COVER FOR HANDBAGS Filed June 5, 1947 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 wease Jteven 175/0626.
Patented Aug. 16, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE COVER FOR HANDBAGS Mamie E. Bohr and Jesse Steven Thornhill, Lynchburg, Va.
Application June 5, 1947, Serial No. 752,748 2 Claims. 150-28) foundation bag. Another object resides in the pocket structure of the cover in which the upper edge of the gusset meets the bottom edge of the pocket spaced some distance from the side end of the cover.
It is thus an object of the invention to provide a cover having a pair of upper pockets each' adapted to receive an extended side strip of the foundation ba and which is of shallow depth. Furthermore, the cover is provided with a gusset at each end to fit closely against a similar gusset in the ends of the foundation bag.
A still further object of the invention resides in a cover made in any variety of colors'which may be interchangeably slipped onto and over a foundation bag.
Further objects will be apparent from the foledges 2! and 22 and also along l8 extending into the gusset sections l4 and I5 and 23, thereby forming the closed end sections l9. Fig. 3 also shows the line of stitching 2|.
The foundation bag may of course comprise any shape desired, it only being necessary that it shall have the extending flaps or strips l0 which project into the pockets l2 and I3 and into the closed extended pockets H). In other words, the cover I l fits snugly over the foundation bag and follows the parts of the foundation such as the gussets' V as shown in Fig. 1.
lowing description when considered in connection with the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the cover and foundation bag with certain parts in section,
Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the cover and foundation bag with certain parts in section,
Fig. 3 is a sectional view of a detail,
Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the cover and modified foundation bag, and V Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the cover.
The foundation bag of Figs. 1 to 3 is of the'type in which the frame has two horizontal side bars 6 with a pair of lever bars 1 interconnected at a hinge 8. The ba portion 9 terminates at each top side part with a flap section I0. The actual cover I I is provided with a U-shaped body portion terminating in two upper pockets I 2 and I3 interconnected by a side gusset l4 and IS. The upper edge N5 of each gusset terminates at l1 to and at the lower edge I8 of each pocket l2 and I3 to form thereby a closed end section l9.
Fig. 4 illustrates a foundation bag having a zipper closure 20 instead of the closure shown in I to 3'. For a foundation bag having a zipper closure the structure of the cover II is exactly the same as disclosed in Fig. 5, that is, the cover is provided with pockets I2 and I3 and closed end sections l9.
The cover as shown in Fig. 5 may be cut out and stitched together in any suitablemanner, but one suitable method is to stitch along the We claim as our invention:
1. A removable cover for a handbag of the type to be placed ona foundation bag provided with projecting side strips comprising a U-shaped body portion terminating at each upper end in a pocket, and a gusset at each end of the body portion extending'up to the lower open edge of the pockets at a distance spaced from the end of the pocket, each pocket receiving a side strip of the foundation bag, and having closed sections at each end hereof, the top edge of the gusset merging into the open edge of the pocket at the point where the closed section begins.
2. A handbag comprising a foundation bag provided with projecting side strips, a removable cover including a U-shaped body portion terminating at each upper end in a pocket, a gusset for the cover at each end of the body portion extending up to the lower end of the pockets, each pocket receiving a side strip of the foundation bag and each pocket having a closed end section at each end thereof into which the ends of the side strips extend and into which the upper edge of the gusset merges into the lower end of the pocket, and a frame for the foundation bag including a pair of lever bars hinged to each other on each end of the handbag and extendin into the outside space formed by the gusset.
