Description
June 17, 1930. s BQNNER wINnow sAsH FASTENER Filed Aug. 28, 1928 Patented June 17, 1930 SIBLEY BONNER, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN" y WINDOW-seen FASTENER Application led August 28, 1928. Serial No. 302,600.
The present invention relates to the class of closure fasteners and pertains more particu-V larly to a fastener for sliding closures of the nature of a window sash. The primary object of this invention, is to provide a sash" fastener which will operate automatically when a pair ofv sashes with which it is associated are moved to closed position to lock them against opening movement from the outside.
Another object of the invention is to provide a fastener for a window sash which can be manipulated easily for quick release of the sash to permit the same to be moved to open position.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent as the descriptionl of the same proceeds and the invention will be best understood from a consideration ofthe following detailed description takeny inv connection with the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, with the understanding, however, that the invention 1s not confined to any strict conformity with' the showing of the drawing but may be changed or modified so long as such changes or modications mark no material departure from the salient features of the invention as expressed in the appended claims.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a portion of a window showing the sash latch embodying the present invention in position thereon;
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken upon the 5 line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing in detail, theV numerals 1 and 2 indicate the upper and lower sash frames respectively of a window structure, in association with which the present latch mechanism is shown.
-The latch structure comprises an arm member 3 which is pivotally mounted at one end as upon the pivot 4, within a recess 5 formedv in the inner face of one of the sash frames,
preferably the upper frame. VThe lower end cated by the numeral 8.
Positioned within the recess 5 behind the arm 3 is a resilient member 9 preferably a spring made up of a pair of arms connected by the resilient convolutions. 10, one of the arms being secured by the screw 11 to the inner wall of the recess while the other arm presses outwardly against thel roller supporting arm 3, thus normally projecting the roller from the recess'.
The major portion of the recess 5 is closed by the plate 12, the lower portion of this plate being provided with an opening 13 through which the roller 8 may extend.
Associated with the structure just de-V scribed is a cylinder 14, oneV end of which is open asshown. This cylinder carries at its closed end the laterally projecting bracket l5 which is designed to be secured against the inner face of the otheror lower sash frame positioning the cylinder horizontally across the top thereof withthe open end arranged, when the sashes are in'their normally closed positions so that theV normally outwardly projected roller -8 will extend thereinto. Y
Within the cylinder 14 is located a plunger 16 which carries asteni 17 f extending through a central aperture 18 formed in the closed end of the cylinder a substantial Ydistance outwardly ofthe closed end. This stem 17` carries upon itsouter end a head 19 and has surrounding it between the head and the adjacent end of the cylinder 14:, the coil spring 2() which, as will be readily understood, norj mally acts to draw the stem outwardly, thus moving the plunger 16' toV permit the roller 8 to enter the open end of the cylinder.
From the foregoing description, it will be Vreadily understood that as long as the roller is projected into the cylinder 14, itwill be impossible to move either of the sashes as the edge of the cylinder will be forced against the periphery of the roller in alinement with the pivot point thereof and thus locate the same in the cylinder. Release of the roller is effected by pressing the button 19 to force the stem and plunger 16 inwardly, thus causing the roller arm and roller to swing back into the recess 5 against the tension of the spring 9.
In order to prevent the roller 8 from marring\the outer face of the frame, a metallic Wear strip or the like may be secured longitudinally of the frame for the roller to bear against in its movement thereover.
5 Having thus described my invention what I claim is 1. A window sash fastener of the character described, comprising an elongated roller carrying member designed to be swingingly l0 supported at one end within a recess of a window sash frame, a plate covering the major portion of said recess, means within the recess for normally forcing the member and roller outwardly for the project-ion of the roller from the lower part of said recess beneath said plate, a cylindrical keeper member having one end open and adapted to be mounted Y upon an adjacent sash with the open end opposing the first mentioned sash to receive said roller therein, and a plunger member reciprocably mounted in the cylinder designed when actuated in one direction to eject the roller from the open end of the cylinder to permit movement of the sashes.
2. A window sash fastener of the character described, comprising an elongated arm designed to be pivotally mounted at one end within a recess of a sash frame, said arm having its other end obliquely angled and formed to provide a pair of supporting members, a
roller pivotally mounted between said members, a spring element within the recess normally acting to swing the roller carrying end of said arm outwardly, a cylinder open at one end, means for mounting said cylinder transversely of the top of an adjacent sash frame with the open end positioned to receive said roller when the sashes are in closed position, a plunger within said cylinder, a stem 4g carried by the plunger and extending through the closed end thereof, and spring means surrounding the outer end of said stem and normally acting to retract the plunger into the cylinder, said plunger acting when forced toward the open end of the cylinder to eject said roller therefrom.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
SIBLEY BONNER.
