of a rod It. A push rod i1 is pivotally secured to the front cam and passes through a vertical slot [8 in a bracket [9 which is secured in a recess in the fixed bar I I, and terminates in an actuating knob 29. Said knob, when the door is open, extends through an opening in the end of the casing l3. A coil sprin 2| surrounds the push rod H and bears between the knob 2!! and the bracket Hi. The movable bar 52 is also recessed at one end to accommodate the actuating knob 29 and spring 2| when the door is open (Figure 1). Both the fixed and movable bars are formed with semi- 944, Serial No. 516,825
circular grooves 22 in their adjacent edges to accommodate the connecting rod 16 and the push rod 11 when the door is open and the device inoperative.
The arms of the cams l5 engage correspondingly shaped recesses 23 in the fixed and movable bars, the recesses 23 being provided with metal linings 26 to form bearing surfaces for the cams iii. A flexible tubular member 24 of rubber or other suitable material is secured in a groove in the bottom edge of the movable bar [2 to ensure proper contact being made with the surface beneath the door.
It will be understood that the device is secured to the door in a position depending upon the clearance between the door and the adjacent surface.
As shown in Figure 4, on closing the door by the knob 28 striking a plate 25 on the frame of the door. The push rod ll then forces said cams l5 out of the recesses 23, the pivotal connection between the rod 11 and the cams allowing the cams to move downwardly and out of said recesses whereby the movable bar I2 is forced downwardly into a draught-excluding position. It will be noted that both arms of the cams l5 contribute to this movement whereby the extent of the downward movement of the movable bar I2 is increased. The vertical slot in the bracket I9 permits of the necessary vertical displacement of the push rod ll due to the movement of the cams l5 out of recesses 23.
The device, consisting of the fixed and movable bars, cams and cam-actuating means, need not be mounted within a casin Thus, the fixed the device is actuated bar H may be secured within a recess formed in the appropriate edge of the door.
I claim:
1. A draught-excluder for a door, comprising a fixed bar adapted to be mounted on the door, a movable bar, a plurality of chevron-shaped cam members supporting said movable bar from said fixed bar by engagement with correspondingly chevron-shaped recesses in the fixed and movable bars respectively, a rod of rigid material connecting said cam members to provide joint simultaneous action thereof, and a push rod pivotally connected to one of said cam members and actuated by the closing of the door to impart movement to said cam members, whereby the cams partially recede from the said recesses in the fixed and movable bars thus moving the movable bar downwardly into a draught-excluding positj-QIL 5 2. A draught-excluder according to claim 12, in which the movable bar is returned into the inoperative position when the door is opened by means of a spring which bears between an actuating knob on said push rod and a bracket member housed within recesses in said fixed and movable bars, said bracket member being slotted to allow the passage therethrough of the push rod and also to permit of the necessary vertical displacement of the push rod due to the said joint movement of said cam members out of said recesses. 1
3. A draught-excluder according to claim 1 in which complementary grooves 'are formed in the adjoining edges of saidfixed and movable 1 bars to accommodate said connecting .rod and said push rod in the inoperative position of the device.
